4 out of 5 stars A national treasure.......2000-12-18

Gregg Miner is a national treasure. Most people don't even know what a ukelin is. Those of us in the know usually consider the ukelin and its ilk of American pseudo-zithers as unplayable scams devised to deprive some folk of a meal or two while providing those same meals to unscrupulous salesman. In any event, the world at large would consider such things little more than musician-only-appreciated dýcor for the den and even aficionados think of them as interesting bits of history to be preserved lest we repeat. Mr. Miner rescues these and ca. 100 other interesting or just plain freakish instruments from obscurity. He is not satisfied with the collection, restoration, and preservation of such things, but feels obliged to learn to play them and reintroduce us to their interesting, long-forgotten, long-silent tones! His arrangements of classic carols are professionally executed and flirt with ingenious wit. They are diverse, eclectic, and eccentric enough to never approach stuffy scholarship but are vital, breathing things. His accompanying texts with wonderful photos serve as an informative, amusing reference and are crafted with similar wit. My one complaint is that both recordings in the series are too short. But cut the guy some slack; it can't come quickly to acquire any degree of proficiency for so many musical tools. He couldn't have had much more time after this monumental achievement.

5 out of 5 stars Lovely and educational.......2000-01-10

I was given this CD as a christmas present and it has quickly become my favorite. Any string-instrument musician in particular will enjoy the music, and even more the discussion of the instruments. Mr. Miner plays each instrument only once, and in the context for which it was originally designed. This is still an obscure CD that, should the general public become more aware of it, has potential to be a huge seller. Can't recommend it enough!

5 out of 5 stars The Best Acoustic Christmas Music Collection.......1999-12-18

This album has become one of my holiday favorites. The witty and charming arrangements are all the more enjoyable because of the wide range of sounds Gregg Miner makes with all his instruments. It is remarkable that he has collected so many strange and wonderful instruments, and even better that he play them all! I love this record, and its'companion Volume 2!

5 out of 5 stars The best instrumental music I have ever heard!.......1999-11-20

The two-volume collection of "A Christmas Collection" is by far the best example of what one man with a passion for music and vintage instruments can do. If you enjoy Christmas favorites from your childhood you will thoroughly enjoy this set of music. Mr. Miner has put together a great collection of holiday favorites and played them all on vintage and classical instruments. This is not a homogeneous collection either. Each of the pieces are unique and played with the spirit of the season. My personal favorites are the 'international collection' in which each of the songs is played with a group of instruments from a different part of the world. My hat is off to you Mr. Miner and your excellent collection and tremendous musical achievement.
