Customer Reviews:
Thoughtful lyrics, layered vocal, excellent fretwork, and a solid rhythm section.......2006-02-10
"Immigrant Sons" proves a worthy successor to The Farm Dogs debut "Last Stand in Open Country." It capitalizes on the same strengths as their first record: thoughtful lyrics, layered vocals, excellent fretwork, a solid rhythm section. Sometimes the arrangements are a bit too lush and paring down on the strings would not be a bad thing.
The songs often contain photographic amounts of detail, celebrating, contesting, and challenging life things such as confronting change, dealing with loss, growing old, bad relationships, self-doubt, good relationships, becoming unhinged, seeking revenge-things which could easily have been mishandled or trivialized by lesser bands.
The Farm Dogs but are also not really out of line with bands such as the Eagles, Poco, or Desert Rose Band-a slick sort of Americana-but at times also seem more akin to Al Stewart on tracks such as Foreign Windows. Here is yet another largely overlooked CD well worth a few listens.
If you are wondering, the Farm Dogs were (wish the verb were "are") a band that consisting of Bernie Taupin, Tony Brock, Jim Cregan, Robin Le Mesurier, and Tad Wadhams. Check out their past and current affiliations and you will find names such as Elton John (that Bernie Taupin), Family, Rod Steward, Sheryl Crow, and The Babys popping up.
The Farm Dogs are back with some new licks!.......1998-05-27
FARM DOGS is: Bernie Taupin, Tony Brock, Jim Cregan, Robin Le Mesurier, and Tad Wadhams.
Hot off the success of their groundbreaking debut album, Last Stand in Open Country, the Farm Dogs follow up, Immigrant Sons, displays the natural progression of their music. Taupin's lyrics are the brush strokes on the canvas created by the flawless, stinging instrumentation and background vocals provided by Cregan and Le Mesurier (both formerly of Rod Stewart's band), Brock, and Wadhams. Once again, co-producer David Cole (formerly worked with Bob Seger, Poco, Tina Turner, Steve Miller) has provided the catalyst that hones these songs to perfection without an overbearing hand.
Collectively, these songs pick up where the best days of groups like the Eagles left off. If you enjoyed their debut, wait until you hear this one! And if you get the chance to catch the Farm Dogs in concert, you're in for a real treat!
