Customer Reviews:
Music of the ages.......2003-04-10
I came to this CD from fiddler friends already familiar with Scandi folk music. The tunes are halfway between classical and folk, often with A and B parts like common fiddle tunes. You could say it is chamber folk music. OK, the overall mood of the CD is dark and very evocative, ideal music for turning your imagination loose. There are moments where the ensemble playing is so "tight" that you can't pick out one instrument. The sound of the nyckelharpa always out front, alternately beautiful (like an oboe) or brash and farty sounding. The waltzes are stunning. The guitar accompaniment is brilliant, always moving, always harmonizing. The viola is always supporting. The music has lots of ornaments and twists. If you want to take a trip, but not leave the house, I recommend this CD.
Yawn, Boring.......2003-04-05
(Yawn yawn yawn) This CD was so boring I had to break up the first listening into two parts. Technically excellent, and perfect of pitch, every one of these performances lack the name of the group and the album - Výsen (SPIRIT). Instead, it can be called Pedantic.
It reminds me of a conservatory of music on-stage performance, stuffy audience and performers dressed in black. In the quest for perfection, they are reserved and lifeless. Very similar to a boring performance of Mozart by students trying oh-so-hard not to make a mistake, or to be out of tune.
In contrast, I happened to recently listen to a Chieftains performance. A bit rough around some edges, out of unison, pitch (only occasionally) but the message behind the spirited music came loud and clear, and my toes were tapping.
The music needs a little FLAIR. Draw the bow a little harder, bounce it a little higher, strengthen those fortes, lighten up on those pianissimos, and above all, spend some time with your local "ethnic" musicians, and find the life behind the music.
Compilation CD, with 5 new cuts.......2000-02-02
Výsen is from Sweden, and features the traditional Swedish folk instrument Nyckelharpa. They play largely traditional music, but with a modern flair all their own.
This is the first US release of any Výsen material. It covers the first 3 CDs (2 on Drone and 1 on Auvidis) plus some previously unreleased cuts. It has a few cuts that feature percussionist Andrý Ferrari, but he plays trap set here rather than the small percussion he plays on later CDs. An early experiment with louder electrified versions of Výsen? I'm glad they chose not to pursue that vein much further.
Výsen is a great band and if you're interested in hearing them, you could buy this CD and get a feel for their early work. Then go buy their first 3 CDs, "Výsen", "Vilda Výsen" and "Essence".
