Count Basie's band endured because of its leader's uncanny ability to put together fresh arrangements and strong soloists while maintaining the band's unique devotion to swing; this CD is among the most enduring of the big band recordings of the 1950s. The title tune is present in a justifiably famous rendition, a performance of swaggering swing and passion that was arranged by organist "Wild Bill" Davis. Frank Foster's "Shiny Stockings," now a jazz standard, made its debut here, while Joe Newman's "Midgets" recasts the band as a bop combo. Throughout the recording are terrific solos by trumpeters Thad Jones and Newman and tenor saxophonists Foster and Frank Wess, all basking in the band's glorious swing. --Stuart Broomer

a milestone.......2007-05-05
"April in Paris", a landmark album worthy of its acclaim, is a benchmark recording in the Count Basie catalog for a number of reasons. The album marks the return of Count Basie to the big band scene, with some new players and tunes that knocked the socks off of audiences everywhere. The elegantly robust opener on this 1956 release for Verve is a forever famous one, a standard that continues being played even today. "Corner Pocket" is almost as celebrated as the previous title track, with sections of musicality that are so sweeping listeners will find themselves pleasantly lost for a few moments.
"Didn't You?" is an impressive number chased by the whole gang, sure to get everyone swinging and tapping them toes. Basie opens things up for us with a saunter on "Sweetie Cakes", with horns and strings in hot pursuit of his lead. Skip ahead to "Shiny Stockings" to invoke that feeling of yesterday, where cats like Basie reigned supreme on stage. This 20-bit digital transfer from the Verve master edition, complete with bonus alternate takes and new liner notes, is a must own for the serious jazz collector.
Personnel:
Count Basie (piano), Joe Newman (trumpet, arrangements), Wendell Culley, Reunald Jones, Thad Jones (trumpets), Henry Coker, Bill Hughes, Benny Powell (trombone), Marshall Royal (clarinet, alto sax), Bill Graham (alto sax), Frank Wess (flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, arrangements), Frank Foster (tenor sax, clarinet, arrangements), Charlie Fowlkes (baritone sax), Freddie Green (guitar, arrangements), Eddie Jones (bass), Sonny Payne (drums), Jose Mangual and Ubaldo Bieto (percussions).
Original Producer: Norman Granz
Total Time: 68:06
Date: July 1955 and January 1956
20-bit high resolution digital transfer
Good outtakes.......2001-12-18
This is one of the few discs where the outtakes are worthwhile. Usually, the differences are minor, and often I have trouble distinguishing one take from another. But here, they reveal Basie's re-working of some of the cuts at a basic level. The three takes of "Magic", for example, display radically different approaches to the piano intro. Of course, even without the outtakes, this is one of the highpoints of Basie's career anyway.
Pure bliss.......2001-10-23
This is some of the finest Basie in his mid-to-late period.
Very difficult to review........2001-07-04
I had a very tough time trying to decide how to rate this. On the one hand, it's something of a jazz classic, and probably the most famous of Basie's albums. On the other hand, the album is not his best. I've owned this album for a while, and although I have more Basie CDs than anything else, I just don't listen to this one that much.
For one thing, only the title track is really essential. I love "Shiny Stockings," but there is a much better version on "Basie in London." Some other favorites ("Corner Pocket," Sweetie Cakes") sound much better on the live "Corner Pocket" album. If you are a big Basie fan, I suggest you check out a few of the live albums, as Basie is ALWAYS better live. If you're a part-time jazz fan, or want an introduction, this may be for you.
To sum it up, I guess I'd say this. If you don't know Basie, this is a good place to start. If you DO know Basie, and still don't have this CD, you probably would be disappointed. I would rate this closer to 3 stars, but it does have appeal to new fans.
"One More Once!".......2001-06-09
April in Paris is one of those CDs you just never get tired of; like many jazz hallmarks, it invites, insists on repeat play. From the shimmering fountain of brass at the start of the famous "April in Paris" through the last scream of the Neal Hefti's jumping "Dinner with Friends," it's just irresistible fun. Standouts include Basie's trickling notes in the smooth vamp of "Sweetie Cakes;" Thad Jones' and Joe Newman's trumpets on "Corner Pocket" (the former quoting "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White," no less!); the conga-lining, hip-slinging pep of "Mambo Inn," in a dynamic arrangement; the dizzying and hilarious melody of "Midgets;" and Frank Foster's bluesy "Magic," which should have become a standard. This, along with the Atomic Swing CD, is Basie New Testament at its best. Enhancing things is the addition of some wonderful alternate takes, which include a less-than-stellar "Midgets," "April in Paris" with a trumpet in front of the band, and count 'em--TWO different takes of "Magic." The fun thing is that there must have been some dispute over the speed, because of the three versions on this disc, each has a distinctly different tempo, decreasing in speed each time. Also, Basie's opening solos become more intricate with each take. No version is better or worse; in fact, they complement each other. The remastered sound on the disc is excellent; the band sounds full, robust, and lively, and the solos fly straight into your face. Verve hit a homer with this one, and it's definitely worth a listen.

Customer Reviews:
A Long Awaited "Gem".......2007-07-09
My LP of this show was totally worn out, so I'm absolutely delighted to have this on such a great sounding CD. Davis is right up there with other musical luminaries such as Hepburn in COCO and Bacall in WOMAN OF THE YEAR and APPLAUSE. All three were non-singers who acted, and their recordings are really just a joy to have to offset soprani like Cook, Chenowith, and Lukker.
This really is a must have recording for any true musical comedy lover who wants the unusual and historical. Davis's "Turn Me Loose on Broadway" is wonderful from her "Mistah conductah, iff You Pleeees" to her slightly off tempo "hey" in the dance break. Davis did try to sing several times through her career. Frank Loesser's "They're Either Too Young or Too Old" has been on a few collections, and there was that failed musical version of THE CORN IS GREEN entitled MISS MOFFAT that closed in Philadelphia. Betty Davis wasn't a good singer, but she tried!
The supporting cast is excellent, and I think it's just a joy to hear an old-school musical by one of the forgotten greats, Vernon Duke. That's why I'm really pleased to have the Duke bonus tracks on the CD as well. It's a great value with Davis, Duke, and Lawrence Welk and his orchestra as well. The album was coveted for years, and it's just wonderful to have it in better sound than it ever was.
Bette Davis in a musical...yes, you heard right.......2006-10-05
Bette Davis in a musical? In 1952, when her film career started on yet another downward spiral and she was unceremoniously labelled as "box office poison", the legendary Ms Davis decided to do the unthinkable, and made her Broadway musical debut in TWO'S COMPANY, a fluffy little revue that would have certainly folded a lot quicker if a mega-watt star like Davis was not in the starring role.
TWO'S COMPANY ran on the box office power of Davis, and the moment she became ill and started missing performances, the closing notices were posted (the show limped along for 90 performances). Nevertheless, this curious jewel of a show was recorded, and now gets it's CD premiere thanks to British boutique label Sepia.
Apparently, Davis was so embarrased by her performance, that she attempted to buy every single copy of the original LP in order to destroy them. One can just imagine Davis (in full Margo Channing mode) swaggering into a record store and slamming a pile of TWO'S COMPANY albums onto the sales counter ("don't bother to wrap `em!").
While Davis was never a singer, she croaks out her songs quite well, and what she lacks in musicality she compensates with comedy and sheer brio.
Performing the more demanding material is Ellen Hanley, known to musical fans for her Tony-winning role as Thea in "Fiorello!"; as well as Adrianna in the 1963 Off-Broadway revival of "The Boys from Syracuse", and replacing Polly Bergen in "First Impressions" (the Jane Austen/'Pride & Prejudice' musical of 1959).
Sepia's remaster of the TWO'S COMPANY album (taken from original 78's) is quite crisp and clean, with some slight hiss and sonic wobble in certain areas (like towards the end of "Haunted Hot Spot"), although we are lucky to have this title on disc in the first place.
Known for their copious bonus tracks, Sepia do not disappoint, and the TWO'S COMPANY disc is filled out with extensive supplementaries (Nancy Walker singing "I Can't Get Started" and Jack Smith with "I'm Gonna Ring the Bell Tonight"); and a whole "Vernon Duke plays Vernon Duke" section.
Now that TWO'S COMPANY has been released on compact disc, we can finally hear what all the fuss was about.

The line between evangelist and entertainer has always been somewhat indistinct. But as showcased on this 43-track, double-disc collection culled from his '87-'96 recordings for Elektra/Nonesuch/Atlantic, Michael Feinstein's dedication to spreading the gospel of the American song often blurs it beyond recognition. While the singer's pedigree for the task is impeccable (a long-term stint as Ira Gershwin's assistant and early career sponsorship by Liza Minnelli), his interpretations often succeed by playing off a tense axis of fervent emotionalism and a joyous sense of irreverence.
If his readings of romantic standards can sometimes tend toward the precious, they're often balanced here by sheer dramatic power and telling insights ("Isn't It Romantic" fairly bristles with ironic chauvinism) and a few loopy curves ("The Mole People," the Sherman Brothers' "The Ugly Bug Ball," and the previously unreleased "Rhode Island Is Famous for You"). Feinstein's dedicated song archaeology is also showcased on several gems: "Violin," a duet with Liza Minnelli; "My Favorite Year," a rejected ballad for the film of that name; the sublime "lost" Gershwin classic "Ask Me Again."
Sprinkled with live performances (the forum where Feinstein's talents seem most energized) and studio outtakes and featuring a lengthy print interview with the singer, the set chronicles both the pioneering efforts of one of pop music's most successful revivalists and, crucially, the cream of his beloved American songwriters, from stalwarts Gershwin, Berlin, and Porter to later legends like Herman, Styne, Lane, Martin, and Mercer. --Jerry McCulley

Customer Reviews:
Mixed feelings.......2005-10-05
This album has some GREAT songs on it; sophisticated swing being one of my favorites. However many of the other songs are too operatic and lame. I give three stars but this album is definatly worth it just for some of the better songs.
Your love for this superb collection will be here to stay..........2002-07-18
The magnificently talented Michael Feinstein has made one wonderful album after another for nearly two decades. Now that Elektra and Rhino have put together this anthology, I am blown away by the versatility and diversity in Feinstein's recorded output. Such amazing rare gems, combined with the most beloved favorites in the history of American Popular Song. Assembled with wit, intelligence, and obvious affection on the part of the record company, this set is a keeper. You'll love it!
He's done it again.......2002-07-15
Is there anything this man can't sing? This collection is so varied as to be the definitive collection of songs for any occassion.
This is perfect background music for a dinner party for a whole group but especially for two. Light, romantic and just gorgeous. You just can't go wrong when Michael Feinstein is your musical choice.
Way to go Michael, you've done it again!
Absolutely 'S WONDERFUL!.......2002-06-10
There are very few contemporary performers who can hold their own with the truly great interpreters of American popular song. Michael Feinstein is truly the ONLY performer of the "younger" generation who really understands what these songs are all about. His incredible knowledge of this music, and his enthusiasm and passion for it have fueled his career. Rhino Records has done a truly outstanding job of putting together an anthology that exemplifies why Mr. Feinstein has become so beloved by audiences around the world. The packaging is excellent, and filled with interesting photos and background information about many of the selections.
This collection not only contains all the favorites one would expect, but a neat group of surprises too. I especially love the duets with people like Liza Minnelli and Rosemary Clooney, and the various collaborative efforts with songwriters like Jule Styne and Burton Lane accompanying Michael at the piano.
This collection is a classic to be treasured. Bravo Michael!
Bravo Rhino!
A beautiful 2 disc CD-another hit for Michael.......2002-06-09
I have every CD Michael has ever made and this is by far one of the best ones because of Michael's range in singing and his wonderful singing voice. I love his duets with Rosemary Clooney and Liza Minelli. He is a wonderful performer on this double CD and am looking foward to the next CD.

She's got to be kidding..............2006-10-12
If you need to cover something, then do it your own way.EXPRESS YOURSELF!
I dont know why anybody would want to listen to this record when you can have " the real thing " (and plenty of it!).
For you guys who like this record,be prepared to be blown away.
" FRANCE GALL "... is the name which will keep you addicted for a long time.
Just listen to the original " Laisse Tomber Les Filles " (or infact anything from her sixties stuff),and then you'll know what I mean.
Sorry April,but 3* for trying.
The choice is yours.
a bit much, no?.......2004-02-10
i was excited to get this after i heard "chick habit" in the movie "But I'm a Cheerleader". this album is fun for a while, but her overly high, girly voice starts to grate your ears after a while. also, over half of it is in French, so there are repeats of most of the songs(one in English, one French) which is why it's so easily tiresome. if i could have, i would have just got the single.
ooh la la.......2000-01-18
Fans of Ms. March's *Chrominance Decoder* should check out this earlier work. Some of the tunes come from her *Chick Habit* EP, such as the title track and its French equivalent "Laisse Tomber les Filles." Of course, any 90s retro chanteuse must include at least one Serge Gainsbourg number ("Chez les Yeye" and, in English, "The Land of Go"). While this musical bilingualism gets kind of repetitive on a short album (34 minutes), Ms. March has enough flair and wit to make *Paris in April* a swinging good time. Gogo!

Customer Reviews:
Doris Day - Rare Recordings - Superb Quality.......2005-10-11
This CD is quite outstanding for two reasons - Superb Quality and the rarity of many of the recordings.
The "Lucky Me" selections appear to be soundtrack recordings. The other film selections are from separate studio sessions.
Recommended. Buy this one while you can - it is a bargain.
dissapointed.......2004-10-20
while I was excited to see a soundtrack for "Young at Heart", I was sorry to see it coupled with some of Doris Day's lesser desirable movie soundtracks. Still for the avid collector this should help complete a collection. The biggest dissapointment was that the songs from "Young at Heart" are not the actual songs recorded from the movie. The arrangements differ and Sinatra's numbers were not backed by an orchestra in the movie.still I guess this was what was released at the time as a soundtrack. Too bad.

Customer Reviews:
"Richard Alden", best of the best!.......2006-10-15
I bougth this CD only for the track #8, from my Fair Lady "I've grown accustomed to her face", played, arranged and directed by Richard Alden, the same Ronnie Aldrich. The arrange has a little more rithm than the version of Phase 4 Stereo in "The magic moods of Ronnie Aldrich". It sounds spectacular!
The CDs from Readers Digest have some themes from Ronnie and "Richard Alden", inedits and a treasures for who loves the music of that genius od the piano
The rest of the CD has pretty songs.
