the best drum-and-bass that never was.......2001-01-20

Yeah, yeah, drum-and-bass. We've all heard it, from Volkswagen commercials to muzak and back, and it all sounds pretty much the same, now doesn't it? Well, not this. It's a crime that this didn't get the attention it deserves. Like Autechre, these guys have their own idea what can be done with tinny double-time beats, and it has nothing to do with the claustrophobic boredom that most of the genre induces after five minutes of listening. "Busy..." is, first of all, LOUD. The drums are crisp, bright, and clear, and the bass on "bells" sounds like it's coming from the bowels of the earth. I'm told that the guys from Spiritualized had a hand in this, and it shows. This is, first and foremost, an ALBUM, and it flows like one. It's theatric and melodic and tremendously imaginative. The first two tracks are augmented with sax and horns and sound like a car chase from "Blade Runner." "Hale Bopp" is an incredible and beautiful track that puts the rest of the genre to shame, and the whole album is recapped on "The Wrong Guide." I can't help but be reminded of "OK Computer," both in terms of style and sheer ingenuity. A year from now, this will be the only drum-and-bass album you still listen to.
