Customer Reviews:
Get it if you find !.......2004-12-07
It's safe to say that I bought this CD just for ''Ain't That Enough for You.'' I had been long looking for its extended version on CD and this was it. The tune was so danceable and memorable as to be played often at discos in Japan in around 1978-80, and is even nowadays at dance classic-oriented clubs here. Generally speaking, Japanese people like to dance to the catchy (a little cheesy...I admit) melody that such a song like this has. The other titles in the CD including those of Gary's Gang can be seen in other disco compilations, but it's worth owning it just with the rare ''Ain't That...'', if you are a ''cheerful disco'' aficionado like me. I find this CD has long been out of print, so grab it when you find it used or whatever!!!
Hardcore for the Hardcore.......2003-05-19
Some songs that were known in underground NYC clubs long before they received radio airplay. From the dayze when the dance was almost everything. I was there, Thank God!!!
Surprisingly good collection from a minor NY C disco label.......2003-04-26
Though surely lagging Salsoul, West End and Prelude in impact, Sam Weiss' indie label enlivened dance floors and added sparkle to Saturday afternoons by the radio from Spanish Harlem to Staten Island.
The label briefly hit commercial paydirt early on, when demand for Gary's Gang's "Keep On Dancin'" led Sam to license the single to Columbia. It sold several hundred thousand copies.
Higlights of this disc:
1) "Let's Do It," Convertion (1980). Anthemic black gay disco record, pumped to this day on New York radio. Leroy Burgess' avant-garde crooning contrasts delightfully with the disco dolly backups. Comic, slightly erotic, and one of Patrick Adams' best productions.
2) "This Beat Is Mine," Vicky D (1981). Streety disco record par excellence, with sassy singsong vocals and rollicking bass and synth work. "It's the hook that makes you cook!"
3) "Hupendi Musiki Wangu?!(You Don't Like My Music)", K.I.D. (1982). Mysterious "sleeper" instrumental, somewhat reminiscent of Michael Jackson's "Don't Stop Till You Get Enough." This record was less energetic, but effective enough to become an early-morning favorite of the hustle crowd.
4) "Just How Sweet Is Your Love?", Rhyze (1981). Brief, excellent Larry Levan-mixed record with butch vocals and a powerful arrangement equally driven by vocals, orchestration, and key changes. Probably big only in the Paradise Garage and similar clubs; but certainly one for connoisseurs.
BTW: The sound quality on this disc is adequate. AVOID Vol. II, which has inferior tracks and sounds as it if were transcribed on one of those "Close & Play" toy record players your kid sister had...

Good Rareties Set.......2001-07-25
SAM Records has assembled here a collection of dance music from the late 70's and early 80's that contains less filler than most compilations. The selections range from two poppish Gary's Gang grooves, a pair of John Davis and the Monster Orchestra tracks (the emotive "Ain't That Enough" and the funky "I Can't Stop," sampled memorably on Vanessa William's "Running Back To You" ), and KID's great "You Don't Like My Music." This is a CD that can be put on during a party without fear of weak spots or cheese.
