Customer Reviews:
Great for Driving.......2007-02-15
Bought this just from listening on Amazon. I wish I could find more compilations like this. For the most part I enjoy the entire disc. It's not "traditional" celtic music, but updated pop/rock/folk utilising celtic instruments.
Give it a listen. If you like what you hear on the samples, you'll enjoy this disc.
Intriguing.......2005-07-28
I stumbled across this one at a library. "hmm...well, it don't cost nuthin' to try" I thought and checked it out. It's been on my top list ever since.
The cover and title might be a bit misleading, since there's no punk-head-bashing-drunken-riot songs that one might expect from such a presentation and cover picture. All in all it's closer to folk than to anything else, BUT: there's damn good tunes and songs in there, to suit akmost anybody with an open ear for something good.
I won't list all my fovorites since that's nearly the entire album, but as an expatriot "Beaujolais Nouveau" nearly reduced me to tears, and the opening track is a great tune with nice electronics to complement it.
Highly recommended
Tasty and filling, too!.......2005-05-12
When I was a kid, just ten years old, I took a trip to the Pacific Northwest. It was the summer of 1968, and as a wide-eyed boy from the Midwest, I experienced things that were far from my norm -- mountains, the ocean, forests, hippies, etc. But one thing that really stood out for me was this: it was the first time I had ever experienced a hamburger served with mayonnaise.
Okay, bear with me on this one.
You see, as a boy from Missouri, we were used to the "standard" fare on our burgers: ketchup, mustard, pickle, cheese, and, if we were lucky, lettuce and tomato. But mayonnaise? On a burger? Somehow, that just didn't seem right. But since my mother had already paid for lunch, and since husky boys always seemed to eat whatever was in front of them, I took a bite. I have eaten mayo on my burgers ever since.
So, what the hell does this burger story have to do with a CD of Scottish rock & roll? Well, just as that lunch introduced me to two taste treats combined for a new experience for me, this CD successfully manages to bring together widely divergent styles of music to create something fresh and exciting for my musical palate.
Now, I have to be honest: Celtic music generally leaves me a bit cold, and when I think of Scottish music, I immediately think of the cat-in-heat sound of bagpipes playing "Amazing Grace." Ugh! Still, when browsing at a local record store, this CD caught my eye. It wasn't the title or the picture of a young man with a guitar on the cover that piqued my curiosity. No, it was the description on the back of the CD that made me decide to give the album a chance. "Rhythm 'n' reels?" it asks. "Hip hop folk?" it inquires. Alternative ballads and indie jigs?" It was precisely these comparisons that made me give the album a second look.
I had never heard of the artists on the album, and some of their monikers had me scratching my head. Bongshang? Shooglenifty? Seelyhoo? The Humpff Family? Was this music, or was this Dr. Seuss? Still, I bit the bullet and bought the album.
[...] Well, maybe, although fiery may be in the eye (or in this case, the ear) of the beholder. This is certainly not a fast-paced punk-out. But it is not the folk of Steeleye Span or Fairport Convention or Fotheringay, either. Sure, we get bagpipes on occasion, and we get a traditional sounding tune every now and then, too. Still, we get jigs that almost sound funky, and anytime you can get jiggy with a jig...well, it's worth a listen or two...or even more.
If you are a record collector with a limited budget and unadventurous tastes, then this album is probably not for you. Go buy a U2 album, and I'm sure you two will be very happy together. But if you are, like me, a voracious consumer of all things musical, I encourage you to give this one a try. Or, if not, at least try a burger with mayonnaise. Both will give you sustenance.
Misleading Title.......2005-04-16
First off, I am a big fan of this style of music...
That said, I have enjoyed the CD in general. It is good, quality music. However, not one track can be called 'fiery' let alone live up to the title 'Folk N Hell'. I had expected something a lot more rockin', so to speak. I guess I'll go back to my Brother and Leahy CD's.
Outstanding Beyond Desciption.......1999-11-02
This is an excellent collection of some really great celtic music that makes a fantastic introduction to some very talented Scottish musicians. Buy this CD..this is the best record in my collection of 200+ CDs!
