Customer Reviews:
A gorgeous and compelling gem........2003-04-01
This is a remarkable CD. The songs range from lovely to stunning, the words are elegant, the music well crafted. Lynn Miles sings beautifully - often wistful and mournful, at times shimmering and inspiring. Her voice is both earthy and mysterious.
This is the finest of her three American releases. There are stunning songs on the other two albums, "Night in a Strange Town" and "Unravel." While "Night" has more studio polish, and "Unravel" is far more daring and varied in its arrangements, the songs and the singing in "Slightly Haunted" shine through with the kind of elegance that can make you fall in love with a singer, a song, an album. Some of the songs here are so perfectly realized that they seem simple, natural and almost timeless.
This is not the album for you if you don't like sad songs. I don't know of anyone who has better conveyed the aching awareness that love is dying, the enduring wrestle with the power of loneliness, the waning of warmth and daylight as a long Canadian winter moves in, or the sheer exuberant miracle of survival.
My advice is to get this CD. If you like it, find a chance to see her. She generally plays in small venues and its a wonderful treat to see a performer of her talent, humor and presence up close and at a small fraction of the price of a heavily promoted concert. You can find listings for her and many others at places like Musi-cal.com. Then, if you are intrigued by some of her other songs, consider buying a CD at the concert. Chances are she'll be there to sign them, the support will mean a lot to her as it does to many singer-songwriters who are unfairly ignored.
My favorite disk from a great artist.......2003-02-13
Why O why isn't Lynn Miles one of the greatest stars in music today? She has a tremendous range, a gorgeous voice, a distinctive style, and she's written a huge number of songs, many of which are as good or better than anything written by her hero, Joni Mitchell. In an era with dozens of female singer-songwriters, most of whom appear to be interchangable clones, she's a unique treasure.
Her songs are moving and affecting, her stage presence is magical and she's wonderfully witty, charming and absolutely gorgeous. If you haven't heard her yet you can't imagine what you're missing. Buy this album.
AMAZING.......2003-01-16
I bought this CD when it first came out. I'd never heard of her of course but they had it at the listening station in a Tower Records store and I ended up just standing there listening to the entire CD. I was blown away. The songs are mostly meloncholy some maybe even bordering on dark, but they are all beautiful. I still listen to it almost weekly these many years later. I was disappointed by her follow up to this album, but her most recent release, Unravel, has restored my faith in her.
I freakin' cried.......2002-07-17
Jeez! this lady; who likes to sing about the seasons, has a gift that few others possess. If your sad and you need a good bawling session, then i suggest you put this on. Absolutely beautiful acoustic songwriting. She's regarded as one of the best folk artist out there;ask Fred Eaglesmith, and it wont take you long to find out why after listening to this. Her new disc,UNRAVEL,is wonderful too.
A poignant haunting.......2002-02-21
I love how the melodies and Lynn's ethereal voice eminate from the music and surround you like a crisp yet familiar Winter breeze. The emotions are poignant to anyone who self-reflects on his/her slightly haunted past that we all share.
