Customer Reviews:
Teenage Influences.......2002-05-27
I first heard John Renbourn via a friend who was to become my guitar teacher. At the time I was 16, Bob Dylan etc., was all the rage and the 60's were swinging. I had just discovered sex but was so wrapped up in guitar playing that I divided my time between the two activities!! Renbourn made the most amazing sounds I had ever heard a guitar produce and it wasn't until February of 2002 that I actually got to see the man in concert at the Trades Club in Hebden Bridge. I have loved his music for over 35 years and would recommend that every affectionado of the guitar make at least one pilgrimage to his altar. You won't be disappointed.
Renbourn's first two albums on one cd.......2000-12-03
John Renbourn's first two albums came out in late 1965 or 1966 on the famous guitarists' label Transatlantic Records. Shortly thereafter he and Bert Jansch would form Pentangle; this twofer reminds us of his blues and folk roots and the kind of material he was playing in the clubs at the time as a highly successful solo act. The fare consists mainly of solo instrumentals, but he sings on quite a few and is accompanied on some by an additional singer or instrumentalist. For those who might be wondering, even at this early date there is plenty of virtuosity evident--though to my mind the effect is just a bit too raw: I personally like his subsequent material better. Still, this is it: the first recordings by one of the major acoustic guitar talents of the last two generations.
