Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Uplifting Singer-Songwriter.......2005-07-19

Uplifting and thought-provoking lyrics with a voice to match. This is a lovely album.

5 out of 5 stars you need to own this.......2002-02-25

Pierce Pettis is one of the most under-rated singer-songwriters in the world today, period. This album soars with songs listeners can't help but connect with. "My Life of Crime" is a study in parallels... "Depending on Gravity" captures the state of blossoming love... "Granddaddy..." is an instrumental song that transports you back in time... "You Move Me" even got covered by Garth Brooks...

Seeing Pierce Pettis play live is an amazing experience. But since he doesn't play within driving distance every weekend, owning this and his other cds enriches my cd collection.

5 out of 5 stars Warmth, grace, and wit--beautifully rendered........2000-03-14

If the good news is an acid no vessel can hold finally, Pierce Pettis' songs bear it better than most anything I've heard in recent years. Phony religious piety is nowhere to be found here--the life of faith is a ragged business. Shame and sadness are the lot of us all. And yet, there is beauty and joy even in the struggle of contemporary life. Pettis' songs explore the full range of the emotions of faith and almost always with telling insight. The spirituality of this music is warm and inclusive. "Miriam" is beautiful homage to "one sure miracle, the faith of a little girl." "Absalom" is the haunting lamentation of a father who knows that he was the one who stole the innocence of his son. Mark Heard's "Satelite Sky," magnificently performed, sets a melancholy but hopeful tone that persists throughout the recording. All the songs on the disk are moving, warm, and beautiful.

5 out of 5 stars Heard it, bought it, liked it, loved it!.......2000-03-06

Like everyone else, I had to see Pierce Pettis live todiscover him. How is this man not being played on TV and Radio. He has a unique and memorable voice, and is a staggering guitar player. More importantly, he writes superb songs. Personal (Love's gonna Carry Me Home) eye opening (Absalom Absalom) humorous (Depending on Gravity) they are always moving and beautiful. Buy it now. 5 out of 5 stars Warm spirituality, fetching rhythms, melodies that linger.......2000-02-29

The spirituality of the Christian gospel is, finally, an acid that no vessel can hold. It burns away all that is superficial and self-serving even while it nourishes that part of us that depends on something beyond ourselves that is true, beautiful, and good. True Christian spirituality faces up to the tragedies of our everyday life and somehow manages to find beauty and comfort in the midst of the suffering. Pierce Pettis's songs on "Making Light of It" bear this gospel well. The pain is there and so is the beauty--not to mention some wry humor. For world-weary Christians who find heaps of banal theology and cheap gimmickery in Contemporary Christian Music, there is needed tonic here. All the songs are memorable--most highly recommended.
