Reissues like this one are always befuddling. Why has a session featuring the great Art Farmer's flügelhorn next to guitarist Jim Hall's chameleonic grace, bassist Steve Swallow's feather-touch bass, and Pete LaRoca's drums languished in the vaults for decades? Farmer and his crew use Swedish folk melodies as the basis for each of the six songs here, and at points it begins to sound like modal jazz in the 1960s had some odd Nordic strain that's gone heretofore unremarked upon. Farmer's never allowed himself to be bullied or hurried, favoring wide swaths of tone over speed or even exactness. Hall's perfect at this game, playing clean and pristine single notes and then ripping into a grit-filled series of riffs that precede an unerringly risky solo of bent corners and blunted runs. Farmer's mid-1960s discography has lots of material in it, and this short session (time length is just over 32 minutes) adds far more than its duration hints. --Andrew Bartlett

Steve Swallow and Pete LaRoca are truly dynamic-- they make the group swing like a mellower John Coltrane quartet. And Jim Hall's improvisations are acceptionally interesting. Farmer is solid as always. The melodies aren't exactly "jazzy" but the arrangements are good, and once the improvisation starts, each tune is jazz played at a very high level.
