Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Interesting rarity-- some lovely listening.......2003-04-07

A very interesting CD collection/juxtaposition of groups and song selections.

The Kingston Trio half is pretty much a "greatest hits" collection, all fun to listen to. The Highwaymen half is equally as enjoyable, but with some rarer cuts along with their two big hits "Michael" and "Cotton Fields". Especially the rare "Bird Man" single, done in conjunction with the classic Burt Lancaster film "Birdman of Alcatraz". Great harmonies!

I do wish that there had been decent liner notes, though.

5 out of 5 stars IF YOU LIKE THEM YOU WILL LOVE IT!!!!.......1999-04-07

Finaly my father who is 63 and I can listen to the same music and LOVE IT.!!!!!!

5 out of 5 stars It's an outstanding reprise of the folk music movement.......1998-11-26

This album sweetly brings you back to the late 50's which saw folk music become the most popular American music form.

1. Tom Dooley

This is the song that started it all and brought fame to the Kingston Trio. It sadly describes the eternal triangle.

2. Reverend Mr. Black

A song about a courageous man who set the example to his son. This song was released after the Kingston Trio had been popular for several years.

3. Where Have All The Flowers Gone

A sad rendition of a song which became an anti-war standard.

4. M.T.A.

Written as a campaign song for a Boston politician, this song is sung with vigor and spirit. Fine banjo picking too.

5. Worried Man, A

A semi-humorous and rousingly sung rendition. It's delightfully Kingston Trio.

6. Michael (Row The Boat Ashore)

This hauntingly beautiful ballad put The Highwaymen on the charts as their first hit. They were still Seniors at Wesleyan College when this record made the charts. It's recognized around the world as a lasting folks song standard.

7. Gypsy Rover, The

Also recorded by Tommy Makem and the Clancy Brothers, the Highwaymen do this song with lilting elegant harmonies.

8. Cotton Fields

Many artists have recorded this Huddie Ledbetter (Leadbelly) favorite but no one has ever equalled the Highwaymen hit which followed Michael. You can clearly hear lead singer Dave Fisher's piercing tenor as he belts out this song with Chan Daniels. Impossible not to sing along and it's become this writer's personal favorite.

9. I'm On My Way

This rendidtion is about the Underground Railway and was a hit single which followed Cottonfields. Sung with much spirit.

10. Bird Man, The

This recording also has narrative by Burt Lancaster who starred in the film, Bird Man of Alcatraz. It tells the tale of Robert Stroud.
