Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars Pure Kottke........2005-09-13

Even if "Guitar Music" isn't Kottke's Opus one in ingenuity, he newer fails to leave one breathless with admiration.
Kottke is the masters mentor when it comes to playing the lute but I miss his raspy vocals.

4 out of 5 stars This is good stuff.......2005-05-30

I knew of Leo Kottke from my high school days back in the late 70s and early 80s when I was buying LPs on the Chrysalis label from artists like Blondie and UFO. The record sleeves always had pictures of other artists' releases and I remembered Kottke for his unusual name and because I wondered why anyone would want an album of guitar with no vocals or drums. Well, I'm older now, I've finally heard my first Kottke disc, and it's very easy to see how the man has built a 30+ year career on acoustic guitar music. The pieces on this album are beautifully played--clear and lovely with occasional touches of humor. Recommended.

4 out of 5 stars A Stunning Collection of Guitar Instrumentals.......2000-03-31

I have been a long-time fan of solo guitar music: John Fahey, Michael Hedges, Adrian Legg, Preston Reed, Robbie Basho, but Leo Kottke is my favorite. From 1969's "6- And 12-String Guitar" to 1999's "One Guitar, No Vocals," Kottke has released a series of stunning guitar albums. "Guitar Music" was his third all-instrumental outting. I first bought this on LP in 1981, and just now picked it up on CD for a low price from Amazon.com's Bargain Music Dept. Kottke's playing, as always, is spectacular. Whether it's his slide playing on "Part Two," the fingerpicking on the gorgeous "Side One Suite," or the haunting arrangement of "Sleep Walk," Kottke is a master guitar player. All of Kottke's albums are terrific and this is one of his best. RECOMMENDED

5 out of 5 stars Glorius Guitar Work.......2000-02-10

I first heard this CD in 1983. The music moved me deeply, and still does. These songs stay in my mind for hours after I've heard them. Leo has total control of his guitar, using dynamics and beautiful composition to the nth degree. A no-brainer; BUY IT!

5 out of 5 stars Do not hesitate to buy this CD........1999-09-10

I have to say that of the 15 or so Kottke recordings I have that I enjoy this one the most, and remains that way 19 years after I purchased it in 1980. For better or worse, there are no geese farts on this one. (Kottke once described his voice as "geese farts on a muggy day.") The original compositions are all exquisite, engaging, and often very deep and moving. The covers (tumbling tumbleweeds, sleepwalk, and all I have to do is dream) are made into originals, if I can put it that way. The playing is stellar--emotional, complicated, dense, and sentimental. The recording quality is very good. If you're new to Kottke, start here. If you've got other Kottke and want more, this has to be next on your list.
