Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars You have to buy this CD!.......2003-02-15

No words can describe the brilliance Fred displays on the CD - an absolute must for any lover of traditional Scottish and Celtic music! Don't even think about it, just do it!

5 out of 5 stars Great artistry from the world's top piper.......2001-04-16

Morrison is one of the world's best pipers and this album underlines this. The Sound of the Sun has immediately become one of the all-time piping classics.

Although Morrison is acknowledged as a supreme technician, winning many competitions, what stands out in this album is the sheer beauty of the music. "Drumbuie" is staggeringly beautiful - I keep it on repeat on my CD player and am in pain when I have to switch it off and do other things - and worth buying the CD for alone.

Morrison's playing of Alick C McGregor is the best I've ever heard. Virtuosity is of itself almost useless, but when combined with this degree of sensitivity the effect is extremely emotive. Each track is characterised by the twin thrusts of peerless technique and musicality. This is evident across the different instruments that Morrison plays. This is an album I will return to again and again.

(As an aside - John Dally's review is a bit ignorant. He uses inconsistent criteria - he doesn't like Morrison's innovations and yet criticizes his alleged "ersatz scholarship" and "overstated tradition-bearing". It seems to me Dally is one of the odd crowd of boring piping pedants that one occasionally comes across, people who put their own sterile criteria for "authenticity" above the music itself. Dally compares Morrison with Miles Davis; his review is amusingly reminiscent of early sceptical reviews of Miles - written by boring jazz pedants who didn't see the point and who were proved so wrong.)

5 out of 5 stars Inspiring playing.......2000-11-26

Fred excels in this recording. He plays the Border pipes, whistle and irish pipes. I think people will measure piping to the standard of this recording... I would recommend this CD strongly to anyone, piper or not.

5 out of 5 stars Appreciation.......2000-11-19

i have seen fred morrison perform live and appreciated with all others present that we were in the presence of a superb exponent-in terms of technical skill and feeling for the music-and this cd reflects the same sense of authenticity which he expresses whenever he plays. This is the genuine article-quite magnificent in its purity and capacity to connect. The amazing feature of this cd is that this same essence is present in all the tracks-and they therefore reflect the unity and wholeness of his musical expression.

5 out of 5 stars Great stuff.......2000-10-06

I wanted to share my opinion of The Sound of the Sun. I think it is brilliant - really energetic in parts, moving in others. I love the tune Alick MacGregor. It really got me going. I think the pipes sound beautiful on this album. He has got fingers like lightning on the faster ones! I would love to see this piper play live. Does anyone know if he tours?
