Customer Reviews:
Start Here.......2007-02-12
Don Byas played and recorded with musicians of varying abilities, so it can be difficult finding collections that are consistantly up to my expectations when I think of Byas. Some of the highlights of the rhythm sections on these disks include Slam Stewart and Eddie Saafranski on bass, Denzil Best and Sid Catlett on drums, and Johnny Guarnieri and Errol Garner on piano. But there are quite a few lesser known players here. But there is a lot of good to great Byas, and that's where the value of this collection lies.
The dates for these 4 disks are very focused: between 1944 - 1946.
There are a few tracks that don't seem to fit with the rest, (the 3 tracks featuring the blues singing of Albinia Jones stick out from the rest of the collection), but you get a lot of great tunes, with good sound, and great blowing by Byas.
The repertoire is also really good... from ballads to Cherokee.
Besides the wonderful playing by Byas and the repertoire, this set also has a good sampling of Slam Stewart's overflowing musicality. Even if you're not a fan of Slam's vocalizing with his arco, you can't deny the magical chemistry between Slam and Byas.
I like this 4 CD set a little better than the 3 disk set also by Discoforme. Also recommended is the strangely titled album "A Tribute to Cannonball", featuring Bud Powell, Don Byas, and Kenny Clarke. (The record date was produced by Cannonball Adderly, who plays on an alternate take of Cherokee.)
