A lost classic!.......2005-06-19

This CD came out in 1993, but I was unemployed and too broke to buy it then. I finally got a copy a few years ago, and it was worth it. This was actually Sebastian's first studio album since "Welcome Back" in 1976, but he played a couple of these songs live when I saw him in 1990. The title song "Tar Beach" is classic pop/rock, and would've been a hit if he had released it back in the 70's. An artist like John Sebastian had no chance at pop success in the 90's, but these songs are just as good as his older stuff. There have been reports of damage to his voice in recent years, but I don't hear that on this CD. The music is his usual mixture of pop, rock, blues, country and folk. "Mornin' Blues" could almost be an old country blues tune; "Smokey Don't Go" is a tribute to Smokey Robinson and the Miracles; "Someone's Standin' in Your Door" features guest vocals by Levon Helm; "Bless "Em All" is a "message" song that seems even more relevant in this post-911 world. There's plenty of John's great harmonica playing throughout this album, and also his unique guitar style, sort of a combination of rhythm and lead.

Excellent music. Why this guy hasn't released more music over the years is beyond me. Sebastian basically retired from music after reaching number one with the song "Welcome Back" (a.k.a. the Welcome Back Kotter TV theme) which was featured on, in my opinion, one of his best solo LPs (and when will this be released on CD?). That was in 1975! I believe this 1992 effort is his first project since then, and features, as well, some of his best solo work. "Walking with Someone New" is one of his best love songs. "Tar Beach" is contagious, "Night Owl Blues" is an effective hats-off to his past, "Mornin' Blues" anticipates the J Band and recalls his Spoonful roots. My favorite though is "Freezin' from the Inside Out" which is downright gritty. Every song on this set is a winner, with no filler. Sebastian here once again lets loose the magic that causes people, as myself, to feel good. If you can find this CD anywhere, I suggest that you buy it and crank it a listen.
