All for You is a tribute to the Nat "King" Cole Trio of the 1940s, when Cole performed as both a singer and a pianist. Krall, like her heroes Lena Horne and Carmen McRae, is also a singer-pianist, and she plays both roles on most of the songs here. She's able to link her singing to her piano playing in sympathetic ways and projects tremendous feeling through both. Like Cole in the '40s, Krall plays with a drummerless trio--here with guitarist Russell Malone and bassist Paul Keller. Their sense of intimate rapport is especially valuable on ballads such as "You Call It Madness" and "I'm Thru with Love," but also allows such uptempo tunes as "Hit That Jive Jack" to swing with surprising lightness. --Geoffrey Himes

Diana Krall's voice is like no one else's and I love listening to her. She's very talented in her piano playing, of course, but that voice of hers and the songs on her albums --- I've never been disappointed in any of her work.

Most of the songs here are unfamiliar to me. But in every track one hears the remarkable singing voice of Krall. She is one of those singers like Streisand who makes the voice a musical instrument. She moves us in so many subtle ways. And there is something about the quality of her voice, its fullness, its beautiful timbre. She seems also to have such control of what she is doing , and she is always making it interesting with new little riffs here and there. She is the best 'new singer' I have heard in years.
Just a remarkable singer who it is pleasure to hear.

If you are big fan of Nat King Cole, or even a young listener just getting into NKC, you will not be disappointed in this offering. It's representative of all his best, (just like the title claims) and will mellow you out with his honey-baritone voice unlike anyone else in recorded history. While the lyrics can be sappy and sentimental, they are reflective of his day, and they really don't detract from the overall experience of this wonderful artist's offerings. He is every bit as influential as Sinatra, Brother Ray, or Ella; a true American national treasure. Enjoy!

I've always heard Nat on movie soundtracks,Christmas carols,and in various other malls,friends houses,etc.But there is a distinct difference between just hearing and listening.I started watching reruns of his groundbreaking TV show on BETJ and was awestruck by the presence of his voice and personality.I'm not an expert on Nat King Cole by any stretch of the imagination,but when I listen to this CD(usually on Saturday or Sunday mornings)I am spellbound.This is a great crossection of an incredible artist and man.

This has to be the ultimate double take album;everybody I've played it for
says,"That's Nat King Cole?!I knew he could sing,but..." Well, I'm certainly happy to have tracked this down as proof that the critics aren't always wrong;he really was one of the handful of great pianists,ever.And check out the treatment he gives to Rachmaninoff's
'Prelude In C Sharp Minor' and 'Laugh!Cool Clown'-his take on 'Pagliacci' by Leoncavallo.'However,Cole's drummerless trio came about(the cd booklet isn't entirely sure whether drummer Lee Young-Lester's brother didn't show up for a gig or a club owner suggested it-Cole,along with Oscar Moore on guitar and Johnny Miller on bass,was one very fortunate "accident".

Nat Cole was a great band leader and arranger besides being a great vocalist and pianist. The first eleven selections are outstanding "Jumpin' At Capitol" through "Rhumba Azul." The next four are basically piano solos with accompanment by the guitar and the bass. The last three are average with annoying bongos/congas. But the first eleven with what Will Friedwald termed the greatest edition of the King Cole Trio (Cole, guitarist Oscar Moore and bassist Johnny Miller) overwhelmingly makes this a five-star CD album that the inferior quality of the last seven does not detract from it. In my opinion, Capitol should have included "I Know That You Know," "To A Wild Rose," "Rex Rhumba," "In The Cool Of The Evening," and "Laguna Mood" in lieu of the last seven.

The way Cole, Moore and Miller treated "The Man I Love" by the Gershwin Brothers rates as classical jazz. It is the best rendition of that great work of art that I ever heard. In fact "The Man I Love" with "Body And Soul," by Johnny Green and et al, Rachmaninov's "Prelude In C Sharp Minor" and Cole Porter's "What Is This Thing Called Love" constitute the greatest date (January 17, 1944) in recorded history for small group jazz.

Enjoy the music by the King Cole Trio as I have since 1963 when I was a fourteen-year old kid.

5 out of 5 stars Oscar's Primary Progenitor?.......2002-08-13

If like me you came to jazz after 1955, chances are you're quite familiar with Nat the pop singing star but know far less about his piano prowess. This is the album that finally set the record straight for me--he was above all a talented, creative jazz pianist whose sensual voice seduced not only the public but Nat as well into listening exclusively to its promises of fame and fortune. Had he not sung a note, he would no doubt have taken his place right alongside Teddy Wilson and Art Tatum. In fact, listening to him on this album is so much like hearing Oscar Peterson (who ironically inherited Nat's singing voice as well) that I've had to revise my life-long assumption that Oscar was above all a descendant of Tatum. The Cole lineage seems ever more traceable, especially when you consider that one of Oscar's favorite jazz performances was "Easy Listening Blues," one of 18 tracks on this CD.

Twenty-five years ago I had a chance to have a brew or two with Monty Alexander. When I asked him if Oscar was a major influence, he responded: "Yes, but not as much as Nat." Now I finally understand what he was talking about.

(Note: No doubt Capitol will replace this 1992 reissue with a remastered version minus the surface noise. Bear in mind, however, that there's always a trade-off: Eliminating "scratchy" sounds also erases high-frequency musical information.)

It also features Cole's often-overlooked skills as an Earl Hines-style pianist. "Quizas, Quizas, Quizas (Perhaps, Perhaps, Perhaps)," and "Darling, Je Vous Aime Beaucoup," attest to his international appeal, and see if you can keep a dry eye when you listen to Natalie Cole's posthumous, digitally-enhanced duet with her father on "Unforgettable."             Nat "King" Cole endured more than his share of scorn and rebuke from all manner of fans and critics. He wasn't jazzy enough to satisfy many, not white enough to please the pop cultural obsession with Anglo- and Euro-American stardom. In answer to all of this, Cole simply proceeded, crooning beautifully even after he'd walked away from the piano and become primarily a vocal sensation. This 1956 collection is famous as Cole's riposte to the critique that he wasn't jazzy. The session brings several Swing Era stars on board: violinist Stuff Smith, trumpeter Harry "Sweets" Edison, trombonist Juan Tizol, and alto saxophonist Willie Smith. The horns and violin fronted a semistandard jazz setup of guitar, drums, and percussion, along with Cole's own considerable chops on piano. As an improviser, Cole heavily influenced a generation of ivory ticklers, including Oscar Peterson and others, and here he shows himself a stellar pianist. His runs bespeak Cole's utter perfection on the keyboard. This is a crucial document. --Andrew Bartlett
