Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Unplugged & Half-cocked .......2005-08-09

The second release in the "Archive " series finds our lads in Melbourne, Austrailia on 23 March 1996. This is "Acoustic" Fairport (without drummer Dave Mattacks) .
This is by far the best live Fairport Convention recording out there right now.
The first thing you will notice is the band has not spent much time at the bar prior to this concert and their performance is "Spot-On". Second, the sound quality on this disk is AMAZING! Compare this to any other live CD's you own, This one has fantastic separation between the guitars, fiddle and the bass and sparkles as the sound is just soo good. Third, this was Maartin Allcock's last year with Fairport and his level of playing here is quite something to behold.

The concert disk begins with "Slipjigs & Reels" up next is "Woodworm Swing" and "Crazy Man Michael". The best versions of "The Naked Highwayman", "Portmeirion", "The Deserter" (this is not the 1969 tune, it is from Simon Nicol's 1st solo album) are included as well. The great James Taylor tune "Frozen Man" is my favorite cut on the disk. But that said it's all great right through to the closing "Matty Groves", and as a bonus "Rosie" featuring Dave Swarbrick (he was living in Austrailia during this period) is tacked on at the end.

This is 73 minutes of the best live music there is, BUY IT!
A true for real 5 star disk and it belongs in any music collection, I know it seems pricey but it don't get better than this folks. (At least untill they release Vol. 3!!!)
