it's great to be able to buy some of my old classic favorites from others who no longer listen to them

5 out of 5 stars For my mum........2007-02-27

I remember listening to the vinyl version of this with my mother. I remember hazy sunlight filtering through our hippy curtains, the flared jeans and tight tops, the feeling that something wonderful was about to happen. I remember (barely) Watergate and my dad's Monte Carlo and the constant sound of music my young parents played. That Phoebe Snow had a miserable career (and life) after this album (perhaps before) breaks my heart because it so epitomizes a time in my life and a feeling in the air from say 73-76 that there was a mellow, meloncholy force of good in the world that is now of course no where to be found.

5 out of 5 stars A Timeless Gem .......2006-07-13

I've had this CD awhile (first owned as a cassette) and played it often for years. In going through my music to see what treasures are so essential that they must be replaced, this was way high on the list. (So was another of the incomparable Snow's work, Something Real.)
Snow's VOICE is impossible to easily characterize, so I won't try. But she is, simply put, a unique and brilliant interpreter of songs, not a mere singer. Whatever the emotion of the song, she captures it completely and conveys it so intensely that you experience it as your own.
That is artistry.

5 out of 5 stars Phoebe Snow CD - released 1974.......2006-02-25

Excellent disc! Jazz, blues, folk, rock all fused into one. Phoebe can fingerpick guitar like WOW! Uses interesting chord voicings too. She's surrounded by excellent musicians on this disc. I bought the LP when it was originally released in 1974, then traded it away a few years later. Am real glad I acquired it again.

5 out of 5 stars phoebe snow - debut album.......2005-06-05

I first heard this album way back in 1974, via Phoebe's "Poetry Man". The soft velvety texture of her voice on this song, as well as "San Francisco Bay Blues", made me a fan for life. I never forgot the impact she made on me with her singing and I had hoped that many people would discover her music. Only now are people discovering and in some cases, "rediscovering" her. She never went out of style for me, and I for one am glad she is finally finding her place in the sun with a new allegiance of younger fans. I still have my old vinyl album. Incidentally, many people may also be surprised to realize this album was originally produced by Shelter Records. Yes, that's right, the recording studio of the "Master of Space and Time" himself, the great Leon Russell! The producer of the album was Dino Airali and the co-producer and engineer was Phil Ramone, with the record distributed by MCA Records. Long live the essence of Phoebe!

5 out of 5 stars Phoebe Snow...Rediscovered.......2007-05-12

Something deep inside compelled me to find and repurchase this album recently. I did further research and found that I received it in the mail on the day that Phoebe's daughter died. When I played it for the first time, I was immediately transported back 30 years to front row seats at her concert in Sacramento. She wooed me with her depth, her resonance, her soul and I was fully captivated by her for two hours, caught in the trance of her mana. Her music continues to soothe and comfort. I am so happy to have brought this album, and more specifically her music and soul back into my life. Thank You Phoebe.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Phoebe Snow is a must have !.......2006-08-08

The Very Best of Phoebe Snow is a wonderful compilation of some of her best songs..The live version of Harpo's Blues alone is
worth the purchase.

If you are a fan of Phoebe's music you will not be
disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars The Very Best of Phoebe Snow.......2005-07-27

This is one of the best Phoebe Snow efforts ever. The product was delivered in a timely and accurate manner. I will order again.

5 out of 5 stars If I had ONE CD to take on a Desert Island.......2005-05-24

Sweet, melancholy, simple, frustrated, satisfied, redeeming, soulful, tearful, hopeful, in love, in denial, in ecstacy. This CD is the one I would pick if I could only take one CD on a desert island! The bodacious self-confidence, the plain-girl insecurity, the longing in her voice is that of just about every woman. "I am I good enough?" "I am MORE than good enough!!!" Each song is like a movie. I never tire of this CD.

4 out of 5 stars A Good Launching Pad.......2005-03-05

Is this truly "the very best" of Phoebe Snow? With any artist that is as great and influential as her that is always going to be a subjective question. Yes, you'll find the hits (Poetry Man), the covers, and some previously unreleased versions of Harpo's Blues and Good Times (both live versions). But the original albums, like their contemporaries (Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, etc.), so vividly convey the heydey of the 1970's singer-songwriter inspiration and cultural/musical interblending that has so badly gone in the wrong direction since.

There is no substitute for the originals; they'll bring you back to a place when music truly meant something and changed lives. Thirty years later, Phoebe's sound is still quite distinct and stealthily sophisticated.

This is a great introduction to Phoebe Snow, who is clearly going to get the love and appreciation that she has had coming to her in upcoming years. People like Norah Jones very clearly are fishing downriver from people like her.

5 out of 5 stars Finally!!!.......2007-01-18

This CD (album at the time) was my introduction to Ms. Snow back in the mid 70's. She was a guest on Saturday Night Live and sang "The Married Man". I fell in love with the voice and went out the following day to purchase the album. The entire album rocked and I played it to death! Her voice and style were so distinctive. By the early 90's my turntable finally wore out and my CD collection was expanding. I could never find this particular album in CD form. I purchased a lot of Ms. Snow's projects and always kept an eye out for "Against the Grain". I finally found it the other night and was overjoyed. It's on order as I type this review. All the the songs on the disc are first rate. My favorite is "Shoreline". Snow sings it in a wistful/longing style and it mirrored my life at the time. The song has always had a special meaning to me. I'm still crazy about "The Married Man" as well as L.A. I can't wait to listen to one of my favorite albums (now CD) of the 70's again. Phoebe Snow is and will remain the bomb!

4 out of 5 stars Masterpiece.......2005-10-18

Second Childhood is possibly Phoebe Snow's masterpiece. The songs - the self-written ones - examine every neurosis imaginable. Being frightened by children laughing in the streets, terrorised by romantic entanglements, depression, loneliness, substance abuse. There is nowhere she isn't willing to go.

Phoebe doesn't remember much of this material. If you shout out for these songs at her concerts, she's likely to say, "I can't remember it."

By the way, Phoebe isn't - as some weird reviewer alleged - a pale-skinned black woman. She's caucasian, Jewish, with very curly hair. That comment reminded me of the people who thought Janis Ian was black. No matter. It's just odd that people think that race is relevent when assessing an artist. Phoebe could be white, brown, black, red, yellow, indigo, or purple. She'd still be Phoebe Snow, and for that I'm thankful.

5 out of 5 stars Huzzah!.......2003-07-08

There are so few light-skinned black peformers out there these days, and it's a sad fact of life in the international market that Phoebe Snow is one of the VERY few light-skinned black women peforming out here at ALL! This album is a testament to what the world is missing by not paying more attention to a very neglected faction of the world community. This album has more soul that ten Patti La Belle albums, more hipness than twenty Mariah Carey albums and more substance than anything Beyonce Knowles will ever come up with. "All Over", "Cash In" and "No Regrets" are among the best jazzy pop tunes you will ever hear issue from a female larynx, with Phoebe's lazy, husky voice full of nuance in every word.

I had this album when it came out in 1976, and still can't get its haunting arrangements out of my head. Seventy-six was an excellent year for high-quality pop-gems that were discovered quietly by large legions of fans, (witness Heart, Angel, Roderick Falconer, Fleetwood Mac and Renaissance,) and this was one of them.

It always saddens me when someone puts out an excellent album like this and you can't find anything else in their catalog that equals it. I guess I've been spoiled by people like Judy Collins, The Beatles, Donovan and others who could turn out albums chockablck with classics one right after the other and not break a sweat.

Maybe that incident on the 1977 Grammys, where Alice Cooper scared her to death had more of an affect on La Snow than she's willing to let on.

Get this album, it's a classic!

5 out of 5 stars Straight from a woman's heart..........2002-10-09

I was first introduced to the "soulfull blues" sound of Phoebe Snow by my sister at the tender age of sixteen. The youngest of four girls--my insightful sister handed me this album and said,"Listen to this,it might help you understand what being a woman is about." She was right!Phoebe's jazzy voice reaches out to you and her songs touch every woman's heart, more now 22 years later. I will always love this album. Phoebe's voice is incredible! This album helped me to understand the many women in my life. My sister was so right, and she was right on time.

5 out of 5 stars I just like it.......2002-01-17

I don't know any fancy music talk. I just know that I have listened to this album/cd since 1976 and loved it. I like to put a log in the fireplace, kick back in the ol' Lazyboy and enjoy. Thanks Phoebe!

5 out of 5 stars PS, I Love You..........2001-11-02

She sings a folk-like blues pop with that patented PS hinged/unhinged je ne sais quoi in her voice. She herself called her technique an inspired insanity. Simply, it's a classic voice used like a virtuoso violinist. Instantly recognisable, and yet, earthy, soulful and real. (She has done a lot of commercials, by the by). I dig her body of work overall, but this is my favorite CD/album with the great tunes "Two Fisted Love" and the jazzy "No Regrets".

2 out of 5 stars Can she EVER be understood in the studio?.......2004-06-13

I just don't understand...

Phoebe Snow is one of the most talented musicians ever to come along, yet her studio work is hit-and-miss, at best, with far more misses than hits.

This album is no exception. Most of the songs simply crawl along like dysthymic disorder, with no identifiable purpose. This is unfortunate, because when she POPS, no one connects better with an audience. Live versions of "At Last" and "Good Times" will clear up any doubt about this.

Will there ever be a "PHEOBE LIVE" CD?

5 out of 5 stars Warm, Powerful & Rockin Phoebe.......2004-04-13

This is a strong, uplifting, rocking collection of songs by Phoebe. One of the best songs I've heard in awhile is "The Other Girlfriend". What makes an impression are the buildups in the songs. Those vocal crescendo's squeeze my heart every time. The guitar riffs by Jim Chapdelaine sail behind her voice and these songs perfectly. Bought it right after I heard her on the World Cafe radio program. Well written songs...Great Stuff! I hope Phoebe continues to take chances and grow in her music. I can't understand fan's wanting to hear the same album reproduced over and over again. It's death for an artist and stale for the fan. Cheers to those artist's who have the guts to try new things! This is a fresh recording.

1 out of 5 stars I Love Phoebe Snow and always will....but.......2004-01-01

This CD is HORRIBLE!

what was she thinking???

The Phoebester needs to go acoustic and interpret some classics and write some while she is at it.

This collection ins a MESS.

3 out of 5 stars Natural Wonder or Natural Disaster?.......2003-09-09

It's been 5 years since "I Can't Complain." And it sure is GREAT to hear Phoebe Snow back recording a full set. Her tribute to Laura Nyro "Time & Love" was one of my favorite single tracks of hers. Phoebe is in that rare stratosphere for me with Carole King whose CDs come home with me as soon as I see them.

"Natural Wonder" has some amazing things about it. First, Phoebe the singer is, as usual, completely brilliant. This woman could probably sing the phone book; and it would sound great. Jim Chapdelaine who worked with one of my favorite unknown singers, Hugh Blumenfeld, does a masterful job of production. The instruments are crisply recorded, varied, with diverse arrangements that compliment the singer exquisitely. There are also some amazing tracks. Gerard McMahon who made only one record, "No Looking Back" for Warner Bros., in 1982, cowrote the "The Other Girlfriend" with Phoebe with the addictive chorus, "Don't want to be like this, don't want to be like that, I don't want to be the other girlfriend." The song is direct & powerful. Tina Shafer, who has worked with Celine Dion and had songs recorded by Sheena Easton and some band (I kid you not) called Danielle's Mouth, cowrote "Above the Band" which is a perky high energy track with a charming positive flare. My personal favorite track is the one Phoebe wrote by herself, "Key to the Street" which is a smoking electrified breakup song, absolutely stunning!

On this set, however, that is certainly part natural wonder, there is also a bit of natural disaster. That disaster is Steve Fox who cowrites some the worst material I've heard in a long time. Steve apparently worked with the Gay Men's Chorus of Los Angeles which is about the only way one can explain a lyric like, "I remember when George became Christine." I suppose for the handful of folks who have experienced a gender changing operation, this will be a true find. His opener "Sahara" and the closer "Going Home" are not quite as bad, but neither has particularly grabbed me. The one cover tune here "Baby I Need Your Loving" has been recorded by the 4 Tops, Temptations, Supremes & Johnny Rivers' familiar cover is a bit too slow, losing its energy.

It's great to have Phoebe back. Phoebe the singer is a natural wonder & a great treasure. There is enough good material here to make this an excellent addition to your music collection. Enjoy!

5 out of 5 stars Rock inspiring, Uplifting All Natural Wonder...........2003-08-20

Phoebe Snow, Wow, this lady still has one of the best set
of pipes to sing or should I say BELT out her lyrics. Heavy
on a rock sound and a very competent band letting loose beside
her, Phoebe offers up one of her best, most CONFIDENT collections
in many, many years. She still knows how to tear up a song,
she use to tease us with a couple of these here and there on her
earlier albums but this one she's letting her fans know she isn't about to ride off on her past glories but shakes this whole outing with a voice like no others. It grows on you, as
any worthwhile effort should. It needs the time to savor its
many stand outs. I will be listening to this in the days ahead when its cold and I need something HOT to
make it though these cold New England winters. So nice to see
this classic recording artists re-peaking here in 2003! RoCk on
Phoebe Snow, missed your beautiful one of a kind voice.

5 out of 5 stars Snow as a pop rock princess.......2001-11-02

This album seemed so long coming that I had begun to wonder if I had heard the last of Phoebe Snow. Since Snow is eclectic to say the least one never quite knows what to expect, but she is certainly right at home here. Pop is what its all about - latherings of catchy melodies and exuberant and slick playing and production from Ricky Fataar and others. Snow's vocal control is a always exemplary and she makes it all seem so easy - today's pop princesses could do worse than to take some lessons out of this classy demonstration of power pop Think Bonnie Raitt's Nick of Time and you'll be in the right territory but like Raitt, Snow's voice is very much her own and comparisons are odious.

5 out of 5 stars Her comback survival!.......2000-08-17

Phoebe sang alot of comercials and deep jazz cuts like Thankful And Thoughtful in the 80's. She had a AC hit with Dave Mason titled Dreams I Dream. By the end of the 80's she had suffered a heart attack, hence the song Cardiac Arrest, and comeback to the pop/folk scene with this CD. It's a combination of her traditional thoughtful folk writing like the title track to the the spirited single If I Can Just Get Through The Night. She even went as far as recording an updated version of the Emotions disc classic, Best Of My Love, very effectively! Also listen to Mr.Wondering, We May Never Feel This Way Again and the jazzy Soothin'.

5 out of 5 stars A CLASS ACT ALL THE WAY! ! !.......2000-06-04

Phoebe Snow means Talented and gifted. What a truely amazing woman, I wish I had half her talent, Id be rich and famous, but alas I can only dream!

Phoebe has a unique voice that is easily distinctive from the rest, the music is not harsh, allowing her voice to drift over you in all its lyrical beauty is wonderfully satisfying.

I love this album, I have three copies of it in case I lose one, I love it that much, to me she is on par with Stevie Wonder which is high praise indeed, since I love him absolutely! I wish she would recieve more recognition as she is an incredible artist, a singer songwriter a brilliant guitarist and pianist she is so obscenely talented it makes you ill! I am inadequately glad that she exsists, this world would be all the poorer without her. So she is yet another who I HIGHLY RECOMMEND, get a copy enjoy and be pleasantly blown away!

    5 out of 5 stars Without Equal.......2005-12-02

There are such singers and songwriters whose body of work we use to mark the times of our lives. So it is -at least for me- with Phoebe Snow. The intro to "Never Letting Go" is etched in my memory from what seems like eons ago, and yet, Ms. Snow's music is timeless. I can understand a bit more now of why she didn't record for a long time. I've seen her live three times, and wonder why she never sang this of all her songs? She will be a part of my personal music experience forever.

    5 out of 5 stars A Classic.......2004-12-30

The title track and Phoebe's cover of Paul Simon's "Something So Right" are classic tracks that hold up more than 25 years after they were recorded. Phoebe Snow's expressive, unique voice is utilized beautifully on this gem of an album. I love NEVER LETTING GO now as much as I did when I first heard this album as a child.
A classic artist; a classic disc.

    5 out of 5 stars Everything Snow.......2000-06-05

In 1975 I was introduced to Phoebe's music via my dear friend Honey Warren whom I haven't seen in over 15 yr. The 1st thing I heard by her was Poetry Man. I fell in love with the albumn. My little sister introduced me to Second Childhood and I was again mesmerized by her style and realism of life experiences. And then came Never Letting Go which I discovered myself in the record shop one day. I have all of the above mentioned albums. My son wrote me last week and said to me "Mama, my friends don't understand why I like Phoebe Snow so well. I can see you in my minds eye lying in front of the stereo singing you heart out to Phoebe when we were little. I used to wonder "what could that lady be saying that made you play her songs over and over again;' now I understand, and I just tell them it's too deep for you:-)."

5 out of 5 stars A Classic to Hold On To.......2000-02-05

Over 20 years ago, I heard an achingly beautiful song that has haunted me ever since. I didn't catch its name, but I kept singing a bit of the chorus to record store employees and DJs, hoping someone could identify it for me. No luck! And then one day while surfing amazon.com, I started sampling audio clips and I found it: "Majesty of Life" by Phoebe Snow. I ordered the CD, hoping the song would be even half as sensitive and tender as I remembered it, filled with great hopes and fond expectations.

Happily, the album didn't disappoint me in the slightest. "Majesty of Life" is every bit as sweet an expression of yearning in the year 2000 as it was back in 1977, and the other songs on the album are equally timeless (particularly the passionate title track). Miss Snow's vocals throughout are superb; her style is undated and the recording is crisp and clear. This is an album to treasure; I, for one, will never let it go ...

    5 out of 5 stars 22 YEARS LATER, I'M STILL LOVING IT.......1999-11-11

For the young woman in the middle of teenage angst, seeking music as a balm, a audio healing, this album was it for me.

Phoebe sung my woes, my hearts, my joys and my sorrows. My heart may have been broken, but hours listening to Never Letting Go, Something So real, Majesty of Life and We're Children always gave me relief.

Phoebe is as much as part of my younger years as Earth, Wind and Fire Concerts and disco's. Yeah, I was there and so grateful her music allows me to return to it again and again.

22 Years later? Her music is still as fresh and vibrate now as it was then.

    Love you girl...

    Margaret

5 out of 5 stars Singer and Song Come Together and Create Magic.......2003-12-21

I was never a fan of Phoebe Snow while growing up in the 1970's. Actually I had never heard too much about her until I heard this classic Greatest Hits album and was spellbound from beginning to end. What a powerful and glorious voice, every song on this album sounds perfect coming out of her golden pipes. This CD doesn't have a bad song in it, they're all great ones. However, I do have four favorites that I play over and over everytime I listen to this amazing album. "Poetry Man", I believe it was her first big hit from her first album is a gem of a song. The music and the lyrics are very soulful and is just mesmerizing to listen to her sing this classic. "Don't Let Me Down", is a great song that was written by Lennon and McCartmey and she does a great cover and sounds just as good if not better than the original. "Shakey Ground" is one of my favorites I love this song. It jams with raw power from beginning to end and the electric guitar on this track is fantastic, I LOVE SHAKEY GROUND. "Every Night" another song written by Paul McCartney is a terrific song and a favorite of mine. I usually skip to this song first on the CD when I listen to it because I like it so much. This song is fantastic as is the entire CD. After listening to this great recording I went out and bought her first album "Phoebe Snow" which is also a great one to have. There is a song on that album that I feel should've been included on "The Very Best Of" CD which is "Either of Both". This is a really great song that I find highly compelling and a little nostalgic but that is in fact what is so great about the song. I find this artist to be highly underrated like a few of her contemporaries and is nothing to be ashamed of because the truly great performers usually are. I think this is a great album to have in any music collection. One album that should not go unnoticed. "The Very Best Of Phoebe Snow" is a classic album from a time when things were a lot slower and life was good and carefree. Yet this CD should be heard in any era. This album is (for me) pure soul, funk and pop and totally Phoebe Snow.

    5 out of 5 stars i love phoebe!.......2003-11-02

    5 out of 5 stars Awesome surprise.......2003-01-31

I'm new to the Phoebe Snow party, but I've got nothing but love and respect for everything I've heard from her so far. I picked this up on vinyl recently, not knowing anything about her or her music. I took it home and was absolutely blown away by what was coming through my speakers. I've got to say too, her version of Don't Let Me Down strikes me as the first Beatles cover that I like better than the original. Seriously. I can't really say enough about how blown away I was by her voice and her songs. I can't wait to dig deeper into her catalog.

5 out of 5 stars A gift from the unforgettable Phoebe Snow.......2002-03-30

Is there a singer alive who can sound more nakedly vulnerable and unprotected than Phoebe Snow? The supple, rippling vibrato she employs to such devastating effect sounds like nothing else in the musical world today.

On this, her first collection of greatest hits, Snow unfurls a heavenly soprano that reaches effortlessly for the ceiling without ever sounding harsh or shrieky. Just moments later, she'll dip down into the caramel undertones of her magnificent voice to come up with something rich and deliciously sensual.

This is a voice that invites you in and you find that you are powerless to say no. You can tell that there's power here, but Snow isn't a show-off--she chooses to hold something back just a little bit so that you're aware of the power of her voice the way you might be aware of, say, the strength of a sleeping lion. It's implicit and it's all the more intriguing because it's sheathed.

"Two-Fisted Love" is a gorgeous giving up--I love the guy, he's gone most of the time, I don't know what to do but keep loving him. Rarely has settling sounded so attractive. On Snow's justly famous "Poetry Man," the hypnotic guitar leads us into the song before Snow lazily releases her shimmering voice on a paeon to the joys of being verbally seduced:

    "You bashful boy
    You're hiding something sweet
Please give it to me, yeah, to me,
Talk to me some more . . .
    You are a genie
    All I ask for is your smile . . . "

This is a first-rate collection from a singer we hear all too little from these days. Get this woman out of singing ads and back to crafting the gorgeous songs we know she has in her!

5 out of 5 stars I LOVED HARPO'S BLUES SO MUCH, I WROTE IT INTO MY BOOK!.......2000-10-09

I am the author of "Butterscotch Blues", a book that came out in June of 2000.

The original title was called "Harpo's Blues" after the wonderful Phoebe Snow song. Unfortunately my editor didn't share my vision and it was changed to "Butterscotch Blues".

"Harpo's Blues" is pertinent to the story. Reference is made all throughout the book. It became the lead character's 'song', my chance as an author to page homage to the greatness of Phoebe.

Phoebe Snow is an original. There were none like her before her and there will be none like her after. Pick up this ablum and experience it for yourself...

    3 out of 5 stars I can complain just a little.......2001-11-02

As much as I love Phoebe Snow's voice (and song writing and guitar playing) she just seems to be trying to do too much on this record. One moment its solid pop such as the duet with Michael McDonald (Right to the end) and the next its labored blues such as Rockin Pneumonia and the Boogie Woogie Flu. Please! The real low point for me though is the speeded up take on Mitchell's Case of You. Diana Krall nailed this song on the TNT tribute to Mitchell but Snow's version is lame, lame.

All in all, one of those records that a fan has to have but disappointing when you know the next one is going to be such a long time coming

I wished this CD were all Blues but it is great anyway. Baby Work Out has you workin' out & Rockin' Pneumonia is the best. This CD can make the hair stand up on the back of your head if ya know what I mean. I play it all the time on Blue Wave Radio KECG 88.1 / 97.7 Sat 7 to 9 am & Single's Cafe Sun 5 to 6 pm in the East Bay CA. G Hanes Where It's Red Hot & Resophonic Blue.

    3 out of 5 stars I won't complain, but I'm still not satisfied........1999-03-18

Phoebe Snow is, without a doubt, one of the most uniquely and exquisitely gifted vocal performers of this era. Why is it, then, that so many of her recorded efforts seem to miss the mark? For the past two decades, each time there has been news of a new Phoebe Snow recording, I have eagerly waited the release. And each time I have been disappointed. This latest recording is no exception. Her selection of material on this latest release is sound, yet for as good as she is, she could be so much better. She drags the listener through "Piece of My Heart," delivers a warbled version of "Never Never Land" that sounds off-key at times, and seems to lose her way on "Brand New Me." "Right to the End," with Michael McDonald, is strong, though it is also moves slowly.

Phoebe Snow's voice is difficult to harness in the studio, although "Love Makes a Woman," "The Married Men," and "Shakey Ground," all from previous recordings, are memorable. Nothing on this CD, however, quite lives up to her capabilities.

Long-time Phoebe Snow fans should try to find the CD on which she delivers a powerfully moving rendition of "At Last" (recorded live ), which she dedicates to her daughter, Valerie. Hint: it's on a compilation CD, not her own.
