Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Wow! Percussive Voices is MUST HAVE CD!.......2001-06-01

Percussive Voices is an exploration of sound and texture that is ancient and primal. This is World music at its best, but also a lesson in the art of percussion.

Brian Melick is an inventive musician who seems truly inspired by his art. The CD provides generous liner notes that help you understand how each piece was created by introducing the instruments behind the music. It also serves to display his passion for the Udu drum and percussion in general. But the beauty of CD jacket is only the beginning...

Pulp Fiber begins the journey with an evocative beat begging physical movement akin to tribal dancing. The repetitive rhythms continue through the next two tracks and peak with Color of Perpetual Motion, lulling listeners into trance-like meditation. As you become one with the music, it's hard to resist toe-tapping, head-bobbing, swaying and bouncing.

The mood changes with the fourth track, Transformation, which meanders through a landscape of colorful and tranquil tones. Next, we dive into a raw latin rhythm with Skin on Skin. The excitement is fresh and inspiring.

The next track, Earthen' Groove, beautifully marries the East and West with the sound of tibetan cymbals and latin conga. Though there are a number of contenders, this has to be my favorite. Culminating in the title track, it's clear Melick is having fun with an intriguing variety of instruments. The fact is he's used everyday objects to create his instruments. Remember Stomp, anyone?

True to its title, Percussive Voices introduces the diversity of percussion while treating the listener to a rich tonal experience. It's no wonder it debuted at #23 on the New Age Voice Top 100 New Age Radio Airplay Chart. All in all, Percussive Voices is an uplifting musical adventure.

Percussive Voices is must-have CD for those who love percussion or World music, as well as anyone who wants to explore trance meditation with the aid of percussive instruments.

I can't wait for his next release!
