Legendary sideman takes spotlight..........2000-07-07
Gower's first solo effort was a great slice of British power pop. Since that time, he has seasoned well in the NYC area, and now served by some able sidemen of his own, Gower's album combines the influences of pop with a a soulful jazzy folk element. Some artists occasionally sink themselves with trying to be too eclectic, but Gower mixes it together like a tasty margarita. It's smooth going down, but has some kick. Another artist besides Richard Thompson or Donovan to compare him to might be Elvis Costello, who's recent outings in the past decade have seen him explore similar territory. As a guitarist, Gower's subtle textures also bring to mind the work of Mark Knopfler or even original Mayall/Fleetwood Mac guitarist, Peter Green. Perhaps if Nick Drake had stayed with us long enough to be influenced by Marvin Gaye & Jimi Hendrix, it might have been come out something like this.
Co-production by Rooks mastermind Mike Mazzarella makes sure the album retains a pop edge to the whole proceedings. Buy this now!
