Quiet loveliness.......2001-01-09

This is a lovely collection of songs--beautifully selected, arranged and performed, especially by the oboe solist, Stella Dickinson. I love this sort of music--English folksongs in the style of Vaughn Williams and Delius--and this is one of the most consistently beautiful collections I have heard. It is perfect music for reading, but you will find yourself drwan away from your book to listen to the pure, plaintive melodies. I would hope they might do a second volume--but if so, I hope Dickinson and the arranger avoid the sophomore mistake of adding jarring songs that don't fit in order to "vary the formula." They have given us a gem here.
