In the 1930s Django Reinhardt and Stephane Grappelli and the Quintet of the Hot Club of France took American jazz, Manouche melodies, and Parisian café music and blended them into an intoxicating style now known as Gypsy jazz. Pearl Django, a band from the Pacific Northwest, play music that's inspired by Reinhardt and Grappelli, but as their delightful versions of swing standards on Under Paris Skies show, they are more than mere copyists. When Pearl Django plays Hot Club standards like "Nuages" or "Swing 39," the guitar and fiddle solos retain the effortless bounce of the original versions, but the propulsive rhythms are pure American swing. In a nice change from the standard Hot Club stringed-instrument lineup of three guitars, violin, and bass, Pearl Django includes an accordion on four numbers, a deft touch that recalls the music's birth in the cafés and bistros of France. Pearl Django provide the ideal entry to the world of gypsy jazz. "Under Paris Skies" takes the listener on a jaunty walk through the streets of Paris. It is full of joy and expert playing. Hard to imagine who wouldn't like this one. Highly recommended.

I've heard Stephane Grappelli live in concert three times in my life, the last time just a year before he died. I began collecting Django Reinhardt and Grappelli albums in the 70's, and then CD's in the 80's and 90's. After Grappelli's death, I thought I'd never hear this sound live again. I heard Pearl Django live at a jazz festival yesterday, and this group is the real thing. And what's wonderful about their albums is that the sound is crisp and clear, unlike those re-releases of old Hot Club albums from the 30's. It gives a taste of what it must have been like to actually hear Django and Grappelli first hand.

I'm now a Pearl Django raving fan!! I saw them a couple months ago here in Anacortes, WA and ever since then I can't get enough of them. I just turn this cd on continuous play and listen to it all day!!!

Pearl Django has done it again. I couldn't stop playing their album "Mystery Pacific" continuously and now it's the same with "Under Paris Skies". Standout performances include Limehouse Blues, I've Found A New Baby, Nuages, Zingarelli, and Swing 39. Check 'em out. I consistently find Pearl Django to be my favorite (stylistically) group out of the modern Hot Club-style bands. Way to go!

I am a big fan of Jazz and am always looking for good instrumental recordings that are melodic and easy on the listeners ears. This is my favorite recording to put on while I am cooking, doing computer work or working around home. This is an excellent example of mellow, upbeat jazz!

Well worth the wait and effort it took to find this. Being a big fan of this genre of music and these songs was like having icing on top of icing on the cake.

              Karen Akers's long dream of recording a CD in French is realized here, as she enters the vocal milieu of Edith Piaf, whose earlier versions of many of these songs still echo in Akers's simple arrangements. Akers's French sounds natural. She is comfortable (and brave) singing some of Piaf's most famous songs, and her acting ability enhances many of these songs by giving them new phrasing and new life. Ranging from a whisper to a strong, full-out alto, she remains in total control throughout, both of the melody and of her own emotional interpretation. Hers is a big voice, but she wisely subdues it, resisting the temptation of vocal histrionics in favor of more subtle interpretations for these romantic songs.

              Most of her accompaniments are understated. In "Under Paris Skies," the primary accompaniment is the accordion, with some emphasis achieved with a bell lyre. "Un Jour, Tu Verras," the piano, clarinet, and bass keep things simple, while the accordion is used near the end. "La Vie en Rose," one of Piaf's most famous songs, is sung more slowly to a piano accompaniment (Michael Abene), with Akers achieving great passion and exaggerating the guttural French R's. Her strong voice is higher than Piaf's and more melodic, and though it is less "gutty," it is equally effective in wresting emotion from the lyrics.

              A Charles Aznavour song, "Une Enfante," about a flower child dying beside the road because she can not live on love alone, incorporates the urgency of passionate love, then slows to a poignant recognition of reality. One of the most effective songs on the album is "La Chanson des Vieux Amants," a Jacques Brel song about old lovers and the "tender war" which keeps them both energized.

              Filled with passion, which she conveys through her phrasing, sometimes slower tempos, simple accompaniments, and her variations in volume, Karen Akers does justice to the songs of Piaf, Aznavour, and Brel, giving them fresh sounds and meanings, and enlarging her repertoire for the world stage.               Karen Akers rox singing these French standards. The musicianship is truly good / authentic. The flute was used a bit excessively in this album, but that's just a pet peeve of mine. BUY this CD if you love French music!

              This is as fine a collection of French music of the post-war period as I have ever heard, old or new. The arrangements are outstanding and the artist does justice to the French. I am particularly gratified that Ms Akers renders the songs as they were intended in that lovely language. She sings in clear, beautiful French.
              If you are a fan of Parisian cabaret then you will love this CD. If you want an introduction to it, this is an excellent choice as well.

              A beautiful album.
              Karen Akers is one of those few artists who could interprete those classic French standards with such class & Parisien style. She does a great job with Piaf's "Padam Padam", "La vie en rose" and the rest of the songs are spellbinding, her voice is in great shape. Simply breathtaking!
