Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars a very good buy ................................2004-02-02

A pretty impressive album and the use of the word "Diva" is aptly used here with maybe the exception of Toni Braxton (who is a great singer) but has she had the longevity to justify a Diva title? of course an Ultimate Divas II might address the omission of Celine Dion,Cher and as a personal note i would like to have seen Nina Simone's "My baby dont care" as a footnote Artetha Franklyn performing "Nessun Dorma" was/is incredible and a nice ending treat.

5 out of 5 stars From Billie, Lena and Judy to Patti, Whitney and Aretha.......2003-07-24

Clearly there are two standards for evaluating a hits collection such as "Ultimate Divas," which proclaims that it has assembled the greatest female vocalists of our time (The first caveat is that you have to have been around for about a half-century for Billie Holiday, Lena Horne, and Judy Garland to be a part of "our" time). The first and most important standard is whether or not these are indeed the greatest female vocalists that you could put together on one album (the second caveat seems to be that the singers are of child bearing age as of 1999, since the wunderkind of the bunch is either Toni Braxton or Mary J. Blige, but I am not looking up dates of birth). This album starts with Billie Holiday and ends with Aretha Franklin, it has Lena, Horne, Sarah Vaughn and Ella Fitzgerald, you get Tina Turner and Diana Ross, there is Annie Lennox and Toni Braxton, and you have Patti LaBelle and Whitney Houston and that still leaves four more. Who is missing? Well, Barbra Streisand is the obvious voice choice for me; my kids would probably say Mariah Carey and if you are talking women of power there would be Madonna and Janet Jackson. But even if you do not think the talent level grades out at A+ it still has to be a solid A.

The other criteria is what the Divas sing on this album. Of the 17 Divas less than half are signing their signature tunes. Getting "yes" votes on the topic would be Billie Holiday's "My Man," Lena Horne's "Stormy Weather," Judy Garland's "Over the Rainbow," Tina Turner's "What's Love Got to Do With It," Annie Lennox's "Why," Diana Ross's "Touch Me In The Morning," and Toni Braxton's "Un-Break My Heart." This is not to dismiss the rest of the tracks. Ella Fitzerald's "Someone To Watch Over Me" is a personal favorite, and "I Have Nothing" shows off Whitney Houston's voice as well as anything. The rest are fine, but the treat for me is Aretha Franklin's "Nessun Dorma," which I remember from the 1998 Grammy Awards.

The Queen of Soul was already scheduled to sing one song and when Luciana Pavarotti bowed out at the last moment she not only agreed to sing another song in his place, she sang his song. If you have ever heard Pavarotti you have probably heard him do this tenor aria from Puccini's "Turandot" because it is his standard encore piece. I thought hearing Franklin do "I Had a Dream" from "Les Miserables" on the 1992 Inaugural show was a treat, but this was just awesome. I would have graded "Ultimate Divas" out at 4.5 overall but I have to round up just because you get this track. For everybody else my best advice is to pay attention to the first criteria and not the second. On this collection you probably have the songs you really like, so picking up this album is your opportunity to example your notion of Diva-ness. Give Britney, Christina and the rest of the youngsters and go for the finely aged voices from the past.

3 out of 5 stars What Is In A Diva?.......2003-05-24

Sometimes, various artists compilations seem to click in, once you feel that certain kind of rhythm. In the case of a diva, you have to let it touch you straight from the heart. With this case of divas collections, you must enjoy all of them, not a couple like I do. This Divas collection, is just another example of what should try to make up a various artists compliation, a good head, and a good knowledge of what a diva is.

With the various artists collection Ultimate Divas, is a sampler containing some of the biggest hit divas in the music industry. Although in my case, I would buy it, if I can find it. There are so many divas to really choose from, with some of their biggest songs, from Patti LaBelle's If Only You Knew, to Annie Lennox's classic ballad, Why. There are also some of the greatest movie ballads on there, including Whitney Houston's I Have Nothing from The Bodyguard, and the late Judy Garland classic, Somewhere Over The Rainbow.

Although this collection is nice as part of the clearance rack, there could be a second volume of this Divas collection in the works. There were so many overlooked divas that could've been added like Vanessa Williams, Mariah Carey, Natalie Cole, and even Anita Baker. Hopefully, Arista will put that into consideration.

2 out of 5 stars Disappointing Divas.......2002-12-19

Okay so many of the important women pop singers are represented but they aren't singing their best songs and it's a stretch to call some of these singers Ultimate anything. If you want ultimate, look for indivdual albums or the ultimate Diva record:
Lena Horne, Billy Holiday, Ella Fitzgerald and Sarah Vaughn, that's cooking.

4 out of 5 stars Nessun dorma ! Hair on fire........2001-09-06

Nessun dorma is a more than beautiful aria, but sung like gospel soul...? That was different. If you like gospel, you will love it. If you are an opera singer, you will run down the street screaming with your hair on fire!

This long-overdue collection shines a light on the lesser-known side of James Brown's musical empire: the ladies. And what ladies--seriously soulful songbirds like Lyn Collins ("The Female Preacher"), Vicki Anderson and Yvonne Fair, bawdy blues shouter Elsie Mae ("T.V. Mama"), and the unheralded Marva Whitney, who unleashes the hip-hop sample staple "Unwind Yourself." There are also two tracks from a young singer named Tammy Montgomery, who after leaving Brown's tutelage would sign with Motown and emerge as Tammi Terrell. From big hits like Collins's "Think (About It)" to obscure singles such as Elsie Mae's "Do You Really Want to Rescue Me, Part 1" (an answer to Fontella Bass's "Rescue Me"), this two-CD anthology is sheer R&B heaven and essential for fans of gritty, hip-shaking, finger-wagging, "You better think, boy" anthems. --Amy Linden

5 out of 5 stars SIMPLY AMAZING AT FIRST LISTEN.......2006-12-29

this one dives deep, now. everytime i hear this double cd, i think of two hip hop joints: IT'S MY THING by epmd and NO TIME by lil kim. the two songs they came.....................WAIT A MINUTE, IT TAKES TWO by rob base and dj easy rock of course!!!!! the THREE songs that these three classics came from plus kay robinson's funky version of THE LORD WILL MAKE A WAY SOMEHOW just does it for me. i love blowing dust off rare stuff, now. you like doing that too, check this one out.

5 out of 5 stars Roll Over Rover.......2005-07-16

This is the missing 4th volume to James Brown's legendary "JB's Funky People" series - although there are actually more tracks on this CD set than on all 3 Funky People albums combined, and many of the same female vocalists. The two CDs are roughly chronological, with disc one representing more of the 1950s and '60s bepob era, and disc two moving into the heavier '70s funk. Disc two is some of the funkiest music you will ever hear, and the tracks are taken from some incredibly hard to find albums: you'll really have to pay through the nose to track down playable copies of Vicki Anderson's "Message From A Soul Sister," or Lyn Collins's "Think (About It)." It's unfortunate that only early work from Yvonne Fair makes the collection, since tracks from her later LP "The Bitch Is Black" would fit right in with the other disc two material.

Of course, you have to pay through the nose for THIS album on Amazon, too. If you are not a collection fetishist, and just want the music, you can actually download the album for a lot cheaper through MSN Music or even the new commercial Napster (roughly $18-$20 at either of these). Sorry Amazon!

a part of the james brown legacy few explored, includes some of james best divas, liner notes include history on the divas, the jb's work their ...off, brown does some cameo's himself, tammi terrell sings i cried i love that she was best known as marvin gaye's duet partner, marva whitney, and the godfather show us how to funk on you don't work you can't eat i like this better than bobby byrd's version, the groove is funkier and maceo rips even though it's low you are still feeling this. vicki anderson comes in with message from the soul sisters love the piano ghetto right here, but supergood was vicki at her best bootsy kicks booty on the bass but catfish plays guitar like he heard funkadelic was in town, vicki, and husband booby byrd did a nice remake of you're welcome stop on by, lyn collins was on here with think about it one of the most sampled songs in history, listen to it and folks 25 and over will agree weith me, take me just as i am is the bomb maceo on sax took me to funkland, then we want to party i love how lyn sang that at the end, another sax solo by maceo, those are my favorite tracks on this double cd if you love james brown and want to hear how some of his best divas sounded this is for if you can't get enough of maceo parker, and fred wesley this is for you though i recommend the jb's horns, and the jb's doing it to death.

Wonderful selection of classic singers and songs. Special favorites are Ethel Merman and Barbara Cook.

5 out of 5 stars Love the choices.......2006-08-11

This is great. Anything with Ethel, Bernadette, Barbara (both of them), Mary, and Marin is beyond words. Any one of them by themselves is awesome but these ladies together are mind blowing. All of the women sound amazing but they made a mistake on the list of songs and composers. "Raise the Roof" sung by Julia Murney (I love her)was written by Andrew Lippa, not LaChusia.

2 out of 5 stars coulda been a contender.......2006-03-15

The divas are indeed divine, but the choice of music sung left me wondering why, with so many other great music selection contenders.

5 out of 5 stars Two words: Julia Murney.......2001-09-03

OK, so it sounds crazy to review an album with Ethel Merman and Bernadette Peters on it and not mention them. But...tough. I've read enough about them to know how good they are.

Buy this album as a token of love to the producer who had the cajones to put Julia Murney on an album celebrating the last 100 years of Broadway divas.

Because SHE is one of the greatest voices of the decade!

Montreal-based Ranee Lee has all the technical skills that you could want in a jazz singer--range, pitch, swing, flexibility--and they're combined with a sense of a lyric's nuances and an ability to project sorrows and joys with vitality. This CD consists of selections from Dark Divas, Lee's one-woman musical in which she re-creates the characters and songs of some of the great voices of the African American vocal tradition, bringing her abundant talent to bear on material associated with singers from Josephine Baker to Sarah Vaughan. Lee alters her timbre to recreate the flavor of those voices, but she never descends into mere imitation or parody, instead invoking a sense of each singer within her own voice, be it Pearl Bailey's brash humor or Billie Holiday's emotional depth. She's at her best with those singers who have most strongly influenced her own style, invoking Dinah Washington's spirit for "Makin' Whoopee" and Vaughan's ethereal musicality on "If You Could See Me Now." The settings are consistently well done, with Rick Wilkins's arrangements effectively framing Lee's performances and evoking different eras, while guitarist Richard Ring and trombonist Muhammed Abdul Al-Khabyyr stand out among the band members. It's a project few contemporary singers could undertake, and fewer still might succeed in, but Lee fares very well. --Stuart Broomer

I can't stop listening to this CD and I play it in my car when tooling around the beach communities in FL. Her rendition of Fine and Mellow, describes this CD perfectly! It makes living worthwhile to hear this kind of quality in a voice such as Miss Lee's. Buy it if you love the good life! Listen to Honeysuckle Rose and you'll lose your petals, believe me.

Talk about scope! The whole world and half its population fall under the graces of Global Divas. In fact, the only criteria for inclusion in this bargain-priced three-disc set are gender and quality. Women from more than 30 nations are represented in the 41 selections, which date back as far as 1926 (tragic Mexican ranchera thrush Lucha Reyes's "Caminito de Contreras). Imagine trying to sum up American songstresses with three selections (here you get Aretha Franklin, Patsy Cline and Marian Anderson-unassailable, but hardly all-inclusive). The modest price of Global Divas and its embracing mission make this a worthwhile collection. If it doesn't send you off on an exploration of the oeuvres of some of these singers, you're just not listening close enough. --Steven Stolder

      5 out of 5 stars Unbeatable.......2000-10-04

I bought this collection a few years ago, being interested in female vocalists of the world. I fell in love with this 3-CD set immediately, and I actually went out and bought several more copies to give as gifts because it is truly that amazing. The diverse voices and musical styles represented are revelations! And despite the differences between music styles, the music fits together on each disc with such harmony. I was familiar with (and a fan of) some of the contributing artists before purchasing the set, so those artists' inclusion in this collection made me "trust" that this would be a superior collection overall. I was not disappointed. On the strength of the inclusion of Múzsikás, Kirsten Bråten-Berg, Värttinä, and Édith Piaf, I decided this was a must-have, and in listening to it, I discovered the amazing voices of many other artists. For example, Tiddas from Australia, Nasida Ria from Indonesia, Rósa Eskenázi from Greece, Fairuz, who is revered in her native Lebanon, Amália Rodrigues, the pre-eminent singer of Portuguese fado songs (Rodrigues passed away last year), and probably the most beautiful, haunting song on the collection by Ulali, comprised of three Native American women. Quite stunning.

This collection is so large and overwhelming that it is really hard to describe in words why you should invest your time and money. Simply put, if you have interest in women vocalists and world music, you would be wise to start here.

4 out of 5 stars Una buena seleccion...!!!.......1999-05-19

Saludos Horacio.

5 out of 5 stars ANOTHER STELLAR VOYAGE.......2000-10-04

Unfortunately the information provided in the description of this THREE CD set is not complete, including the track listing, so it would be difficult to get an idea of whether or not you wanted to purchase this collection. Personally, I would advise you to do so if you are interested in women vocalists and world music. This collection (and its predecessor Global Divas) is a gorgeous, perfect marriage of women's voices from all over the world. Unlike many other collections which serve as a "volume two" to some other collection, this does not suffer as a sophomore effort. In fact, the world is so vast and full of creative artists such as those featured here that we could probably be treated to many more similar collections without tapping the same material or artist more than once.

This collection seems to collect efforts from lesser known women artists worldwide, providing a huge array of diversity. The result is three CDs of depth and a showcase for emerging talents. With both this collection and the Global Divas collection I was introduced to some extremely outstanding talents (with whom I might otherwise have been unacquainted), and this inspired me to seek out their individual albums. In some cases, that proved difficult, but from this collection I was able to purchase quite a few gems which have enhanced my entire music collection.

Among the gems here (although it is misleading to single anyone out because every single contribution to this collection is superb) are: French pop chanteuse Francoise Hardy with her unforgettable "Comment Te Dire Adieu?", Tex-Mex folk style singer Tish Hinojosa with the moving "Déjame Llorar", Italy's Alessandra Belloni with "Canto di Hecate", the very typically Balkan "Your Scarf Will Not Hold Your Hair" from Zana Leskaj and Luljeta Ilia (which is wonderful but will take some getting used to for those not familiar with Balkan music), the mystical and mysterious sounds of "Jheel Mai Chand" from Najma, the enchanting voice of American Alison Krauss (who is in fact well known in the U.S. but heretofore unknown by me, not being a country fan. But Alison transcends this label with this heartbreaking rendition of "Baby, Now That I've Found You"), and some other beautiful songs on the third CD from Judy Frankel, Saozinha from Cape Verde, Éva Molnár from Hungary, and Emma junaro from Bolivia. The real standout among all the CDs in this collection-- entirely unique-- is a singer called Marina with a song called "Illoqarfik". Marina is apparently the most popular singer in GREENLAND, and she lives and works in her native northern Greenland.

This is another crowning achievement, and I highly recommend this collection!

      5 out of 5 stars Divas Exotica.......2005-09-03

I love this album. So different and alternative. It is very amusing, uplifting and you can dance and sing to all the songs. Very seductive too if you are in the right mood.

5 out of 5 stars An excellent compilation album!.......2001-02-25

My son and I ADORE this delightful album. We commute 40 miles each day, and this album always puts us in such a great mood. We sing to every song! Nina Simone's "Feelin' Good" (bonus song) is SO amazing I had to go buy one of her albums.

The ONLY song I sometimes skip is the first one, Ann-Margret's "Let Me Entertain You". It's not bad...just...boring. As for the other songs, some have good arrangements and are sung by REAL singers. Others aren't so good, but they're silly and fun and you just have to love the effort.

This album is not for everyone. Your best bet is to listen to the samples. Believe me, if it's for you, you'll know right away.

      1 out of 5 stars Don't Touch These Tomatoes!.......2000-01-23

I bought this CD after reading about it in a popular "lifestyle" magazine. Gawd, was I disappointed. I won't demolish the collection song by song. Just trust me when I say this is a six- martini adventure. I listened to it well-oiled, and it was still unbearable. Listening to the cuts on this CD was like trying to survive a bad hangover. If you really want to enjoy what singers like Billy Holiday, Eartha Kitt, and Shirley Bassey have to offer, invest in works that individually showcase their talents. As for the rest of the cuts, "unendurable" is not the word. Sure, you may get a few giggles out of them. But the people who put this miserable compilation together deserve the biggest laugh of all.

      5 out of 5 stars Divas Deeeeelightful!.......1999-12-13

Slip into your crested slippers, call some friends, and put on "Divas Exotica" -- this good-time CD will put some swizzle in your stick! In my opinion, it has set the new standard for luxe lounge sound. Absolute gems are Ann-Margaret's "Let Me Entertain You," Josephine Baker's "Don't Touch Me Tomatoes," and Eartha Kitt's purrrrfect "Let's Misbehave." That track is THE definitive nightclub number -- you can just see Eartha slinking around the stage. Marilyn Monroe's "Heatwave" will have you wiggling all over the house and Nina Simone's Adam-and-Eve fable is the coolest little ditty I've heard in years. "Divas Exotica" is just too much fun -- these babes give new meaning to the term "cocktail shakers!"

4 out of 5 stars This will make you laugh!.......1999-04-07

Okay, some of the performances are just plain unendurable (like Eartha Kitt's unbelievably slow "Let's Misbehave", or Marlene Dietrich's "Near You.") but most are clever and cute, especially Bridget Bardot's "Je me donne a qu'il me plait," and some are GREAT little treasures I can't pass up (I love Maya Angelou's "Since me man done gone and went", and "Forbidden Fruit"). If you can sift through the really awful dreck, generally the performances are funny, sexy, and entertaining. It definitely makes me feel exotic!
