Customer Reviews:
Good companion for Battlestar Fans.......2007-05-07
If you're a Battlestar Galatica Fan, this audio is an excellent companion to your collection. Passacaglia, Forgiven, and The Shape of Things to Come are emotional and addictive orchestral soundtracks. Not every song from the first season is included in this CD. The opening credit songs for the UK and the US versions and the battle songs (The Thousandth Landing, Battle on the Asteroid) are included. Battlestar Muzaktica is quite odd and doesn't fit with the collection of songs.
Captures the feel of the show.......2007-04-11
Has a great selection of songs from the 1st season. I like show/movie CDs that you can picture the scenes and emotion of the actors when you hear the song. The Celtic underlays are great, and the Taiko drumming style is very well used for building intensity in the music. If you really like the series, you should probably really enjoy the music as well!
Awesome Soundtrack.......2007-04-11
If you like the music in a scene that just blends in and makes the scene even more emotional or suspenseful, that is what the scores from season one do on this cd. I initially bought it to for the prologue (cylon music) and the two main titles (U.S. and U.K.) but after listening to the entire cd, I have become completely addicted to it. The titles of the scores usually give you a hint of the scene and the liner notes also tell you the episode that they are from but the soundtrack has definitely made rewatching season one an even more intriguing experience. The scores with words, are written by Bear and are in various languages, but the words, especially the opera piece, are actually so dead one with the scene and in this specific scene hilarious. I love this soundtrack. If you are someone who is addicted to really grasping everything that happens in this show and watch and analyze it beyond face value, this is an added bonus to have in your collection. I highly recommend it!!!
BSG.......2007-04-10
Man I love the Classic and the Present BSG's So Inaturally find the SoundTrack/Score A joy and very relaxing. They tend to sound very similar but they are very diffrent.
Agree with everyone else.......2007-03-28
There have been lots of raving reviews of this album, as well as the equally sensational season 2 soundtrack. I just wanted to add my opinion on one track, "Destiny". An earlier review describes an Arabic string instrument being used, but it is actually a biwa, a traditional Japanese instrument that has such a distinct sound that it's hard to imagine it being used for anything other than traditional gagaku music. I don't know if anyone but McCreary has ever tried to use this instrument for something else, but it hardly matters. The fact that McCreary managed to use it so effectively in a piece that is so different from gagaku music is a perfect testament to his unique genius. I'm really looking forward to following McCreary's career.

A mature and at times moving work, Once in a Red Moon fortifies Secret Garden's stature as a marquee New Age act. The duo of Irish violinist Fionnuala Sherry and pianist-composer Rolf Lovland here refine their specialty of making classical/contemporary/Celtic mini-epics in small orchestral and choral settings. Moreover, each piece elicits reflection, celebration, or atonement with the divine. Red Moon's mood of melancholy is stronger than usual--"Invitation" and "Fairytale" are the disc's only propulsive tracks--though there's an undercurrent of lamentation and reverence. Highlights include the gospel-fueled, Josh Groban-like "You Raise Me Up," sung by Brian Kennedy (Riverdance) and fittingly conducted by Steven Mercurio (musical director for Andrea Bocelli). And a riveting, slow-building plea for peace, "Elegie," features the voices of Anuna and a forceful, concluding piano chord--a composite of 66 C chords submitted by fans worldwide in response to an online invitation from the group. --Terry Wood
Customer Reviews:
This deserves prime place in any music collection!.......2007-02-10
Every time a new Secret Garden album comes along, it sounds just that bit more special than the last, and I expect the bubble to break and everyone will be talking about them. However, to date they still seem to be low key and little heard of. Maybe this wonderful album will be the one to turn that around!
The mix of Norwegian classical orchestration with the most beautiful and evocative in Celtic music, makes for a sublimely uplifting and relaxing experience. This is not just chill out music, but music to inspire.
The collaborators, particularly Brian Kennedy and Karen Matheson add a wonderful extra element which lets the music really breathe, and means the listener will never get bored with the CD - you'll be able to listen to this over and over and over again, making this the best value CD you will buy this year.
Soothing.......2007-01-03
This music will speak to your soul. I have listened to Secret Garden for years. I watched a movie and the composer's music seemed to just speak to my soul. Listening to this music will totally relax you. I have since ordered all of his music.
one of my favorite albums ever.......2006-11-03
"Once In a Red Moon" is a beautiful album, probably my favorite by Secret Garden. I especially love "Greenwaves" and the original version of "You Raise Me Up", but the other ten tracks are also wonderful. This music is beautiful, soothing, and artistically done. Also, it's easy to listen to over and over - I have listened to it so many times, but I'm not tired of it yet.
The Best so Far.......2005-12-04
I have Songs from..., White Stones, and Dawn of a New Century. I love all three, but I believe Once in a Red Moon is the best so far. I was concerned about there being three vocals, but the music is so good that they are written to that they don't distract from the others. I liked the first three releases so much that I was surprised that they could come out with one better, but I believe they did. They have such a beautiful rich sound, that I listen to them over and over and worry about getting tierd of it, but I don't. I can't say that about many artists. If you like the first three releases, don't miss this one.
Very good, just not their best........2004-09-20
Speaking as an avid Secret Garden fan, I must regretfully say that I had some problems with this album. First and foremost: WAY too many vocal tracks. In their first albums, Secret Garden was an almost exclusively instrumental group. It was nice to leave some interpretation up to the listener, and be enveloped in pure musical bliss (especially in the album White Stones). This is not to say that there weren't some memorable tracks in Red Moon, quite to the contrary. I just found myself skipping ahead to the "good" stuff. Also, I found the chord progressions in "You Raise Me Up" to be unmistakenly similar to Bette Midler's "Wind Beneath My Wings." Try listening to the song and insert the other lyrics, you'll laugh. Please don't misunderstand me; this is a very decent album, with some very beautiful moments ("Duo", "Elegie", and "Belonging" to name a few), and I would recommend this album to any fan of the group. This album simply isn't their best.

Customer Reviews:
ac who?.......2007-07-07
I was never particularly familiar with AC/DC. I was too young, or had the wrong friends, or something. But in Koselek's rendition of these songs I feel as though I can hear the originals without needing to hear them. More than that, Koselek takes us into the heart and soul of the songs. It's like hearing the writer discussing the emotional undercurrent of his lyrics on a therapist's couch. But it's far more than that. Koselek is a genius at getting inside and under a song and making it his own. He crafts beautifully simple arrangements that sound as though they came first.
I'd highly recommend this album. I've listened to it regularly for months. And, if you like this, you'll love Koselek's similar treatment of Modest Mouse. Modest Mouse I am familiar with, I'm a huge Mouse fan, and what Koselek does with their beautiful songs under the moniker Sun Kil Moon is a treat to hear. Tiny Cities

why did I wait so long?.......2005-02-03
the Red House Painters were a band I heard of MANY times but never actually listened to. It was in winter 2001 when I heard "Mistress" on an old 1993 CD compilation. After getting hooked on the RHP right away, a friend recomended "Rock and Roll Singer" and "What's Next To The Moon", but for some reason I never picked them up. What a big mistake. I still Don't have Rock and Roll Singer but I just got a hold of What's Next To The Moon and I absolutely love this CD. All AC/DC songs done acoustic and mellow. I would HIGHLY recomend this CD to any fan of the RHP. Honestly, I think this CD blows away ANYTHING that Mark has done in the past.
Kozelek's Alchemic Touch.......2004-07-23
Mark Kozelek has been putting out great music for a long time, from the early Red House Painters' output all the way to his recent "Ghosts of the Great Highway" under his new band's banner, Sun Kil Moon.
This effort is one of two solo albums he recorded after RHP disbanded, and probably the quirkiest and most ambitious of both albums. Every song here is an AC-DC cover, and when you think of the high Heavy Rock energy of the original versions, contrasted with Kozelek's laid back and melancholy sound signature, the results are wondrous.
Not being a fan of AC-DC, I did not bring any prior love of this material to justify potentially mediocre renditions. Even further I was somewhat skeptical about Kozelek's left-of-field repertoire choice.
The final product of this venture could not be more pleasing in its realization nor surprising as far as the new depths of feeling he's brought out from these tunes.
It takes a talent and modesty like Kozelek's to sense the essential beauty in these songs, strip the sound to its bare truth, and come out with such personal reading of such unlikely material.
If in addition to your respect for Kozelek you also dig AC-DC, this may be even more rewarding for you that has already been for me. If Kozelek's own writing has already moved you, you may prefer to check his other acoustic album out, Rock and Roll Singer.
Either one is bound to fulfill the proper expectations.
The Jack.......2004-03-19
Mark of Red House Painters puts his heart into these truly soulful gems by AC/DC. Seriously. I have a lot of the original buried on tape from my metal youth, so these are familiar passages. Mark makes good selections and pays attention to remaining true to the songs intent while stripping them down to and exposing their beauty. The sincerity given to the hidden treasure "If You Want Blood" from Bon Scott era "Highway to Hell" is worth the price of admission. If only he'd payed homage to "The Jack".

Thomas Hampson is a persuasive advocate for these treasures from the Library of Congress' vast collections, so this CD's generous sampling leaves you wanting more. It covers the American songbook in all its variety, from traditional "folk" items like Shenandoah to Stephen Foster to the immigrants Erich Korngold and Kurt Weill to Leonard Bernstein and contemporary composers. Hampson adjusts his flexible, light baritone to fit each song. The voice is full and resonant on Danny Deever, simple and direct in 19th-century traditional songs and ballads, and nuanced in songs like Ned Rorem's "As Adam Early in the Morning," one of several on the disc with texts by Walt Whitman. A standout is the last song in this recital, one that leaves you with thoughts about music, history, and our nation's continuing issues, "Ethiopia Saluting the Colors," by Henry Burleigh. Most of the selections are performed with piano accompaniment, but several are with a small ensemble of traditional instruments. A word of caution: everything was recorded in the 1990s and presumably was available piecemeal on previous releases, although few are likely to have more than a handful of these 20 gems. --Dan Davis
Customer Reviews:
It's lovely - But not newly recorded!.......2006-10-04
I don't think this recording deserves One Star ratings or that the artist deserves such crude bashing. And re: Hampson's eye-colour.... Uh, these aren't lenses? He has blue eyes. I met him many times and...indeed, they are dark blue.
Anyhow, this is what Hampson is focusing on right now, American song. While those aren't exactly my thing I have to say that he sings them beautifully. I wish he'd stick to that rather than heavy Verdi and Wagner which his voice isn't right for.
Yet another compilation.......2006-06-13
I am a huge Tom fan. I go to his concerts and buy all of his CDs. I must say that I have been disappointed by this CD because it's entirely made of old recordings. There's a new photo on the cover, but that's all that is new here. So if you've bought your share of Tom CDs over the years, you want to check out the track info before you guy this one.
Now, Tom has been on tour and I STRONGLY recommend that you go see him next year when he comes through your city.
The other thing really annoying is that on the CD where you'd expect information about the music or the recording co., you instead get a large warning label from the FBI on pirating.
how precious!.......2006-05-08
Thomas Hampson swoons and croons to monotonous effect throughout this tired collection; again displaying his ego and faux scholarship in ample measure. Oi-vay, what a disaster! And what is with the blue contact lenses in the Jacket phot? Hampson's eyes are brown. What an unbelievably vain Diva!
Disappointing Duplication.......2006-01-17
I have not even heard the album, and I will not. Although I revere Mr. H. in just about everything he does, especially in song and Lieder, I am very disappointed that so many of these songs appear on other cds of which I already have about 19 of him. I think he and the producers should have chosen totally NEW material for this instead of drawing on his past achievements. I have no reservations about his performances, for I have seen him at the Met in opera and at Carnegie Hall in Mahler. I value them and all of his past cd productions.
If you like this sorta thing.......2006-01-17
Here Mr. Hampson is in his element. Unlike his less than viable attempts at Opera, Mr. Hampson is a thorough and intelligent singer of songs. His affectations, so fully inappropriate in bigger operatic literature, work well with the intimate nature of these sweet and personal songs. If you are Hampson fan, this album will thrill you.

On Red Moon, Peter Kater returns to the fields of his greatest artistic and commercial success, reuniting with Native American flute player R. Carlos Nakai. The pair made several albums in the 1990s that explored an intuitive, Native chamber music sound, much of it built on improvisation. Along with Nakai, Kater works with Native musicians Robert Mirabal and Mary Youngblood on Red Moon. Also here are non-Native players like Paul McCandless of the group Oregon and Ara Tokatlian of Arco Iris. This is a more contemporarily grooved and composed work, with Kater basing much of the music on rhythm loops. It gives him a hipper rhythmic palette, albeit one that's a bit generic. But on top, he's orchestrated some hypnotic tracks like "Deep Waters," with intertwined flute and low pennywhistle from Nakai and McCandless over a cycling guitar pattern and trance rhythm. Although Robert Mirabal is featured prominently in the packaging, he only contributes incidental speaking vocals on one track. It's the other musicians who lend their sounds to Kater's lush arrangements and piano, creating a tension between soulful moods and plush melodies. --John Diliberto

from Solo Piano Publications.......2004-01-07
"Red Moon" is Peter Kater's Grammy-nominated CD for Best New Age album of 2003. It is an ensemble collection of pieces with a very Native American yet contemporary flavor, a style Kater is as noted for as he is solo piano. "Red Moon" features Kater on piano and synthesizers, but he is not the dominating musician on most tracks, allowing his stellar guest musicians to shine fully. These musicians include Mary Youngblood on Native American flute; R. Carlos Nakai on vocals, flute, and eagle bone whistle; Chenoa Egawa and Robert Mirabal on vocals; Paul McCandless working his magic on penny whistle, sax, oboe, and duduk; and Tony Levin on bass guitar. Many of the tracks are upbeat and rhythmic, while others are a bit more soulful and subdued. Five of the eleven tracks contain vocals in Native American languages and chants, which are very enjoyable and interesting, but, as usual, I much prefer the instrumentals, which absolutely soar.
"Night Realm" opens the collection with percussion, duduk, and flute, and then piano and later vocal. This is a fascinating piece because it's impossible to classify. There are jazz, Native American, and other ethnic influences, but it is still uniquely itself - a joyful blending of all of these ingredients. "Deep Waters" adds an element of mystery with a rhythmic backdrop for the dark and sensuous flutes and sax. "Only In Your Arms" is one of the few mostly piano pieces, and it's both gorgeous and deeply passionate. Nakai's flute and McCandless' oboe enhance the depth of feeling. Other instrumentation is also added, but Kater's piano sings through. "The West" has the feeling of a movie soundtrack - a field Kater has a lot of experience in. Another rhythmic piece, this one is mostly piano and Native American flute, and is darkly beautiful. "Never Ending Journey" is one of my favorites, and features Ara Tokatlian on pincullo flute. With jazz tinges, the flute, piano, and guitar really take flight - a great piece! "This Moment" is more of a smooth jazz piece with piano and flute as well as percussion and synth washes. "Dream Catcher" is an almost ethereal slow dance, again mostly flute and piano, and so soulful and passionate - another favorite!
Peter Kater has once again shown why he is one of my favorite artists. This is a great album whether you are new to Kater's music or a longtime fan. Recommended!
Awesome but reject the shamanism.......2003-10-16
I love Peter Kater and most of his music without occult or shaman titles in them, because the truth is, it is part of a cult thinking and spiritual darkness. I studied it for years as I did other cults and I know people firsthand who were involved with the illuminated cult and "ism. Otherwise he has an excellent talent and beautiful spirit in music and melodic creation on the piano and you cannot deny that he has a God-given gift, if and when he ever acknowledges that is truly where it comes from.
A Perfect New Age/World Album!.......2003-05-28
In the eighties I had a close friend who only believed what he could see, his world was only safe when structurally all the pieces fit together. Needless to say my buddy wasn't exactly a poster child for that 'God' fan club! He did however concede to possibly hearing God in the form of music specifically through his favorite artist pianist Peter Kater. "If your big master in the sky exists" he once told me "then he's juicing up Peter Kater." When an atheist talks about the possibility of God in any form it gets our attention. Kater has always had a knack for tapping into a deep spiritual place via his music. His 'Fool and the Hummingbird' album from 1987 was a result of an encounter with a Hummingbird who seemed to bond with Kater after flying in his house. It remains one of the best examples of jazz fusing with New Age music. In the early nineties Kater teamed up with Navajo-Ute flautist R.Carlos Nakai and produced two of the best native recordings of all time with the two volumes of 'How the West Was Lost.' Both were soundtrack works for the Discovery Channel documentary series of the same name. Kater's latest 'Red Moon' encompasses all the melt your heart charm and spiritual connection of his previous classics. Again the angle is Native American and features old pal Nakai plus three other Flautists Mary Youngblood, Robert Mirabal and Ara Tokatlian. This is not typical traditional native fare though the tempo at times touches that New-Age/Jazz feel but the like all of Katers works the underbelly is all about living your truth through a connection to something bigger. Highlights include 'Night Realm' a breezy little ditty with a coaxing inviting feel to relax and 'Red Moon' featuring haunting chanting vocals from Nakai. Red Moon is rejuvenating and inspirational and represent a brand of New Age music that's become quiet popular in the last few years - the tempo driven feel good side which is great for relaxation but it certainly won't put you to sleep and who knows - it may just help you find God! john@smoothjazzcanada.com

Composer, premiere player, soloist - Yin Cheng-zong's authentic Yellow River Concerto.......2007-07-03
I owned this disc for more than 12 years already. The CD cover was already the third one.
Lang Lang recently made a new recording of this piece with DG.
I heard master Yin play this piece (in Lang Lang's stead) last evening in Hong Kong Cultural Centre, and he moved me to tears.
Yin Cheng-zong is over 60 years old now. He lived through the various turmoils of China. It requires life experience and patriotism to interpret this piece, so very sorry, I haven't heard any foreign pianist playing this piece yet, let alone on record.
HOWEVER, Yin Cheng-zong did made a recording of this piece with Claudio Abbado, but the recording has never been released by the PRC official broadcasting agency. Yin himself claims that this was one of the most memorable performances he had of this piece - Abbado understands the piece so well that Yin was highly amazed!
The foremost player and interpretor of this piece remains Yin Cheng-zong, but I must say that ALSO hearing Lang Lang playing this piece a couple of days ago (also in Hong Kong), Lang's playing of this piece is vastly improving.
something missing and deadly wrong here.......2006-11-07
when i listened to this concerto, the first impression was something deadly wrong. if you want to portray and describe a river, the best way is to start from its origin, it might be just a trickle of dripping water and a small stream at first, then when going down, meet and entwine with other small streams, it gradually evolving into a great river all way down to the ocean. that's the way how you use the music to portray a river.
but the composer of this 'yellow river' was educated in the chinese communist system, his composition was still dominated subjectively by the blind chinese revolutionary passion, the concerto from the very beginning sounds like listening to a cultural revolution marching song, banging and pounding so headstrong against almost all the foreign elements, condemning so viciously and so mercilessly with hatred, like revolutionary army at wars, like those stupid formula musicals, songs and plays created in the cultural revolution era to please the butcher chairman mao. there's almost no big difference here. when you listen to this concerto, only a small part and portion make you feel like something good and wonderful offered by the river, most part of it sounds too clueless military.
we all knew that the chinese civilization and it's culture was originated from the yellow river, it's like a mother of china. yes, yellow river is always unpreditable and changing, its inevitable floodings in the history caused a lot of deaths and tragedies, but a river could never be always so merciless and vicious. this concerto and this music is not an appropriate interpretation of the yellow river but a chinese communist revolutionary marching song by a die hard communist composer. it's a very bad concerto actually.
Contains many piano solo treasures.......2006-03-26
The most important thing about this CD is its beautiful solo piano music from classical Chinese literature. You'll be amazed and delighted.
Trust me~ You will never get tired of it........2004-08-07
This is an excellent album that worth adding to your collection. Moreover, such great music for such low price, there is no reason you shouldn't buy it.
Very nice Music.......2003-01-15
I've heard The Yellow River Cantata for long time before I got this CD, this CD would be a very nice CD on your collection. And when I came to Yellow River (Hoang He) in the summer and spring, I knew this concerto said the trust: The river is always changing, savage and quiet. There is enough Asian spirit on this CD. As you know, every old chinese word and song are based on a story (called Gu dian, means classical) and if you know much about chinese stories you will feel completly this CD. One of famous Gu Dian is the fighting of Chinese people against the flood every year at the river's banks, for thousand years. You can find more information and "Gu dian" about this river in Chinese histories or stories.

Customer Reviews:
My favorite live album........2002-08-02
The Call live rates up there with the best live album by anyone.
They manage to bring that passion and communicate it to this listeners heart. But that's what the Call were all about, music that delves deep into the human soul. Great experience. Any CD by these guys is worth checking out. Take care!
All the energy of the real thing.......2002-03-16
I saw this tour at the now defunct Bogarts in Long Beach, and in fact, it was the show they did a couple days before (or after?) the one used for this recording. Though that show went on for almost three hours (!) and this recording is substantially shorter, one nevertheless gets all the energy and the best moments (including Michael slapping out a bass solo) on this excellent recording. Know that it is raw in parts and no overdubbing was done, but for me that just adds to the charm.
PURE RAW TALENT!.......2001-03-01
THE BEST LIVE CD EVER PRODUCED! I only wish I could have seen the group in person. I will always regret that - but at least I have this CD and what a CD it is! THE CALL IS THE MOST UNDERATED BAND OF OUR TIME!
A "Live" recording at its best!.......2001-02-16
I've heard a lot of live CDs and albums, but this is the best. There is no mixing or over-dubing to improve the quality of the sound. It is The Call 100% raw, as they would sound if you were there hearing them in person. It almost sounds like some boot-legs of bands in concert that I have heard. Yet another feather in the cap of one of the greatest bands of all-time. The Call deserves the title, "Best band you aren't listening to".
Michael Been is a god.......2000-12-20
I saw this tour at the Bottom line in NYC. They played an amazing show. Michael Been has such a great voice and writes beautiful lyrics. It was like seeing the band play in my living room. Listening to this disc brought me back to that show 10 years ago....
Music needs more groups like the Call. Never a big MTV hit, the Call blow away all the "boy bands" of today....

Greg Brown sounds like he has dirt beneath his fingernails, gravel in his throat, and stars in his eyes. Milk of the Moon, the 19th album of Brown's career, reasserts his dual status as both the bard of the heartland and the Barry White of folk-blues. It's the first Brown disc in a good while not to feature the smoky slide guitar of Bo Ramsey (who was busy recording and touring with Lucinda Williams), and the result is the simpler, spare sound of the tender, nostalgic ballad "Telling Stories" and the spine-tingling opener "Lull It Bye." There are some new touches, too: an organ on "Steady Love," a vocal distortion effect on "Let Me Be Your Gigolo" and "The Moon Is Nearly Full," and here and there the harmonies of Karen Savoca (who succeeds the likes of Prudence Johnson and Kate MacKenzie as Brown's female vocal foil). It may not match classics like Further In, The Poet Game, and In the Dark with You, but Milk of the Moon is a worthy addition to Brown's rich catalog. --Anders Smith Lindall
Customer Reviews:
Brilliant Greg Brown.......2003-11-15
Once again Greg Brown covers the full spectrum of emotions with fine lyrics and beautiful music ranging from a solo banjo to some sweet blues guitar. I recommend this album for the long time Greg Brown listener as well as for a first time Greg Brown purchase. I've been a fan of Greg Brown since the 80's when I heard him on PHC and purchased 44&66 on vinyl. Milk of the Moon is fine album.
mellifluous and memorable.......2003-01-18
I got this album today and can't stop listening to it. "Telling Stories" and "Oh You" are two of the best songs I've heard in a long long time. Greg Brown's baritone, unlike some who have ended up that way after years of vocal abuse, seems natural and unforced. This album just flows, and is one of the best folk albums of the year.
Greg does it again!!!!! A future Country/Folk masterpiece.......2002-09-29
I had expected to just hear a typical Greg Brown album. ALWAYS PROFILIC. I was jamming to this new CD with a passion. This album could go down to be very well be one of the first new Folk "masterpiece" of the new century. Greg once again is true to his roots, as he does perform in a personal and warm premise. One of my favorite tracks would be "A Little Excited" (I hope when he performs in concert at McCabe's Guitar Shop in L.A. next time, he will perform that track) Heck, with an album of exceptional quality as this, who wouldn't be a "little excited" over ??? Peace - JG "The Bear"
Back to Form.......2002-04-16
Greg Brown is probably the only musician of whom I would say I am a fan. Generally, I feel affinity for albums rather than musicians. But I look forward to each release of Greg's because his music connects with me so frequently. Not every album does that, but more than is true of most musicians. For example, I thought his last album, "Covenant," was not up to his usual standards of songwriting and it didn't really connect with me.
"Milk of the Moon," on the other hand, is a step back toward "Poet Game" and "Further In" and "Slant 6 Mind," which are the albums I regard as his strongest and some of the best albums ever recorded by anyone. This one has a different sound and feel, which is not surprising since he is working with different musicians, a different producer, and in a different studio. But there is no mistaking it is still a Greg Brown record, and, for my money, it is an excellent one.
Greg Does the Milky Way.......2002-04-12
Veteran folkbard Greg Brown knows the dark and muddy places of the heart. On his latest Redhouse Recording, he sings of love found, lost, and better left alone. With ethereal vocal backup from Karen Savoca, and the sometimes structured, sometimes writhing backup from axe-ter Pete Heitzman, Greg's smoky voice alternately comforts, confronts, and condemns.
The recording visits dark blues ("The Moon is Nearly Full"), primitive country (a lilting "Lull it Bye", featuring just Greg and his banjo), even 60's Hammond Organ funk ("Steady Love"). In "Smell of Coffee", Greg paints a vivid minimalist picture, with just a few sharply defined strokes. In "Telling Stories", Greg does what Greg does best: conjures up a time, place and feel so real we can all drop by for a rest. For that, we thank him.

Ok service.......2007-01-05
came a day or 2 longer that I expected but not too bad
Ethereal.......2001-03-21
This collection is a must, even if you previously thought you had no
particular taste for traditional Japanese music. The melodies are
placid and contemplative. Ideal for reflective moments, or to
relax. I'm motivated to try more of Rampal's Japanese
recordings.
While Rampal gets top billing, Laskine on the harp is
just as prominent, and as excellent, in performing these works. The
playing time of the CD (sadly, only a modest 44 minutes) is about
equal measures solo flute, solo harp and harp/flute duet. The same
performances on this CD also are available on Sony catalogue #34568,
"Japanese Melodies for Flute and Harp." The tradeoff is that
this Denon CD costs ... less, but the Sony-labelled product has one
more track, Haru No Umi (track 1 thereon, for an extra 7
minutes).
As many readers will know, CBS sold its record labels to
Sony back in the '90s, I believe when they were acquired by
Westinghouse. While the vast majority of the old CBS/Columbia
recordings have been repackaged under the Sony label (see especially
the budget priced Sony Essential Classics series that's chock full of
gems), the CBS and Columbia marques also are still used by
Sony. Sometimes the same recordings are sold simultaneously under
these various labels, albeit with different pairings and cover
art. Most confusing. Here's more. The Denon label, under which this CD
is published, is an alias of Columbia Records Japan. Whether this
ultimately is owned by Sony as well these days, I do not know. The
point is that you should find a number of the same performances
packaged under Denon that you can get under Sony, CBS or Columbia.
