Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars moving..........2002-10-15

I have been a big fan of Tim's for years, and was greatly saddened by his death. I really wanted to get the CD versions of some of my favorite records- imagine my shock when not even Amazon has the Musician- my favorite album- for sale. Time, it seems, has forgotten the wonderful music of Tim Rose. This CD is a wonderful example of the overwhelming beauty and incredibly emotional lyrics of the gravelly-voiced 'folk' singer who always seemed just seconds too late for much deserved fame and acclaim. In a world where flash and glamour have always been more celebrated than quiet talent, Tim was, simply, a musician.

4 out of 5 stars less than inspired work from inspiring artist.......2000-05-17

Tim Rose produced some of the most inspiring folk-rock music of the late 60s-early 70s. His readings of "Morning Dew" "Hey Joe" and "Come Away Melinda" from his debut solo album inspired rock artists such as Nazareth, the Allman Brothers, Jimi Hendrix, and Uriah Heep, among others. No small feat for a basically acoustic folk artist. Rose's body of work became less inspired as time passed--thus, this, his fifth album, the last released for some 15 years, is much less exciting than any which preceeded it. In fact, this album contains rerecordings of two of his classics "Hey Joe" and "Morning Dew" and in both cases, one must wonder if he was so short on material or motivation that he felt compelled to rework his best known songs, especially considering the fact that there is nothing extraordinarily creative about these reworkings. While "The Musician" continues Rose's trend toward electric music, the sound lacks the clarity and cohesion of his earlier works, and leads one to believe that the years of touring and partying with friends such as Tim Hardin had by this time taken their toll, both musically and emotionally. That is not to say that the 46 minutes contained on this disc are not quite listenable, but rather that it lacks the emotion found in his earlier recordings. It appears no accident that Rose's next album remained in the can for more than 15 years, and then was only in release for a short period of time. The sidemen on "The Musician" are all quite capable, with guitarists Andy Summers (Police) and John Verity (Argent) among them. The recording is, however, a patchwork of session musicians, rather than a cohesive band, and has a rather pedestrian feel. While "The Musician" is an enjoyable recording, I cannot give it a 5 star rating due to its inferior comparison to Rose's 4 earlier albums, all of which are currently available in the 2 lps on 1 cd format, from Beat Goes On and RPM Records of the UK. This is not the place to start exploring Rose's body of work, and should be purchased only after his earlier works have been acquired.

5 out of 5 stars Tim Rose's voice hits hard!.......1999-06-30

Tim Rose has one of the greatest voices I've heard in a long time! His growling and yelling really get the blood pumping and the music's grungy guitar lines make you feel free. I highly recommend "The Big Three" featuring Tim Rose, James Hendricks, and my favorite female vocalist Cass Elliot. "Nora's Dove" by this trio is the epitome of Tim Rose's sexy voice. Buy Tim Rose's cd then buy the Big Three.
