Originally issued in 1973, this compilation of traditional Shetland fiddlers was recorded from tapes collected by the University of Edinburgh's School Of Scottish Studies, over a period from 1970-1973. It is part of a collection of tapes preserving Scotland's traditional oral culture - a project spanning over 40 years, recording singers, storytellers, and instrumentalists. The fiddle music of the Shetland Islands have both Scottish and Norwegian influences, with, to a much lesser extent, some Irish influence. These recordings feature, for the most part, an older generation of players who learned their craft the traditional way, from the older players of their youth. This is a very small sampling of the abundance of fiddlers and music from Shetland. Some of these musicians names are familiar to listeners and players of this music - Tom Anderson, Willie Hunter, Sr. and Jr., Bobby Jamieson - and others are not as well-known, but nonetheless fine players. The several islands that make up Shetland are represented in the tune selection. The emphasis here is on dance music, principally reels, although there is one slow air. The famed composer Ronnie Cooper appears as an accompanist to Willie Hunter, Jr. The performances themselves, carefully selected, demonstrate each player's personal style. The playing is raw, rambunctious, unaffected, and a pure joy. Keep in mind, though, that these are field recordings collected on tape recorders around 30 years ago, with the sound quality ranging from poor to fair. This may be a little too raw for the uninitiated. If you've never heard Shetland fiddle music, you might want to start out with the studio recording made by Tom Anderson, Trevor Hunter, Davy Tulloch, and Anderson's star pupil, Aly Bain, an album called "The Silver Bow." Anderson and Bain later recorded a duo follow-up album, "Shetland Folk Fiddling, Vol. II." Both albums have been reissued on one CD. "Shetland Fiddle Music" is an indispensable way to hear traditional Shetland fiddle styles, and, if you're a folk musician, to learn some great tunes!
