Jean Redpath, through the use of ancient praise songs, readings from The New Testament is Scots, quiet and gentle poems that draw us immediately into introspection, and achingly beautiful versions of somewhat more familiar Christmas songs, takes the listener on a journey of renewal, of re-realization of the meaning and emotional content of Christmas.

The simple accompanying intrumentation is a perfect counterpart to Ms Redpath's unique mezzo-/contra-tenor style voice, and the cello particularly blends with her voice in gorgeous harmony.

The translation of the title song, Still the Night, provides yet again a familiar but fresh Christmas experience, the words seeming more meaningful than our every-year Silent Night translation.

This is perhaps the most beautiful albumn I have heard, and I have heard thousands.
