Nostalgia of youth.......2006-11-19

My parents had this album as an actual phonograph record when I was a young boy. I listened to it repeatedly because I liked the big orchestration on some of the tracks along with the pop sounding music. Years later, after having played in many orchestras, jazz bands, and rock bands, I am still just as fond of the music on this album as I was decades ago.

I was disappointed. I thought there would be many of the original Mason Williams' songs. I, especially, wanted "A Gift of Song", which was advertised, and it was not on the CD. I really want to find a CD that has it. Did Mason Williams ever put that song on a CD? His earlier works were fantastic! I loved them as a young adult.

Let's just FACE it; OK? There's 12 songs on this album, and 11 of the 12 simply are BORING, and they SUCK! But the one song which does NOT suck is a true piece of GENIUS, a "Mona Lisa" in the world of music; probably the post popular and amazing instrumental acoustic guitar composition of all time; a song that sounds as good and as unique 2day as it did when it was released way back in '67 or '68... A song which makes Mason Williams' life worthwhile to have been lived; and that song, a true musical jewel of history, is:

It Could Be Much Better.......2005-12-02

I have enjoyed Classical Gas for years in two versions, both as a solo and with orchestral background and now with Manheim Steamroller I'll be able to have three excellent pieces of music.
Sunflower is another piece better done with the Steamroller.
Longtime Blues was well done by the Kingston Trio many years ago. The rest of the album is more or less a waste of time unless you happen to be happy with second rate stuff.
Sorry, Mason but thats my feeling.

One of the finest singles ever released, Classical Gas, is heard here in digital clarity. It's extraordinary that it is so rarely heard these days and hopefully this CD will find it a new audience. The remaining tracks are mostly songs and are a unique tribute to the style of the day. Both lyrical and whimsical they pay tribute to an age that was both innocent, yet thought it was the height of "trendy", and corny, yet thought itself profound.
