5 out of 5 stars unclassifiably great.......2006-09-16

I have very broad music tastes, and I find a bit of every genre in this album, which might be one of the most diverse albums to be classified as 'rock'. The lyrics are especially wonderful. Don't miss "Sandra at Beach" if you're listening to clips before purchasing.

3 out of 5 stars You could do worse.......2002-09-10

OK, people, I'm talking to you. No five star review, I go by Rolling Stone standards and this is a three star album. Several good tracks but there wouldn't be so many remixes of the songs on other albums if they were happy with the final product. PDP was still cutting their techno teeth and didn't refine their sound until Electric Plumawhatever. But, honestly you could do worse, if this is your first PDP purchase, go with Liquid White Light because it captures their live sound very well. Side Note: Don't you hate five star reviews for everything? I do too, and three stars is nothing to be ashamed of.

5 out of 5 stars A Great Cd That Get's You Moving!.......1999-02-09

I first encountered Poi Dog Pondering this past summer when they opened for the Dave Matthews Band. I loved the energy of their show and the original sound of their music. I picked up this CD and love it. It's easy to listen to and is fun and up-beat. The music ranges from soft, quiet music like "Pomegranate" and "Sandra At The Beach" to the optimistic, jazzy tunes of "Complicated" and "Diamonds and Buttermilk"

5 out of 5 stars This one made me a Poi fan........1998-11-26

Being from the Chicago area originally, I'd known of the band quite a while before this record was released. This was the first one I bought, however. "Complicated" hooked me, but it's "Catacombs" and "Big Constellation" that stick in my head most. I got to see them when they played in Champaign last year, and it was one of the best shows I've seen in a long time.

5 out of 5 stars One of the most interesting mix of music you will ever hear.......1998-10-22

Poi Dog is the best local(Chicago) band that you will ever hear. If you like Dave Matthews, you will love Poi Dog. Every time I listen to this CD it gets me moving and shaking. They make upbeat songs that make you want to get up and have some fun. Once you listen you will be hooked for life. So all you people that do not have this CD, get off your ass and go buy it.

    Product Description

With this recording, Iakovos Kolanian sets a new standard in the interpretation and performance of Armenian music in the Classical idiom. What he presents here to the listener is not an ordinary transcription of this material for the classical guitar but, rather, a meditation on these choice Armenian folk tunes that is the fruit of many years of study, reflection and refinement. Owing to an almost instinctive feel for this music, he bestows each individual piece with a unique touch that has been shaped by his solid grounding in the traditions of the Spanish guitar, his devotion to the music of J. S. Bach and, of course, his natural affinity for Komitas. Aside from his breathtaking virtuosity, however, it is ultimately the musical refinement and emotional depth that distinguishes Kolanian's playing. The gems that he has created with this recording deserve to be treasured, and are sure to become a reference, for many years to come. -Kevork Imirzian

5 out of 5 stars A Spiritual Journey That No One Should Miss!.......2004-07-01

The Pomegranate Seed once again showcases Cosy Sheridan's ability to bring the listener through an unforgettable experience. From Barbie dolls to fad diets, from Eve to the tragi-comic experience of bathing suit shopping, Cosy becomes Everywoman and comes to grips with her body, her self-image and all that it implies, and in the end, finding a way to joyfully inhabit her own body.
Consider this a concept album that can be broken into individual songs that stand, all by themselves, as works of art.

Cosy's guitar work and voice are beautifully augmented by Kent Allyn's harmonies and virtuoso bass and guitar, not to mention his stylized keyboard work. Steve Schuch breathes an added dimension with his violin work, John Faggiano's percussion is a strong, yet not overpowering, presence in "Survivor" and "My Mother's House",and Eric Holter's harmonies add a soulful touch to "My Mother's House". If there was an album whose creation I would like to have witnessed this would be the one. Some of the songs here have been recorded before by Cosy, but "The Little Train", "The Losing Game", "Sharp Objects" and "Bad Cliche" are painstakingly reworked and transformed to blend into this beautiful and sometimes dark journey. In the end as we discover in "You Can Always Go Home", "..there are more ways over the rainbow than just sorrow, loss and pain.."
This cd is also the soundtrack to Cosy's One-Woman Musicalogue and when she performs it in your area, be in the audience but bring a box of tissues..you will be transfixed and transformed.

    Customer Reviews:

3 out of 5 stars A surprisingly average collection from a superb artist........2003-05-29

I bought this album for the demo of "The Mountain" and the two tracks I don't have because I haven't yet gotten my hands on Berry's first album, Below The Waves. As such a fan, it might seem odd I rate this album as average. I can't help it--although Berry is a truly wonderful singer and musician, to me, this "anthology" is less impressive than any other single studio album. Isn't that weird? I can't sort out exactly why. It might have to do with the absence of some of the songs by her that most moved me: "For The Rose" and "Ariel" from her self-titled record; "Hand Over Head", "Bright As Day", and "Lily" from Love; and "Holy Grail" from Miracle. These tracks are gorgeous, and I can't believe at least a few of them are not included! Some of the songs on this anthology are Berry at her best, but others, though very good indeed, were most powerful when part of the record from which they came. As it is, this disc lacks the cohesive zap of each of her studio albums as well as the awe and curiousity a retrospective could inspire. But I could be wrong. Don't forget the bottom line is that if you don't know Heidi Berry already, you won't regret any introduction to her, whether it's this album or others. Whichever you chose, plan to buy more. Berry is timeless and familiar, in the way a lullaby, hymn, or folk song can be.

5 out of 5 stars The finest female singer/songwriter there has been.......2002-07-04

Anyone who believes in beautiful songs and beautiful artistic mastery should own this compilation, then buy a couple of Heidi's albums. Heidi is simply the best female singer/songwriter there has ever been. Not only does she have the most beautiful and powerful voice, but also the best and most affecting songs. Anyone who has listened to the debut album by Rosie Thomas and enjoyed it, should discover Heidi Berry, as she did it first, and with more vision. Heidi's songs are not just beautiful listening experiences, they are a guide to living. She says things in a direct and sensible way, but makes them sound revelatory. Her music is the definition of timeless. It's sad that Heidi has only been allowed to release four albums. She has been without a record deal for several years, and this is criminal, considering her amazing talent. Any record label should be honoured to have her on their roster, but unfortunately the music business is anything but ideal. Even the virtuous 4AD could no longer fund her recordings, given the small audience, and the level of studio expertise put into the recordings. All the pieces here are wonderful, but it's worth owning for the rare track, 'Needle's Eye', which is one of the most staggeringly visionary recordings ever released, Heidi's vocal climbing and climbing into a strange howl/scream. Every song Heidi has recorded has been pure, from the heart, without pretension, and utterly inimitable. She deserves a much bigger audience than she has. One day she will be regarded as one of the finest musical artists of her or any generation. At the moment, she is still an overwhelming secret.

    5 out of 5 stars Loved It!!!!.......2002-06-03

I heard Heidi Berry for the first time on AOL Radio Folk - and I was hooked. The songs on "Pomegranate" really touched me. The more I listen to them, the more I want to buy her other CD's. The tunes and lyrics are almost dreamlike. I wish the CD came with the libretto!

5 out of 5 stars a secret you should unfold.......2001-04-25

Heidi Berry is a wonderful secret. Long before Beth Orton this US born female crooner became a master of diamond shaped sad pop songs. Berry who grew up in England recorded first with Alan Mcgee on Creation, then moved to 4-ad where she became an Ivo treasure. No other artist in the universe can claim that kind of nobility. But let forget labels, Berry is one of the best singers-songwriters to emerge in the 80's and now is a good time for a compilation of all her best music. Berry chose to show here her sweeter and more optimistic songs as she thinks they represent better her mood these days. So please make yourself a favor and become a member of the Heidi Berry club. You get the best music and the exclusivity of connoisseurs.

    ABOUT GOR MKHITARIAN- YERAZ

Gor Mkhitarian's long-awaited debut solo album is finally here. Released on the upstart world/classical music label Pomegranate Music, Mkhitarian's album entitled, "Yeraz", has been hailed as one of the most anticipated independent world music releases of the year by several industry insiders. Produced by Raffi Meneshian and recorded in Armenia by Mika Margarian, "Yeraz" is a contemporary Armenian folk masterpiece consisting of 11 songs featuring two acoustic guitars, percussion, and a banjo. Mkhitarian penned 9 songs on the album while arranging 2 traditional Armenian folks songs including, "Gakavik", by Komitas.

With "Yeraz", Mkhitarian makes a case of writing the next chapter in Armenia's rich musical history by updating the sound and feel of the classic Armenian folk song. Gor gets down to basics by giving the listener meaningful lyrics, simple arrangements, and melodic hooks creating warm and full-bodied acoustic songs. It's Armenian music as never been heard before. Fresh, accessible, and ground-breaking are the only words to describe "Yeraz". Guest musicians include Aharon Stayman and Jason Demerjian.

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The Armenian Dave Matthews.......2003-01-10

This is a subtle, powerful, and enjoyable album that achieves greatness through the intellegence of the musicians. When I was first introduced to this album, I was immediately stuck by the thoughtful translated lyrics and the banjo. The acoustic flavor gives this album a folksy feel. I would say that "Yeraz" is a breakout album.

5 out of 5 stars Something old and something new.......2002-08-14

I discovered this CD from my friend Aaron Stayon who was in Armenia for two year with the Peace Core. While there he met singer/song writer Gor Mkhitarian and together they produced this album. The CD CD blends traditional Armenia music with rock and folk and has a modern feel. The musical style is influenced by Simon & Garfunkel, The Dave Matthews Band, and Bob Dylan. I highly recommended it.

5 out of 5 stars Dreamy, Intelligent Songs That Move You.......2000-04-06

I recently re-discovered this gem after several years of having it gather dust on my shelf, and boy am I glad I did. It is a real masterpiece from an under-rated band.

Poi weaves together guitars, drums, violins, flutes, cellos, pianos and more to create an enchanting and driving sound -- one that is never as dischordant as you would expect. Each of the 11 songs is strong on its own, but together they play out like a supremely well-crafted symphony. "Complicated" forces you to get to your feet and dance, while "Pomegranate" is a more mellow exploration of sounds. The lyrics to "God's Gallipoli" are worth memorizing for their power. This is a diverse and challenging album that may not be immediately accessable to all listeners, but I urge you to stick with it. You will be richly rewarded.
