Customer Reviews:
A Great Cheri Knight CD co-starring Eric Ambel.......2003-01-06
The other reviews of this CD do a good job of reviewing the songs, so I'll just mention a few things. Both of her CDs are great, but some of the best songs on The Knitter hit harder and louder than anything on The Northeast Kingdom. Much of that firepower is due to the guitar playing of Eric Ambel. I read a Steve Earle interview where he explained how he started working with Cheri Knight. One day while driving he stuck a compilation CD in his CD player and when he heard the Light In the Road song he just kept listening to it over and over again for the rest of the drive. He got The Knitter CD and loved it, and he wound up producing her second CD. He also added Eric Ambel to his own band. I'm hoping that Eric is continuing to write more songs for another CD release of his own. I'm also hoping that Cheri Knight is working on another CD. To sum up this review I'll just say that anytime you see either a Cheri Knight or Eric Ambel CD for sale you should buy it for yourself or to give it to someone else.
2 CDs in 1.......2002-07-25
The contrast of the first 4 tunes which rock flat out and the remaining tracks which are great folk rock is amazing; it's like having two different CDs in one, but both are great. The cover art of the CD with an award winning sheep is a little strange, but fits with the title track. Eric Ambel's electric guitar gives weight to "The Knitter," "I draw the loose ends down in my aching hands & start unwinding." The dense electric rock sound of "Megalith" continues, "Under the same sky they would be, in the rain & the sun." "Down By the Water" is a bit more upbeat than Neil Young's "Down By the River," but would be a good companion piece on this country-flavored toe tapper. The rock CD concludes with "Light in the Road," a churning electric rocker, a great track. With "Last Barn Dance" we begin CD2. It's a midtempo folk tune with pretty acoustic guitar, "Later on when the leaves are all scattered we will look at the world though older eyes; Here we are on a road bound to no one, you & I, you & I, you & I." "Wishing Well" is a haunting folk ballad, "She's standing in the garden with a white dress on; silver roses in her hand." "That I Might See" is another midtempo folk tune with a distinctive melody. Cheri hypnotically drones lyrics as much as sings them giving a feel of pain under pressure on "Waiting for Sara." "Spellbound" is a mysterious track, "She wakes, hears a voice two doors down...That was the last year she believed." Fiddle makes "Paper Wings" almost sound bluegrass. "Very Last Time" concludes the CD with stinging electric guitar on the slow tune, "It worries me, honey, I think my feelings were wrong." This CD is really great music, very different sounds, but all great. U snooze U lose!
Suprisingly good...Another great artist ignored.......1999-12-29
In the editorial review, it notes that this material was initially released in the UK. Frequently it seems, I turn to Europe to find out what's really going on in Americana/alt-country. Ironic... I purchased it this year due to word of mouth, four years after it's initial release. This is deserving of a much wider audience. Northeast Kingdom, the "newer" CD was released in 1998. It is also excellent and largely ignored.
The audio clips of The Knitter, although excellent, are not necessarily representative. The first four songs have much more electric guitar and rock sound than the remaining seven (which are more acoustic based). Enjoy and tell your friends what they're missing.
understated.......1999-01-14
Cheri Knight's "The Knitter" is one of those albums that really grows on you. Her subtle talents become more and more obvious after repeated listenings. She's got to be one of the best songwriters working today. Everything about this album is understated -- the writing, the singing, the playing -- but it all sinks in and works wonderfully as a whole. I've owned this album for over two years now, and it still sounds better every time I listen to it. Her newer album, "The Northeast Kingdom" is terrific, too, but I'd take this one if I had to choose.
