Customer Reviews:
A True Folk Music Gem.......2006-11-09
I have owned this album since it was first released around 1961, and it remains one of my favorites. The Trio is in superb form, with great harmonies and Chad's extraordinary soaring tenor rising above the solid accompaniment by Jim McGuinn (who later changed his first name to Roger and founded the Byrds). The fact that this was recorded live only testifies to the Trio's talent, as their sound could not be improved if it were a studio recording. This is a must for any fan of folk music, and will be a special treat for those who are unaware of the Trio.
the perfect introduction to the chad mitchell trio.......2004-09-04
i'm another who's been listening to (and singing along with) this group for decades. and, even after countless hearings, i'm still amazed at the musicianship and the brilliance of the arrangements.
chad mitchell's voice is phenomenal--and i don't like tenors. but i could listen to him for hours at a time. the technique, the colors, the range--this is a performer to measure others against.
the harmonies and counterpoint are fabulous. the arrangements are spectacular. the width, breadth and depth of musical knowledge and taste and style on this album (and their others) are apparently things of the past, but at least we have the group's recordings to remind us of a time when musicians AND their audiences actually knew something about real music, not just manipulative staging.
i use this group, in particular this album, along with the tannahil weavers, to demonstrate that you really really do NOT need amplification for excitement.
if i had a list of best 100 american albums, this would be on it, close to the top, along with ella's cole porter and bernstein's shostakovich 5th.
I WORE MY ALBUMS OUT.......2002-09-02
I,too, have been listening to the Chad Mitchell Trio for more years than I care to admit. I inherited the albums from my older brother and over the years nearly wore them out (and probably my parents' sanity) from playing them over and over. I have always loved the intricacies of the music and the social commentary of many of the songs. Thank heavens, I finally got them on CD and am now happy as a clam listening to them! Mighty Day on Campus has to be my favorite but all of them go to work with me and I play them during my morning commute to work!
When Folk Music Was Fun.......2001-01-27
I recently saw the Kingston Trio in concert and couldn't believe the good time had by all. Listening to their classics and their new songs, I was reminded of all of the folk albums my parents played when I was a child. Without a doubt the best of those albums was "Mighty Day on Campus" by the Chad Mitchell Trio.
I was only 7 or 8 when we first listened to this album on vinyl, and I almost wish the CD had the slightly scratchy sound that made the album so fun. Yet when I recently heard "Lizzi Borden" again for the first time in more than 10 years, I was taken back to my childhood. The song is hilarious, as is "Super Skier" and "Rum by Gum." The Chad Mitchell Trio represents a genre of American folk music that was laugh-out-loud fun, irreverent, and witty. The melodies are engaging and the songs are easy to sing along with. This, folks, is what good music is all about. If you loved the Kingston Trio, you'll love the Chad Mitchell Trio.
Buy this CD and find out what you have been missing all these years!
Epitome of College Folk Singers.......1999-06-27
Mighty Day on Campus is the epitome of the '60's folk singing phenomenon, bright, bouncy, irreverant and it is obvious both artists and audience are enjoying themselves. The Johnny compilation is well done while Swing on the Bell Nellie always makes me smile, even after listening to it for longer than I care to admit, both on vinyl and CD
