Customer Reviews:
Fine Compilation of Their First Two Albums!.......2005-03-06
This is a fine compilation of Heron's first two albums from 1970 and 1971. Their music is mostly acoustic folk written by their two great song-writers Gerald T. Moore and Roy Apps.
A big shame that so few people know their music, because it's really great.
They have all the important ingredients; great songs, inventive arrangements, skilled musicians and fine vocals.
This CD could be a good place to start with Heron's music; personally I would have chosen a few more songs from their great second album "Half the Price, Twice As Nice".
Songs like "The Devil", "My Turn to Cry" and "Big A" ought to have been included too - in fact some of them may have been on the CD version, which I have not yet seen.
Anyway, the album is highly recommendable!
Heron - Britains best kept secret.......2001-06-14
This is a CD full of haunting melodies. This was mostly recorded outside, at a farm in Black Dog (a little village in Devon, England)in the early seventies. You can hear birds singing and the wind through the trees between many of the tracks. "Yellow Roses" is one of my favourite tracks - though the complete album is so relaxing that it is perhaps unfair to pick out individual tracks. Heron have returned to Black Dog recently, and recorded again! ....
One of the best CD releases of all time........1999-11-05
Heron ( not to be confused with Mike Heron's band of the mid 70's ) must be one of the most overlooked bands in history. If you're a British folk rock fan of the late 60's and early 70's, like myself, then this CD should be an indispensable part of your collection. It is filled with breathtakingly beautiful, alternate-tuned fingerstyle acoustic guitar playing, combined with rich, yet delicately soothing, solo and harmony vocals; folk rock heaven. Their harmonies can also be heard on Mike Cooper's 1970 release "Trout Steel". This best of collection is, indeed, just the tip of the iceberg. I purchased their two albums "Heron" and "Twice as Nice..." at a used record store years ago and they've been favorites of mine ever since. As a matter of fact, I own over a thousand varied musical recordings and those Heron albums ( 19 songs of which are included on the "Best of" CD ) would definitely be included in my top ten list, alongside John Martyn's "Bless the Weather", Nick Drake's boxed set, and the Incredible String Band's "Wee Tam and the Big Huge". For years I've been trying to find other recordings which feature Heron's Roy Apps and Gerald Moore, but my search has proved unsuccessful. Come on guys, get back together and record something. You were one of the best bands of all time.
