You might not know saxophonist Chris Speed's several albums as a member of the cooperative band Human Feel, or his previous album with this quartet, (Deviantics). But Speed's mix of lightly jumpy clarinet and throaty tenor sax, Cuong Vu's midrange trumpet girth, and the incredibly deep anchoring of bassist Skuli Sverrisson and drummer Jim Black make Emit a fascinating document. The band steams with so much energy that they seem a band destined for a dance club (look out, fans of Nils Petter Molvaer, here's an all-acoustic, Ornette-leaning unit to dig), and they then head into noir-tinged environs of slow, rumbly bass and fluid horns hinting of a big, brawny secret in the universe. Emit brings Speed's advanced sense of melody in jazzy contexts to the fore, presenting a full-bore compositional and improvisational talent that deserves much wider recognition. --Andrew Bartlett

3 out of 5 stars Not ambient. One track is worth it. The rest are okay.......2005-09-29

I like many of spacetime continuum's works I decided to buy emit ecaps. I listened to the whole CD few times. I found my self always skipping to String of Pearl and hitting repeat on that track. It ended up being the only one I listen to. SOP is ripe for remixing and has numerous interesting sound bits. Kairo is also good. I decided to buy remit recaps to see how better Kairo and SOP can be remixed. dissappointing. emit ecaps is not a good intro into ambient for those new to the genre. But it is ok to own it if you're a fanatic about collecting anything labeled 'ambient' I'd skip Remit Recaps completely as it is even father away from ambient than this album.

5 out of 5 stars staying power.......2005-06-08

I've been listening to this album for, gosh, about 8 years and I still find it fresh. It has definitely withstood the test of time. Who cares if it's "ambient" or "club" or whatever? This is a great album. Grab it and Remit Recaps and you won't be disappointed.

5 out of 5 stars Nice moves!.......2004-02-03

I usually prefer more drive than is typically offered by Ambient stylings, and in this regard, Emit Ecaps delivers. Beat variations are playful and methodically constructed with surgical precision here. Out Here, Vertigo and Twister are highlights from a thoroughly enjoyable trip into Jonah's world. This album is one of my personal favourites.

Kairo has two excellent remixes - The Subtropic Absolut Black Mix is an excellent take, and Carl Craig puts it to a kickin' bass line... both can be found floating out there in P2P...

5 out of 5 stars Brilliant..........2002-07-10

All right, I am finally getting around to reviewing this album, although it was released back in '96(when astralwerks was still interesting). Jonah Sharp is brilliant, plain and simple. Funky, jazzy basslines (that are never cheesy), subtle textures, precise beats, etc. make this a perfect listen. Spacetime Continuum is ambient music at it's finest...the only thing I have enjoyed more would be the Orb or FSOL, and no one can touch those guys.

5 out of 5 stars From strength to strength.......2001-10-14

Another excellent album by Jonah Sharp. However it is not an ambient album so those expecting another 'Sea Biscuit', well, don't.

What is brilliant about Sharp's music is that it evolves. This is a logical progression form the superb ambient nature of 'Sea Biscuit'. On this album beats are employed with beautiful, stirring melodies and synth motifs. It's a great companion to 'Sea Biscuit' as you will find the album has much the same relaxing effect on you, despite the use of beats on this album.

However some tracks like 'Vertigo' do lend themselves more to the dancefloor but they also contain softer moments aswell, so another home listening delight. Check out 'Swing Fantasy', a great track with a stunning jazzy bassline!

One of the best electronic albums out there.

5 out of 5 stars chill inducing, thought provoking, mind expanding masterpiece compilation.......2007-06-11

The mid and early ninties was a wonderful time for me to be discovering new music--so much good stuff going on, especially with electronic music. One release that stands high above a mountain of ambient music releases from the mid-ninties (1995) is this, Emit 2000 double disc compilation released in the states through Instinct.

The music on here is as exotic, richly colored and strangely beautiful as the wonderful animal photography accompanying this release. The tracks are very memorable too, melodies and sounds and beats staying with you, sometimes creeping up on you in your mind when you least expect it. Where there is nothing wrong with such music, this is not droning nor minimalistic ambient and is more likely to get your mind in a ponderous thinking or creative state rather that lulling you off to la la land.

Though the tracks have a wide range and variety of style, it's all very cohesive, and the sound quality is superb. I always start with disc 2, with Sine's epic "What's On Your Mind"-- a gorgeous slow-builder with a very "aquatic" feel, at one point breaking into a reverb drenched, near East Asian melodic passage before returning to it's oceanic path. If all this sounds a bit pretentious, it's because, as with much of the music I listen to, words can't compare or do it too much justice. Basically, if you're interested in some excellent excellent ambient/electronica-based music that remains ahead of its time, you simply cannot go wrong with this release--worth every cent.

5 out of 5 stars Gorgeous ambient works.......2000-01-13

Bought this for Gas' 'Microscopic' and International People's Gang's 'Nine Churchill Drive'. This compilation album is lush and colorful. Esp. recommended for those who feel ambient music is too stark and bare bones.

4 out of 5 stars excellent overall, with varying ambient flavors.......1999-12-22

A great release from Em:t, available from Instinct. If you buy this CD for only one reason, buy it for the song "What's on your mind?" by Sine. I consider that song to be the pinnacle of chillout music, along with the outer-space mindtrip "Microscopic" by Gas which also appears here. There are quite a few flavors to choose from, from sleepy to groovy to spacey to experimental, which reflects the em:t catalog well. So even if you don't like everything you'll find something that appeals to you. This compillation is also a good introduction for those unfamilliar with ambient, even though it may not cover EVERY ambient style, but who cares about that. Also has great songs from Woob (my favorite), and international People's Gang, and tracks 1-5 on the second disc make for an excellent dreamscape. Get it!

5 out of 5 stars quite simply, the best.......1999-06-17

ambient music unparalleleed in its depth, ingenuity, and warmth. i fancy myself a connoisseur of ambient and related genres. in my humble opinion, nothing (with perhaps the exception of eno's AIRPORTS) comes close to these brilliantly conceived, lushly recorded soundscapes.

i collect this series like baseball cards. buy a couple, you'll see why.

of special note: apparently, instinct records has lisenced individual songs, as well as the em:t artwork and logo, for stateside release. instinct's compilations are different from the ones released by time recordings (which are the ones soleilmoon distributes). if you collect both, you'll find many double-occurrences and the like.

for those interested in this kind of music, also check out woob's two full-length releases (on the same label). you won't be disappointed...

5 out of 5 stars one of my all time favorite chillout albums.......1999-06-08

Emit has a gift for imbuing great depth to their music. It gives me the impression of sounds being layered or even woven together creating a musical labrinth. The album covers a wide spectrum of moods, each having its own unique atmosphere from beautiful to fantasmic to forboding. Sometimes i become so enthralled as i listen to these amazing compositions, i feel as if im being held captive by the music. weird huh? You cannot go wrong with this album, its simply delicious.

5 out of 5 stars There's only good music and bad music.......2003-09-22

Greg Piccolo's repertoire is fascinating, like a never ending bag of tricks. For this CD he pulls out 12 amazing covers of his idols from yesteryear.

Now in his early 50s, Greg Piccolo has lived a 35 year working career of playing blues oriented sax, much of it with the 10 piece Roomful of Blues and the last ten years on his own with either a quintet or a trio. This CD features a quartet.

He sailed though high school doing covers of the late 60s rock at Misquamicut State Beach in Rhode Island where is band nailed the house gig during the summer. In the winter he would play more blues oriented music at the "Como" (Community Center). He later left college to join Roomful of Blues in 1971 where he played until going solo in 1994. He then did two CDs on Fantasy they called Acid Blues, but he wanted to release the magic of this CD, "Homage", independently. It was interesting that Greg chose to do this material since he had more than enough original songs (Pic music) to fill 2 CDs and would sometimes even say he was going to do a country recording. Perhaps it's because of his roots, perhaps to satisfy the critics of his Acid Blues, but probably it's just because he always plays what he wants, whatever it is.

It's nice that he includes Red Prysock's "Handclappin" because Greg has always had the driving energy exemplified in this cut. On the other end of the scale, he slows it down as much as he ever has with a song he still does in his live performances, a heart wrenching cover of Ben Webster's rendition of "Over The Rainbow". Bill Doggett's easy swing is caught by Piccolo in "Ram-Bunk-Shus" (an easy swing reminescent of Piccolo's 1982 original tune "Yes Indeed!").

Gene Ammons and Piccolo are a cosmic fit and Greg chose "You're Not The Kind" for this CD and catches the playful lilt of Ammon's happy go lucky I've got the blues phrasing. Then an intense drama that just might even give you goose bumps is Illinois Jacquet's "You Left Me All Alone" with it's chilling arpeggio crescendos. Joe Houston is brought to life when Piccolo blows "Blow Joe Blow" in a stomping romp that leaves blood.

"Lester Smooths It Out" is an expanded version of Piccolo's improv on his earlier Acid Blue CD, this time more similarly phrased to Lester Young's '40s cut. Piccolo spreads his wings and flies through an Eddie "Lockjaw" Davis arrangement of "Night and Day".

Piccolo has been performing songs by these sax greats for over 32 years but credit should also be given to manager/producer Bonnie Tallman, and the superb session players Marty Ballou on bass, Reese Wynans on piano and organ, and Bobby Ruggiero on drums.

As genres go, in the lofty big tent of jazz sax including Sonny Rollins, The Bird, Coltrane, et al, this may seem down to earth to some. To blues purists this may be too jazzy. To fans of Piccolo's Acid Blues this may seem like tunnel vision. But I give it 5 stars as viewed from Duke Ellington's aura of black and white, good music and bad music.

5 out of 5 stars A Must Have.......2001-02-28

This CD is a must have for all lovers of tradtional jazz instrumental music. Piccolo is a one of the best sax players I have ever heard although relatively unknown at this time I'm sure will hear much more of him in the future.

    5 out of 5 stars Family Blues.......2005-10-08

With members of her family portraying the same deep blues, emotional spirit as she, vocalist/pianist Ann Rabson interprets several originals and a few covers of classic blues tunes. Best known as the gruff contralto voice of Saffire - The Uppity Blues Women, Rabson paints the blues with historical perfection. She's also an outstanding barrelhouse piano player and a unique finger-style guitarist. With her on this family album are her sister Mimi Rabson on violin, her brother-in-law Dave Harris on trombone, her nephew Kenji Rabson on upright bass, her brother Steve Rabson on piano, and her daughter Liz Rabson Schnore on guitar.

Rabson opens the program with two classic blues delights: "Little Red Wagon" and "See See Rider." Willie Dixon and Leroy Carr are also represented on this highly recommended program. The singer and her family capture the essence of each piece accurately and with expert musicianship. Each "sideman" has the same natural feel for the blues as the leader. Like the music of Saffire, her album reaches back to the origins of the blues and concentrates on a historical perspective. Even "I Want to Hop on Your Harley" reaches back to the days when a rollicking boogie-woogie piano and tailgate trombone could thrill live audiences every night of the week. Rabson and her family can do just that. You can hear audio samples from the album at www.emitdoog.com.

5 out of 5 stars Wonderful music, lovingly performed.......2005-09-02

"In a Family Way" is the latest, and possibly greatest, from Ann Rabson (a member of Saffire--The Uppity Blues Women). Great songs, well and sincerely performed, with some really great instrumental accompanyment, esp the trombone and fiddle (all provided by relations). She really makes the old standards come alive, and offers a few of her own which provide great insight and/or humor. What a treasure she is!!

5 out of 5 stars A nicely mixed set of progressive house and tech-trance.......2001-03-20

In the U.S., hardly any dj-mixed electronic dance cd's make the Billboard top 100; in fact, only a pitiful few even make it to the shelves of the franchised cd-and-dvd store at the local minimall. Just recently, mixes by "big names" like John Digweed, Sasha, Fatboy Slim, Paul Oakenfold, and Carl Cox have begun to attract a small core of American listeners, and these may even garner a few (usually condescending) reviews from critics far more comfortable with single-artist rock and hip-hop releases. Most dance music dj's, however (and particularly American ones), continue to work in relative obscurity, choosing and mixing dazzlingly produced tracks out of sheer love of the music.

There are a few of us, however, who have become enamored of various styles of dance music, and for us a new but apparently unheralded mixed cd by a heretofore unknown dj can become a truly exciting event. Such is the case for me with this new mix by Wendel entitled "Emit." I ordered this cd out of sheer curiousity, and on the basis of a few familiar names on the track listing. I am now very happy that I took the chance.

Much of the cd is composed of high-energy, beat-driven progressive house such as that produced by Whoop! Records artists Tarrentalla and Redanka. A few of the tracks shade into dark trance, such as Taylor's well-worn but still fabulous "Xenophobe." Overall, fans of dj's who have adopted the darkish, poundingly rhythmic, multi-layered sound that has emerged within the progressive house genre over the past few years will enjoy what Wendel has to offer here. For me, like-minded dj's who come to mind include John Debo, Lucien Foort, John Digweed, Danny Zee, Robert Oleysyck, DJ Moda, Bill Hamel, and perhaps Nick Warren.

There are some surprises in this cd that show that Wendel knows how to craft his mix to take listeners on a true musical journey, complete with peaks and valleys. Track five, "Xenophobe," is intensely dark and deep; the next track, "Innagroove" by Stuk has the necessary heavy beat to keep listeners dancing, but the melody is now carried oh, so delicately by a sweet-sounding piano-synth. He then takes the audience to a very different place by dropping Timo Maas' "Killing Me," a techno-influenced piece that is rather dissonant in spots, even jarring in its overall effect.

There are a few familiar-sounding tracks that avid fans of progressive might already have on other mixes. These include "Xenophobe," Jimpy/Sarah's "Talkin'," and Mara's "Fall from Grace" (though this mix is very distinctive from others I have heard). Overall, however, the sounds are fresh, not warmed-over. All in all, Emit has done a fine job here, and I'm glad I bought this cd.

5 out of 5 stars A fantastic and adventurous album... .......2006-05-11

Although I've only gotten into Chris Speed recently, I must say I was quite impressed by this album. His Dave Douglas-y writing, with it's highly varied and eclectic influences, combined with the extremely high level of musicianship present in the group, makes for a great listening experience. Jim Black sounds fantastic as usual and Cuong Vu is in particularly fine form here. Great musicians and great material; if this kind of stuff is your bag, definitely check it out.

      4 out of 5 stars Yeah NO's best yet.......2003-03-10

Chris Speed's Yeah NO made "Emit" only a year after their previous effort "Deviantics", and yet the change is remarkable! Speed's writing (still with an underlying Eastern European flavour) has really progressed - his tunes are quite beautiful here, while "Deviantics" seemed a bit more rushed, and as a result, less memorable.

The musicians are firing as usual - Speed on clarinet and tenor sax, Cuong Vu on trumpet, Skuli Sverrisson on bass and Jim Black on drums (and melodica). It is noteworthy that the band toured this material before recording (info from the Songlines website), this no doubt helped to make the recording gel so well.

The variety of "Emit" is great also. There is Yeah NO's usual driving rock, the most interesting example being 'Constance and Georgia' with its shifts of themes and tempos. 'Berance' is probably the grooviest Yeah No tune yet. 'Tangents' is a chaotic montage of jazz phrases. And 'Tralala' is a beautiful change of pace, with Jim Black on melodica.

Black is, as with most of his recordings and performances, a highlight. The variety of Speed's tunes owe something to the amazing variety of the drummer's arsenal, from his trademark off-kilter playing to his imitation electronic beats to all-out chaos.

Nice tunes, good variety, an excellent band. High praise to Speed and co. for a great album!

      5 out of 5 stars muscular cool.......2001-05-01

the clarinet playing is the best i've heard for a while, and that's not to say there's anything wrong with chris speed on sax. what really makes this record amazing, however, is the drumming of jim black. he's like a slightly more rock-oriented jack dejohnette. and then there's the incredible trumpet of cuong vu, perhaps the most interesting new trumpet player around.
