very lounge-y.......2001-10-10
maybe i've not been following omar as closely as i should've since i was first turned onto him in 97, but i was a little dismayed to find out that he'd gone lounge. although as a musician i'll admit, it's fun to get schmaltzy, i have to say it already sounds dated. fortunately, the whole track isn't like that. the tune with erykah badu on it - 'gangster whitewalls' or whatever - could've been so much more. if you're gonna redo a song, then put a new spin on it. unfortunately it never even tops the original, which grooves but is repetetive.
a couple of standout tracks on it, but too much lounge for me.
ONE OF THE BEST.......2001-10-04
Omar's vocals, fused with a sense of chill that he and his team have put together, have put re-established another form of soul.Unlike some of his contempories,Omar does shirk the flagrant use of synths and samples but utlises these in such a manner as to amalgate 60's/70's funky soul with more contemporary pace and beats. The best example- 'something real'is spectacular because it incorporates well-known two-step beat with funky hip-hop sound against classic soul vocals.'Come On' with Kele Le Roc emphasises that Omar can also remain full soulful as well.It is hard to understand, why he is still relatively unknown, yet comes out with such breathtaking music.
