5 out of 5 stars GrownUpMusic.com recommended!.......2004-12-09

Sally Fingerett is an amazing guitar player, pianist and mom who writes songs about things that matter. Her latest, "A Woman's Gotta Do Her Thing" is a career retrospective worth owning. While her signature "Home Is Where the Heart Is" continues to be her calling card, this CD will inform fans that Sally as just as funny as she is poignant. Sally is a founding member of The Four Bitchin' Babes, 4 moms with guitars and a wicked collective sense of humor.

4 out of 5 stars Inside Your Heart.......2004-05-05

Sally Fingerett is one of my favorite singer/songwriters. Her songs are graced with humor, grounded in humility, and boast memorable melodies and superb musicianship. This collection of songs covering her solo career as well as her time with the 4 Bitchin' Babes' work is a joyful journey. Her most memorable song is probably "Home Is Where the Heart Is" about a mother explaining to her daughter about gay people and touching on the tragedy of AIDS, "Home is where the heart is, no matter how the heart lives, inside your heart where love is, that's where you have to make yourself at home." Peter, Paul & Mary have covered the tune. This version was recorded live in Columbus, Ohio. It's a breathtaking song that extols tolerance and respect, the kind that makes a career.

The title track is apparently dedicated to her mother, "When I find myself in a bad bad mood, I'm puffy, I'm pissy ... If you're like me, go on a shopping spree!" Sally's sense of humor comes through on the great chatty live intro to "It's Been Said" where she tells about slaving over spaghetti sauce only to have her husband improve it by adding hot dogs. When she tells it, it's hilarious.

Janis Ian joins Sally for a duet on sentimental acoustic "Little Girl Please Wait." One of my favorites is "When I Wake Up from this Night" with its bouncy beat and great percussion that sounds like whip snaps and boxes popping. "Wild Berries" is one of Sally's oldest songs, written 22 years ago. Its gorgeous stately melody graces a lyric about picking up a hitchhiker & stands the test of time. "Whatever We Did" with Tom Martin on flutes is another addictive melody with a bouncy beat that remembers life on Chicago's south side. "The Return" has Sally's lovely piano front & center with another classic melody. The set concludes with Sally's previously unreleased version of Peggy Seeger's great feminist anthem about gender discrimination, "I Wanna Be An Engineer."

This collection covers the many different moods of Sally Fingerett, from the melodic acoustic gorgeous melodies to stunning toe tappers to joyful humor. This is an excellent set by one of my favorite artists. Enjoy!
