Amazon.com Essential Recording
Wish You Were Here is a song cycle dedicated to Pink Floyd's original frontman, Syd Barrett, who'd flamed out years before: two grimly funny songs about the evils of the music business ("By the way, which one's Pink?"), and two long, touching ones about the band's vanished friend. The real star of the show, though, is the production: sparkling, convoluted, designed to sound deeply oh-wow under the influence--and pretty great sober too--with David Gilmour getting lots of space for his most lyrical guitar playing ever. And, though the album is big and ambitious, even bombastic, it somehow dodges being pretentious--the Barrett tributes are honest and heartfelt, beneath all the grand gestures and stereophonic trickery. --Douglas Wolk
Customer Reviews:
One of the many reasons I love Pink Floyd.......2007-06-13
For Pink Floyd, making a follow up album to 'Dark Side of the Moon' must have seemed an extremely daunting task. However with 'Wish You Were Here' they succeeded admirably. In his biography of the band, Nick Mason stated that they wanted to avoid simply making a sequel to the hugely successful predecessor and that they wanted to start afresh in a new musical direction. This decision resulted in a creation of true musical beauty.
The long, ambling and elegant opening track 'Shine On You Crazy Diamond' was a new step even for Floyd. Both parts of this track have a relaxed yet compelling beauty that puts it right up there with the best the band has produced.
After the ethereal beauty of the opening track, the following two bring a far more sombre mood to proceedings. 'Welcome to the Machine' is a disgruntled sideswipe at the human condition which is somewhat reminiscent in lyrical content, of the track 'Time' on 'Dark Side of the Moon'. Hot on the heels of this is 'Have A Cigar', a pessimistic jibe at the music industry creeps that came out of the woodwork after their sudden shot to international success. Although these two tracks are far more downbeat, they are executed with a Floydian bite that makes them quality tracks.
Along with 'The Wall' and 'Dark Side of the Moon', this was one of the albums that defined Floyd and simply demands to be listened to.
Worthwhile.......2007-06-10
This is a good, but not a great album. Welcome to the Machine, Wish You Were Here, and Have a Cigar are all classic cuts and never get old. The Syd Barrett tribute songs Shine on You Crazy Diamond are a little weaker. Over all it's worth a tumble, but it's no Dark Side Of The Moon.
An Absolute Must.......2007-05-29
Probably the best Floyd CD. I had an earlier (non-digitally remastered) version of this album and found that this version is really a treat in comparison. As far as the music itself, every track is a classic and a must for any classic rock fan. If you don't own a good version this album, you need look no further.
Wish it was a little less drab.......2007-05-27
So Pink Floyd's "Wish You Were Here" is probably considered their third greatest album in the normal consensus behind Dark Side and The Wall. It's not "Animals" and "Obscured by Clouds" are better than this album but this one is still a fine one despite being only five songs long.
This one starts out with a classic of a song in Shine On You Crazy Diamond. Beautiful, epic, pick your favorite cliche and use it here because this song has it all, even a saxophone solo at the end. It is later reprised at the end of the album this the first one is far superior. This song along with Wish You Were Here were written for former frontman Syd Barrett who even visited them in the studio during the recording, small world isn't it. Speaking of the title track it is an amazing song. But one thing it does that I love is that it is simple. Accoustic guitar with some great lyrics provides a nice sendoff to Mr. Barrett.
The one problem this album has is the two music industry rants from Roger Waters. "Welcome to the Machine" is atrocious and overlong. "Have A Cigar" is better but it's not even sung by a member of Pink Floyd.
Other than the rants this is a fine album. And for once a Pink Floyd album that seems to express hope, nostalgia and something more than just being depressed which is always a nice change of pace.
Wish I Had Discovered Sooner.......2007-05-27
Wish You Were Here is equally as superb as Dark Side of the Moon and serves as a sequel with an emotional feel and blues-based, melodic background centered by outstanding guitars. The use of sound effects that the band incorporated two years prior are as involved again and help to enhance the mood and vibrational feel of the music. With having to fulfill mammoth expectations in 1975 after an phenomenal album like Dark Side of the Moon, Pink Floyd only broadened their musical horizons but played with the same passion to create another album that offers proof as to why they were, and still are, so highly regarded as innovators in rock music.

Album Description
It's the harmonies that draw you in. The big, lush, gorgeous harmonies. You're hooked and it's then that you realize that it's not just the harmonies. Everything about Little Big Town is unique to the country music world. Comprised of Karen Fairchild, Kimberly Roads, Jimi Westbrook and Phillip Sweet, Little Big Town's configuration of two men and two women is unique. Also unique is that there is no single lead vocalist all four take on lead vocal responsibilities. Little Big Town's voices blend so effortlessly one would think they'd been singing together since childhood. While that isn't quite true, their backgrounds are strikingly similar. All four band members began singing in church and with their families and Phillip even performed in a family band. Each then blossomed in their craft during college, a career as a professional musician the clear path for each. Equity. 2005.
Customer Reviews:
Great Musicianship and Awesome Vocals!!!!.......2007-06-19
This album is a real gem! I first was exposed to this group through watching them do "Good As Gone" on Nashville Star last season. Prior reviews which criticize their similarity to Fleetwood Mac are really unfair to both LBT and Fleetwood Mac. Yes, they were definitely influenced by Fleetwood Mac, but they are extremely talented in their own right! The vocal talent and musicianship is first rate!
My one criticism (which is minor) involves a certain similarity of the first three songs on the album. In other words, there is a very similar vibe in a number of songs such as Good As Gone, Boondocks, and Bones...(Tryin' to Find A Reason - also similar vibe - is later in the album song order).
There is some great guitar work which includes some very impressive Dobro work from Jerry Douglas. This album is definitely worth getting!
Hillbilly Gold.......2007-05-21
Like Ray Charles used to say, "Country music artist tell great stories." I'm slowly becoming more of a contemporary country fan. And I stress; contemporary. The first time I heard 'Bring it on Home, I thought, "I kind of like that song." A good friend let me listen to the CD and I was hooked. 'The Road to Here,' is a fun piece of work; welcome to the family!
It's all good visiting Little Big Town.......2007-05-15
Okay, so I'm totally re-writing & re-submitting my rating of this album. I went to a "Little Big Town" Concert and was blown away. They were incredible and I own them a huge apology for only giving them three stars the first time around. The harmonies were amazing...so, I've gone back and listened to the album & deemed myself delerious in relation to my first review. The four singers are perfectly balanced and the songs are fun. No wonder they won big Country Music Awards for this album. So, ignore my first rating and buy the album.
love it.......2007-05-14
Great CD! And they are just as good live in concert! I recommend it. Balance between slow songs and upbeat songs.
Great music for a non-country fan!.......2007-05-09
I purchased this CD because I heard some of their songs on TV while browsing through channels. Although considered a country group, their music has a Fleetwood Mac sound to it. I never thought I'd purchase a country CD, but Little Big Town has changed my mind about the genre. Great harmony and great musicians!

Contrary to what Garth Brooks once sang, it never hurts to have friends in high places. Though Joshua Radin is sure to have found his way without them, it can't have done much harm to have gone to college with actor/director Zach Braff and singer/songwriter Cary Brothers, two of his more supportive schoolmates. The connections led to several appearances on Scrubs (starting with the Brothers-produced "Winter"), then on Grey's Anatomy ("These Photographs"), followed by a record deal with Columbia. On his major label debut, Radin evokes the sensitive folkies of the AM era--Paul Simon, James Taylor, and Cat Stevens--as much as the alternative radio variant offered up by Elliot Smith in the 1990s. We Were Here, which follows indie EP First Between 3rd and 4th, is subtle stuff distinguished by vocals that are as much whisper as soft-spoken lullaby. Heck, "Everything'll Be Alright" is even subtitled "Will's Lullaby." (The now LA-based Radin claims that his quiet style stems from writing songs that would keep a rather volume-sensitive New York neighbor at bay.) Overall, the cello-laden disc feels more familiar than original, but makes for a soothing listen, and de-synthesized Yaz cover "Only You" (penned by future Erasure member Vince Clarke) is a charming addition. --Kathleen C. Fennessy

Glad I discovered Joshua Radin!.......2007-07-06
LUV this CD! I first heard Joshua Radin singing "What If You" on "Catch & Release Soundtrack" AND HAD TO hear "more of Joshua Radin"! I luv all of his songs on this CD but "What If You" is still my favorite! Enjoy so-ooo much listening to his beautiful soft voice singing mellow lyrics & hearing cello chords in background! Tonight I'm going to have a glass of wine while listening to Joshua Radin's beautiful melancholy love songs!! Listen to the samples & see if Joshua Radin is "for you" also.
Awesome.......2007-06-26
You have to like a mellow rock to like this CD. I was able to put it in the player and never felt like I had to skip a song. (come on you all have done it) This CD there was no "hated song". A great buy!
Hidden gem.......2007-05-23
A hidden gem filled with sentimental lullabies and heartful songs that evoke love and love lost. Priscilla Hartranft's vocals mix well with Radin's and make for sweet music. Must listen to Sundrenched World, star mile, closer, and winter.
Why isn't this guy famous?.......2007-05-18
I heard "Winter" from this album and was hooked: though I'm not really a fan of Zach Braff's acting/movies, the man has incredible taste in music (as the Garden State soundtrack proves). Part of me is glad Joshua Radin isn't yet commercialized, but notice I write, "yet." Seeing the huge similarities between Radin and, say, the Shins, John Mayer or Iron and Wine I'm just waiting for the day for when Radin is played outside of JC Penny commercials.
Anyone who likes some soft accoustic and wistful vocals should at least listen to the sample songs on Amazon. "Sundrenched World" is another beautiful song with haunting cello lines and gorgeous chords. Even some of his lighter songs like "Photographs" are far from fluff-- any artist who can also write lyrics about Simone DeBeauvoir or Sylvia Plath is just awesome.
a review of Joshua Radin's We Were Here.......2007-05-15
I think Joshua Radin's We Were Here is a great album to buy. It is one that I can put in and listen to from start to finish without having to skip any songs. I would suggest it to anyone who likes Iron and Wine, Denison Witmer, Damien Rice, The Shins, Simon and Garfunkel, Teitur Lassen, etc etc. I look forward to purchasing more of his music in the future.

No stranger to the realm of children's records, They Might Be Giants have seen success with their CD No! and the book-and-CD combo Bed, Bed, Bed. Their latest CD, Here Come the ABCs, offers up 25 alphabetically themed songs. However, as is their charming way, the two Johns (Flansburgh and Linnell), use the letters as merely the connective tissue, allowing them to pursuit intriguing flights of fancy that consider everything from the relative power of letters and sounds to animal hijinks. Just as they've always done, there are wistful ballads and high octane rockers. TMBG have always been a family-friendly band, and this disc works just fine for adult fans, who can rightfully consider this simply their newest release. --David Greenberger
Customer Reviews:
Fun for Kids and their Grown-ups!.......2007-06-10
I bought "Here Come the ABC's" for a friend for her birthday after she watched it with my son. She adores the set. They Might Be Giants performs wonderfully catchy songs that are both easy to remember and challenge thinking. My son, who is 2, enjoys the puppets and the vivid and sometimes strange animation sequences. Favorite songs in our household include "Alphabet of Nations" (me), "E Eats Everything" (my son), and "Alphabet Lost and Found" (my husband). This set is one that I would recommend to anyone who interacts with young children learning to play with language. It grabs their attention, and they don't mind at all.
My daughter loves it!!!!.......2007-05-30
At least once a day my daughter asks to watch the video. I don't mind because the songs are fun, origional, and educational. I find myself singing along!
my little one loves this DVD!.......2007-05-04
My son has been watching this DVD since he was about 9 months old. He is over a year old now and loves it even more than when we first got it. Its also the only dvd he has that i don't get sick of watching over and over. I can't wait for here come the 123's
We both love it.......2007-04-18
FYI, it is a very loud DVD so do not have the volume up too loud. My 2-year-old and I both love this DVD. He sings the songs and is learning to recognize his ABC's. What a fun way to learn. We use the CD in the car and when he is in the bathtub with his floating letters. He is learning to go to the "QU" letters when he hears them in the song. Great Job!
Fun for kids and adults.......2007-04-15
I purchased this CD/DVD combo based on a recommendation in Family Fun Magazine. I have not been disappointed! It is full of catchy songs that my whole family enjoys. This is not another mind-numbing kids CD. Both my husband and I find ourselves singing along with our sons when we play this CD in the van. Well done!

Australian-born Keith Urban, hot off the double-platinum success of his 2002 sophomore album, Golden Road, is kind of like contemporary country's Tom Cruise. The kid is just so unjustly talented, likeable, and good-looking that it's hard not to hate him. But such jealousy is apt to melt into begrudging admiration and affection after a quick listen to this third album. True, some of Urban's self-penned adolescent love laments and bright-eyed paeans to life in the slow lane do sound a bit callow and derivative. But, with his resolute tenor and his dazzling lead guitar work, he breathes real pain and passion into moving confessionals like Matraca Berg's "Nobody Drinks Alone," "Tonight I Wanna Cry" (a heart-rending ballad co-written by Urban), and a gentle Rodney Crowell gem called "Memories of Us." --Bob Allen

One of my favorite cds!.......2007-06-09
I got this cd just a couple of weeks ago, my first Keith Urban album and I love it! I already knew several of the songs, Days Go By, Better Half, Better Life, Making Memories Of Us, Tonight I Want to Cry, etc.
I already loved those, but the rest of the album is great too! The Hard Way, Shes Gotta Be, etc. It's a great album and I defintely recommend it!
Classic Country Rock.......2007-05-03
I love country and I love rock, so this CD meets my standards. I think Keith is a great singer and musician (guitar and piano). What a talent!
very happy with my purchase!.......2007-04-11
Perfect condition and fast arrival. Love this cd so much! Thank you!!
Best country artist out there.......2007-03-17
Keith Urban is such a talented artist. He conveys such emotion unlike alot of other country artists. His guitar solos are unparalleled and his optomistic view of life is refreshing, his break-up songs heart rending.I love the universal lyrics and screaming guitar solos that make him famous. This album in particular has alot of great songs.
Days Go By-a refreshing, upbeat song about living life now and not missing it.One of his best.
Better Life-my favorite of his.About him and his significant other finding better life and times in the future.Keeps its momentum throughout the whole song and he just goes all out.
Making Memories of Us-a nice soft song with really sweet lyrics.
God's Been Good to Me-Keith wrote this basically as a testimony of how God's blessings on him, which is especially special because of his past.
The Hard Way-takes a look at a relationship that's not working out,but nobody's walking away.I love the chorus. It's so sweet.
You're My Better Half-a catchy, upbeat song about the support and love he gets from his significant other.
I Could Fly-a "thank you" song to his love for making him feel alive.Interesting accompaniment.
Tonight I Wanna Cry-who hasn't heard this song?Heart breaking with the gorgeous piano and strings accompanying Keith's mellow voice.
She's Gotta Be-this is like a self beatdown for giving up this girl.I wasn't too impressed.
Nobody Drinks Alone-in (as far as I'm concerned)Keith's best guitar performance,he explains the empty feeling and guilt that comes with drinking.
Country Comfort-a song about home-grown country life. This was the only one in this album that I actually didn't like. The verses are pathetic.
Live to Love Another Day-an unusual breakup song in that it focuses on the positive-life goes on.
These Are the Days-basically a reprise of Days Go By.Starts off softly with profound and heart-felt statements about living life(The highest of flames becomes an ember)and gradually crescendos into Days Go By.

From Here We Go Sublime.......2007-06-07
The Field mastermind Axel Willner came seemingly out of nowhere to do the impossible: up the profile of the already do-no-wrong Kompakt Records and keep the label's sound intact while giving it the twist nobody wanted to admit that it needed. In the same vein as (and on par with) Luomo's Vocalcity, From Here We Go Sublime could go down in history as the album that makes minimal techno accessible, without the need to add vocals or pander to a lower common denominator. But while Sublime is far from "stupid music," it's a refreshingly simple and aerated take on textural techno at a time when too many electronic musicians trip over their own mixer cords, and it thrives on thrust and clarity rather than on strained beauty. Pop music has always been about taking a few key ingredients and flying them to the moon. By looping only crucial elements--sometimes from his own machines and sometimes from others' (who knew that bits of '80s adult-contempo cheese could sound so wondrous?)--over basic kickdrums that highlight what's really important (the melodies), Willner has reflected the joy of pop on a record that doesn't sound like it's trying to win the gold medal, but unbelievably, undeniably does.
For once, believe the hype.......2007-05-16
The music press has gotten into a phase in which it seems like every single critic showers a band/artist/genre with accolades galore only to see them "lose it" an album or two later (anyone remember the VU-inspired garage band revival of a few years ago?).
This album is the best-reviewed album of 2007. This says alot about the music press and the music world in general...it is rare/nonexistent to see an album from the still rather obscure (I use that word lightly) genre of ambient techno be rated "best album of the year".
As for the album itself, do believe the hype. This album is both listenable and interesting when it comes to hearing what The Field (Axel Willner) can do with the deceptively simpleton beats and bleeps. The album is trance-inducing and well worth your attention.
simple or subtle?.......2007-05-05
Hate to admit that I'm one of those just a little baffled by the wondrous reviews this disc has received. It consists of the steady, and rather conservative, rhythms that are used in creating the foundation for basic club music. Nothing more. It is hilarious when one track rapidly fades out just as a guitar starts to be introduced into the mix. If this stuff was public domain, it would be perfect for someone to use for home recording along with whatever lead instruments or vocals they might want to add. But on its own it takes shoe-gazing to a level of serious introversion. I don't know.
Stunning minimal dance debut.......2007-04-16
As I mentioned recently in a review for Gui Boratto's Chromophobia album, it's sometimes difficult to distinguish the exact reasons why one minimal electronic release is better than another one, due to similarities in production and overall sound. Of course, in the end it usually comes down largely to personal perceptions that can't be explained, but other defining characteristics (because of the constructs of the music itself) are nearly always very, very subtle in and of themselves.
From Here We Go Sublime is yet another release on the Kompakt label that is nonetheless completely stunning, and for reasons mentioned above, it's difficult to explain why. The debut release from Sweden's Axel Willner, it drifts somewhere between minimal dance music and repetitive ambience, with beats that clomp along fast enough to fuel movement, but with enough ethereal qualities that you could simply put it on and trip out on the couch with it easily enough as well. Essentially, it's trance music of the highest quality, veering completely leftward of the cheeseball Global Underground crowd, and falling somewhere between the work of Kaito (also on the Kompakt label) and Wolfgang Voigt (aka Gas).
Willner actually has a few things in common with micro-sample sculptor Akufen, but instead of trying to wow you with his cutting ability and a frantic hand, he has pulled out hundreds of little heavily melodic snippets and stutters and scatters them across gorgeous expanses, building tracks slowly and letting them peak subtlety. The release opens with "Over The Ice," a single that was released last year to great acclaim, and for good reason. The piece is a perfect introduction to his sound, with micro samples of vocals that flutter over a relentless 4/4 thump, building basslines, and all kinds of subtle spacial effects.
With ten songs running nearly exactly an hour in length, it's also a remarkably consistent release. "Good Things End" is constructed as many other tracks on the release, with jittery vocals samples over a rambling, rolling beat and some sudden bursts of tweaked noise. Even though the aforementioned "Over The Ice" got his foot in the door, there are actually a slew of tracks on From Here We Go Sublime that are even better. "Everday" is a perfect example, again building with spiraling upward beats and slippery programming while bright, overlapping vocal samples push things higher and higher until the stunning ending.
At ten minutes "The Deal" is the longest track on the album, but doesn't feel a bit weary as it pushes forward with devastating low-end bass and sprays of overdriven noise. It's the closest thing to Gas (who was supposedly one of his biggest musical inspirations) on the release, and manages to sound both hazy and clear as day at the same time. An outstanding debut, From Here We Go Sublime is yet another excellent album from the Kompakt this label and a release that has gotten some of the most play of anything I've heard this year. If you like minimal electronic music at all, you must seek it out.

Although it's based on the 1967 movie of the same name, Thoroughly Modern Millie is almost thoroughly new. Composer Jeanine Tesori (Violet) and lyricist Dick Scanlan wrote a whole batch of songs, while retaining a couple from the movie--including the Jimmy van Heusen-Sammy Cahn title tune--and recycling even older material (look for Victor Herbert's "I'm Falling in Love with Someone" and the inventively arranged "Nuttycracker Suite"). Miraculously, the show, set during the jazz age, doesn't feel stitched together, and Tesori does a great job cranking out swinging melodies. Sutton Foster is appropriately brassy as Millie, but she can also tone it down, as in the beginning of "Gimme Gimme" (of course, she then proceeds to project up to the last rafters as the song builds to its climax). Harriet Harris, as nasty Mrs. Meers, steals the show with "They Don't Know." Close your eyes, listen to her, and you'll be back in Broadway's golden age. --Elisabeth Vincentelli

A must to add to your collection.......2007-05-18
I was very fortunate enough to see this on Broadway. It was one of the best shows I've ever seen! The music has just enough jazz and contemporary vive that any musical lover would enjoy! It's also got tapping in it! Sutton is simply awesome in this role and all of the cast can really belt out their songs. Harriet Harris is phenominal in her role as Mrs. Meers. I highly recommend this to all broadway lovers! It's one to add to your collection!
Delightful.......2006-06-12
The music takes a little bit to grow on you, but boy, does it! It's wonderful, charming, romantic, funny--just like the play itself. I loved almost every song and I was really impressed with "Long As I'm Here With You"-- I thought it was an old song written back in the twenties, because it so sounded like one. The cast is absolutely energetic and endearing, and Sutton Foster just *rocks*. Definitely worth the money.
YOU WILL LOVE IT.......2006-02-17
If you like musicals, you will NOT REGRET purchasing this musical soundtrack. JUST DO IT. It's so great, you will be listening to it forever. I also saw the show at the Kennedy Center in D.C. and it's one of the best I've ever seen. (And I've seen A LOT.)
Have Fun!
Stellar cast in a first rate musical.......2006-01-29
A sparkling Broadway lead debut from Sutton Foster (run, don't walk to any live performances given by Ms. Sutton) with superb comedic support given by Mark Kudisch and Harriet Harris (who won the Tony Award for this performance)
Thoroughly Modern Millie.......2006-01-27
Truth be told it took me a while to warm up to this cast Album beacuse at first listen it is dull, bland , and completly boring.
But after a few listens I really got into it althought there are still problems and I only like a few songs I don't completly detest it like I did the first time I heard it.
The songs I enjoy are:
Not For The Life of Me
Thoroughly Modern Millie
They Don't Know
The Speed Test
What Do I need With Love
Forget About the Boy
Long As I'm here With You
The problem with Millie is that the slow songs are boring or from another show which is annoying. it seems the the people who wrote the music and lyrics for this show only used their talent on the up-beat songs but slacked on the slow ballads.
Buy this album only if you are a super Broadway fan like me , other-wise you will probably be dissapointed.

Highlight versions of cast recordings are by definition a compromise, and this reduction of Andrew Lloyd Webber's Phantom of the Opera is no exception. Weighing in at 59 minutes, it's over 40 minutes shorter than the two-disc version, excising many musical scenes that convey the flow and impact of the show (which include, admittedly, a lot of patter and screaming). On the other hand, all the hits are here--"Think of Me," "Angel of Music," the title tune, "The Music of the Night," "All I Ask of You," "Masquerade," and "Wishing You Were Somehow Here Again"--and Michael Crawford and Sarah Brightman are still on hand to make their distinctive contributions to the original London cast. So if you're looking for a convenient, inexpensive single disc that will let you enjoy Lloyd Webber's scrumptious melodies without having to immerse yourself in the action, this just might be for you. --David Horiuchi

Music of the Night????????.......2007-02-28
I really liked the idea of a highlights cd; however, The Music of the Night is not the same one that is on the original two-disc cd. The words aren't even the same. If you enjoy Music of the Night, skip this cd. Otherwise, this cd would be 5 stars.
Great short version!.......2006-12-06
If you only want to hear the songs from this musical, this one is for you. But if you want the full version, get the 4-disc version. I listen to this version in my car when I'm on the road, but I listen to the 4-disc version at home. Both versions are worth the purchase.
A long time favorite.......2006-08-26
This is one of my most treasured CDs. The voices of the cast are incredible! "Think of Me" and "All I Ask of You" are 2 of my favorites. If you enjoy the story behind Phantom, yu will like this soundtrack.
The Best Recording of this Show Available.......2006-04-21
I think that this is the best PHANTOM soundtrack out there:
1)It has the original Broadway cast, the best.
2)It cuts out the more risqu? parts of the show (believe me, there are some), making it "appropriate for the whole family."
3)The entire CD is on one disc, so you can go through the show w/o switching discs.
4)The only song that the movie soundtrack has on it that this doesn't is "Learn to Be Lonely," which appears in the credits, and isn't really a great song anyways.
Great CD.......2006-03-14
I bought this CD as a birthday gift for my boyfriend. We had misplaced the one that we had and needed a new one. This is one of our favorite cd's. Such beautiful music.

To be clear: America hasn't flooded the market with another best-of album. Instead, two of the founding members, Gerry Beckley and Dewey Bunnell, were rescued from classic rock purgatory by the Smashing Pumpkins' James Iha and Fountains of Wayne's Adam Schlesinger with an offer from the younger musicians to act as producers on an album of new material. The respect that Iha and Schlesinger have shown for America's talents is touching, drawing the best out of the band's close harmonies and gentle folk rock sound. Over the decades, Beckley and Bunnell have lost none of their vocal compatibility or their guitar acumen. If anything, they're much better players in 2007 than they were when they first rode into pop music history on their "Horse with No Name." Here & Now is further enhanced by guests like Ryan Adams (on "Ride On"), as well as Ben Kweller pairing up with My Morning Jacket members Jim James and Patrick Hallahan for a cover of Jacket's "Golden." Meanwhile, Nada Surf members play back up on a heart-stopping version of their own "Always Love." Also included is a live disc recorded in 2005, which finds America covering their chart-topping hits with a deft, subtle hand, reminding us that this group could hold its own with Crosby, Stills, Nash & Young, the Eagles, and other early '70s contemporaries. --Jaan Uhelszki

Anemic.......2007-06-08
You got to hand it to these guys for their persistance. I saw them in concert last year - A++++ really a good show, very professional. Unlike the concert, the new music is anemic. I listened to the CD over and over and the songs seem to belend in together - nothing stands out. Maybe they need to get Dan Peek to help write some songs, the magic was the 3 of them.
A Surprising Great Collection of Songs!.......2007-05-30
This is a two CD release - one contains all their old hits from a live performance while the second contains a collection of new studio recorded songs. I can't say I care for the live recordings - the originals always sound better to me. However, the new songs are amazingly good! This is their best work to date (and I always felt their initial "America" album was ground-breaking for the incredible instrumentals woven into well written songs). It is great to see quality composers who get better with age instead of washed up as is too often the case. I cannot remember when I have been so impressed with a new album release - and I have been around for a while.
The Rise and Rise of America.......2007-05-27
At first I was tempted to title this review, "the Rise and Fall and Rise Again of America", but the fact is that America has never really fallen. Despite not have a hit record since the early 1980's, America (Dewey Bunnell and Gerry Beckley), has been performing 150 plus dates a year since they were formed in 1967. Although, original member, Dan Peek, hasn't been with them for years, Gerry and Dewey continue to sound as fresh today as when they first hit the charts with "Horse with No Name" in 1969. A sign that this CD is superb: I haven't stopped playing since I bought it in January.
The CD begins with the infectious tune, "Chasing The Rainbow" and ends with the beautiful, "Walk in the Woods". In between are splendid songs: "Always Love", the humorous "Look At Me Now", "Love and Leaving", "This Time" (whose lyrics almost predict the success of this "comeback" CD), "Work to Do", and the sweet, "All I Think About is You". I would only mildly criticize, "Ride On", which comes off as preachy.
I know some people will attribute "Here and Now's" success due to the production and influence of "hip" artists such as Adam Schlesinger, and James Iha. I too, applaud their contributions to this CD. However, let's be clear: this CD is pure America. Every song replete with heart, soul, and love, just like they've been doing it for 40 years. America is still vibrant after all these years. The added "live" CD is an outstanding bonus. When you listen to "Hear and Now", you will realize that it was America that influenced artists such as Schlesinger and Iha, not the other way aroound. Buy it, you won't have any regrets!
Orange Funnels & Snowy Tunnels.......2007-05-27
If there were no 2nd disc of live "best hits" performances, there's a good chance that I'd be content to just read about "Here & Now" here and now on Amazon, and listen to it at a friend's house. But, since there is this very alluring extra feature, and since GB and DB (America) did appear live on Letterman with Ryan Adams in support of this release, the motivation for me to cheer is certainly there.
The excellent live set may be especially appealing to high baritones (either meaning) who once did the obligatory guitar-band covers of these not-so-molding goldies from way back in the 70's. The tunes are holding up pretty darned well after all this time, and there's a great big hole in there for your harmony part, so sing it! Have fun, and don't forget the Proximity Effect - that's a well established audio principle which states that the closer you are to the speakers, the easier it is to sing along in tune!
The primary disc of brand new songs should have no problem appealing to mainstream fans of America's typically tame MOR feel (i.e., Tom Petty goes too far). The overall formula from the 70's remains essentially unchanged, right down to the "dibbadibbadit-dibbadibbadit" background vocals. Censor Alert: Gerry Beckley does use the "a**" word once. But elsewhere, those purtie magic 7th chords are (still) all over his tunes, and his crystal clear tenor sounds more direct, if that is possible, than it ever has. Dewey Bunnell keeps things grounded and continues to contribute good songs (my favorites actually). There's some nice help from Ryan Adams on track #6 "Ride On", his one guest spot. I was under the illusion that he had contributed to the whole thing, but oh well. Rusty Young (from the original Poco) also turns in some fine multi-instrumental support on his two appearances, and the used-to-be-everywhere-you-looked Russell Kunkel keeps time on his one.
The live set is from Oct. 2005 at the XM (as in satellite subscription radio) Performance Theater, which probably means that it was recorded in a warehouse outside of NYC (no location is given), but the audio quality is from the entirely acceptable if somewhat too direct board sound, and the pre-assembled home crowd has a very good time. With just two fewer songs, this would have all fit onto one disc. But *which* two would you drop?
~wonderful songwriters~ singers-musicians too...........2007-05-22
It restores my faith in mankind when I hear true..raw
talent. I was beginning to think that the music industry
was in a rutt-but thanks to wonderful songwriters like Dewey and
gerry....they have shown the young kids what a real song sounds like.
This rap has infected our youth-and even in rural areas of our
coutry and I beleive it is so important...that the young children
hear what real good music is-these two guys are wizards in their field.
and i love them-always have and always will-keep on rockin' Gerry and Dewey.....in the free world.
