Unlike the huge names, collections by Allen are not many - plenty of his opera performances are recorded, but there are only a few collections. My voice teacher recommended I listen to him to understand better how to deliver power without weight, something we've been working on. Yes, it's all in English, but that's fine, and the quality of Allen's instrument comes through very well.

Sir Thomas Allen is one of the enduring baritones who has been able to move throughout the operatic repertoire and the recital stage with intelligence, informed characterization, and immaculate musicianship. To have a recording of some of the roles he has inhabited at this point in his career is a gift (this CD was recorded in 2003). To have the added challenge of retaining the stature of the roles while sung in English translations at the request of Chandos is a credit to his abilities and communicative powers.

English is a difficult language to make musical, though saying that abruptly is countered by the fact that some of the most beautiful operas in history are by Benjamin Britten, a composer who truly understood his native tongue and kept it as fluid as the soaring melodies he wrote, as Thomas Allen proves here in 'Billy in the Darbies' from Britten's 'Billy Budd'. It is the other major arias from Korngold to Wagner to Tchaikovsky to Rossini, Bizet, Mozart, Gounod, Verdi, Thomas, Strauss, and Lehar that Allen proves that English translations do not detract at all from the performances!

For those purists who prefer opera sung in the original language (and for those who don't even need supertitles in the opera house!), then this recording may provide a temporary barrier to respecting Allen's singing. But once caught up in the ease with which he moves from style to style and comedy to drama, it is hard not to relinquish old preferences and not be wholly impressed with the beauty of the voice and the warmth and dignity of this fine musician. For me, the test here was Figaro's Cavatina, from Rossini's Barber of Seville - sung in English, as is this entire compilation of 14 operatic favorites, sung by baritone Sir Thomas Allen. Could he pull it off? Could Chandos pull it off? The answer is an unequivocal, unqualified yes! The secret in singing classics in English, that were written and scored in another language, is in three things: pacing, vocal agility and appreciation for "fit", and what greater test for tongue and timing than Figaro? When you listen to this one song, you will understand why Chandos and its benefactor, Sir Peter Moores have such a passion for their Opera in English series. Sir Allen's voice is a matured unmistakably settled baritone voice that contains a lifetime's worth of understanding of the music and words he imparts through his magnificent delivery. For example, when he sings, Tchaikovsky's "You have my love and devotion" from The Queen of Spades, he delivers a smooth and deeply emotional rendition that lacks nothing in translation. Wagner's "Turning my gaze upon this proud assembly", from Tannhäuser is another example of how fine, full orchestration behind a seasoned voice that waxes eloquent with every phrase, can create a mood of relaxed familiarity with word and music, that may be lacking when sung in another tongue. Great Operatic Arias, serves up a smorgasbord of tunes that are familiar, made more so by the care and attention given to creating a place for the Opera in English series in every home library. The mood here is romantic, relaxed and with few exceptions consistent throughout. If you haven't heard Opera in English, this might be a good way to start, given the fact that the listener gets to sample how different composers might sound in other than German, Italian or French. You might be surprised to discover that when done with care, as is obviously the case here, the sound is about as good as it gets. As an added bonus, the booklet that comes with the CD is full of pictures, libretto in English, and biography that gives us a good insight into history of the singer and his identifying rolls.

I find less to criticize than others in this music and performance. If you know MacDowell, you know the kinds of things to expect from these songs. Not great music, but still beautiful genteel songs. MacDowell lets the lyricism flow smoothly. Most of the songs float along in the 6/8 rhythm MacDowell used so often. Concentrating on the melodic line, some of the occasional awkwardly thorny harmonies you can find in his miniatures fade into the background. Indeed, some may think the piano is too far in the background here. Too bad, because the late James Barbagallo obviously had quite a gift for MacDowell interpretation. Check out his recordings of MacDowell's solo piano works. What of tenor Tharp? Some may find his voice a little too thin, with a bit too much vibrato. But I say the songs are well sung regardless. Maybe the problem is that the songs really required a woman's voice. But what's done is done. These complete songs needed to be recorded, and this performance quite adequate, reservations notwithstanding. Over all, I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this recording.

I'm sorry to have to say it, but this recording contains music that is undistinguished in performances that are competent only. The music is Grieg-and-water. The American tenor's voice is light-weight and charmless. The pianist is excellent. You can't beat the price, though, if you really want to hear this repertoire.

For over 10 years, The VocalEssence Ensemble Singers and Chorus (conducted by Philip Brunelle) has presented an enduring series of concerts showcasing the talents of trailblazing African American composers. Now this wealth of music is available outside the concert hall through a series of recordings called WITNESS.

DANCE LIKE THE WIND presents works by eight African American composers from various generations, though they all emerged after the neo-classical period of non-discrimination. You'll hear loyalty to classic idioms like the spirituals and blues, but also elements of more recent genres like R&B, gospel and rap. Enclosed are excellent liner notes and biographical information.

        I was hooked!! This guy have a damn good voice! He takes you with him in every song!!! I can't stop listening too the songs! I'm a HUGE DJ fan and I would recomend any of DJ's CD's to anyone!! Just try it, it's realy GOOD!!! DON, keep up the good work and thank you for the music!!

        This CD has alot of great qualities about it. I don't like to make comparisons, but it's got a real cool Doors vibe to it. I think that comes from the rich vocals. The arrangements have a lot to sink your teeth into. And the songwriting...the words and lyrics form a perfect union. It's definitely filled with great images and, most important to me, it has a poetic nature to it, but it never gets artsy, it's always conversational, very human.

        Not only does the artist, Don Johnson, keep getting better, but this CD keeps getting better the more I listen to it! It's easy to hit "repeat" when the variety of musical styles and the depth of the lyrics delivers something fresh & new with each play.
        The production and the band's performance is fantastic! The producer seems to have struck just the right balance of showing off the obvious talent in the band, making the music interesting in and of itself, and supporting/enhancing the lyrics.
        Finally, I really admire the courage in the songwriting. Clearly, Don is sharing with his audience some of his own personal path, and when I listen to his music, I feel like he allows me to join him on that for a little while...

        I recently had the opportunity to experience some new sounds, from Don Johnson. This CD offered such a variety of sounds and emotions. There appears to be a wealth of talent within the members involved in this CD. I found the music very soothing and very inspirational. During the times we are all experiencing I found listening was a great escape. Each time I listen I seem to hear more then I did the previous time. I find myself humming and singing "Slippin through the Shadows" What a great song!! There is so much feeling that comes through the words of Don Johnson. The words have brought joy and tears to me. The voices and all the instruments make each song very rich and very unique. I hope to see more from this artist in the near future. I will be looking.

        I don't who this don johnson guy is, but I like what he is doing...poetic lyrics, powerful imagery and great songwriting.

        I heard a few tunes on his website..."Goodbye" a slow blues tune, with haunting lyrics, moaning harmonicas, banjo back in the mix..sounds like the Doors on the someone's back porch.

        The other song on the website, is an uptempo ska tune..that just rocks...great rhythm section, great vocals and guitar work...

        I listen to alot of music and something tells me this guy can write good songs. Nice to hear some new singer songwriter music that isn't just acoustic guitars...this guy has a full band with him and they seem to perform different styles...
