Penelope Houston.......how start to describe her? from a wild punk youth with "the avengers" to an interesting maturity as much in the artistic field as in the personal field (she became a gorgeous woman also) she left behind her past, quit her punk bandmates and started a career into folk and pop and some reminisences of her past (punk) into some sort of folk-punk or punk-folk wathever, and she did it in a wonderfull way in her debut "the whole world" wich sounds like a mix of worldbeat rithms along with the styles i mentioned before, in a bohemian mood, this follow up "cut you" have a progression in jazzy rithms, flamenco and even hard rock, just chek the "remake" of "glad im a girl" , "sweetheart" is anoter of my faves Miss Houston can be sweet as much as she is intelligent, "the qualitys of mercy" sounds great and sweet too, "cut you" closes the album with good feminist sense of dark humor.

An album I keep comming back to........1999-01-22

I can't say I ever heard much of Penelope Houston's band The Avengers. Probably a good thing, because this album shares little with that seminal punk band. A certain amount of punk energy and attitude, combined with the catchy songwriting that has spurred a 20 year cult following of the Avengers raises separates "Cut You" from the albums of run of the mill female singer-song/writers with band who seem so prevalant today. Somehow, Houston can pull of lines like "If it's a man's world/ than I'm a girl" without them sounding cliched. The album isn't amazing, but it has some standout tracks such as "Qualities of Mercy" and "Sweetheart" that keep me reaching for the tape when I'm driving. Unfortunatly, the instrumentation and production don't seem to do Houston's songs justice. This album would be better if it was recorded with a rockin' band or an acoustic guitar in an empty room. Still, I can confidently recomend this album to anyone who isn't too hung up on '78 punk rock.
