3 out of 5 stars Cobbled Together as Best They Could.......2003-03-04

The big problem with Jim Croce compilations (all three of his studio LPs seem to be out of print) is he just didn't record all that much. How many times can you shuffle around the same songs and get listeners to buy a new version? Give credit for Terry Cashman and Tommy West (his original producers -- this set was originally released on LP in 1980) for trying. But trying to recreate the magic of a guy who was just starting to make himself a popular figure when he died is like trying to make a cake without flour and milk -- there just aren't enough ingredients to complete the job.

The album's premise is, to use kinder language, nonsense. "One of the allures of Jim Croce's music is the traveling minstrel aspect of his lyrics... 'Down the Highway' is a trip through Croce's mind and emotions.'" Yeah, but then why have they tacked on "I Got a Name," "Old Man River," and a medley of "Chain Gang," "He Don't Love You," and "Searchin'" -- none of which Croce wrote? If it's traveling songs, fine (although I'm not sure how much traveling was done on some of these songs -- it's more like where the stories took place), but don't try to tell me "Old Man River" (written by Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein before most of us were born -- perhaps even Jim as well) reflects Croce's "mind and emotions".

You're better off finding a better hits set.

4 out of 5 stars A Nicely Assembled Compilation.......2000-05-23

This is a good collection to get one started on Jim Croce's contributions to seventies music. The Smash Hits- Bad Bad Leroy Brown, You Don't Mess Around With Jim, and I Got A Name are all here. In addition some lesser known but just as catchy gems such as Speedball Tucker, Alabama Rain, and New York's Not My Home are here as well. The storeis behind all of Jim's songs are all an interesting listen. Time In A Bottle should have been included to make this recording a little more complete. However this recording does stir up a lot of emotions and is very worthwhile.

5 out of 5 stars The perfect album.......2000-05-11

This album is quite simply the best I own. It has Jim Croce's best songs in one collection. It has his "storytelling songs" (like Bad Bad Leroy Brown, Don't Mess with Jim, Speedball Trucker) as well as his soulful hits (I got a name, Box #10, etc.) and a interesting medley. A must have for any Croce fan.
