In the world of athletics, a veteran's poise and experience will only take him as far as his physical skills will allow, but jazz musicians can compensate for diminished dexterity (if any) through intelligence, conviction, and depth. Alto Phil Woods, tenor Johnny Griffin, pianist Cedar Walton, and drummer Ben Riley were all "young lions" of hard bop in the 1950s, and with (relatively) young bassist Peter Washington, they've got wisdom to spare. It's hard to believe that it took until 1998 for Woods to make his Blue Note debut as a leader, but he's clearly inspired by the esteemed company. Woods unearths "I'm So Scared of Girls When They're Good Looking" and delivers a solo that's both passionate and playful. Griffin's reading of Ellington's "All Too Soon" adds a bit of grit to the tenderness. All team for a gorgeous version of Woods's original "Dutch Morning." Jazz is indeed the rare sport in which the growth of the players can be limitless and the old-timers can give the current all-stars a serious run. --Marc Greilsamer

4 out of 5 stars I'm not a music expert.......2005-08-25

I don't know too much about music. I own over 700 cds, but I don't play music and I don't have much experience with this music. My only point of reference was the ninth symphony, seeing as every other piece in this box set was new to me. It sounds fine, nothing wrong with it as far as I can see.

Now, here's what you'll get in this box set, seeing as Amazon does not give it a description. 40 cds! no joke, you get 40 cds in this box set. It features:
1. Complete symphonies
2. Complete symphonic poems
3. Cello concerto
4. Piano concerto
5. Violin concerto
6. Requiem
7. Stabat Mater
8. Slavonic Dances
9. Complete String quartets
10. Chamber music
11. Piano Works (solo and duet)
12. Rusalka

As far as I can tell, the only things missing are The Spectre's Bride and Jacobin. Seeing as it is 40 cds, i have not had an opportunity to listen to it, however what i have heard i have been quite satisfied with.

5 out of 5 stars This is what gospel is all about.......2006-03-24

James Cleveland sings from deep within his soul, backed up by a passionate group of worshippers. His anthem "I Don't Feel Noways Tired" is a sermon in itself, "He didn't bring me this far just to leave me...!" and should be repeated by every Christian. Those times of discouragement would be put into perspective. The whole CD has songs with a cleaner, simpler feel of traditional gospel, the kind I used to hear in the storefront churches in early 50's Brooklyn, no over-synthed productions, just great piano, organ, drums, and conviction.

5 out of 5 stars JAMES IS THE BEST.......2005-10-25

I NEVER THOUGHT THAT HIS MUSIC WOULD BLESS MY LIFE LIKE THIS BEFORE. I LOVE THIS CD. THIS IS THE BEST IN THE WORLD. JAMES IS THE BEST GOSPEL SINGER IN THE UNIVERSE. THIS CD IS JUST AWESOME. WHEN EVER YOU HEAR A JAMES CLEVELAND SONG YOU GET BLESS AND THIS CD DOES THAT FOR ME. I LOVE IT. IF YOU DONT HAVE THIS ONE YOU NEED TO GET. ITS JAMES CLEVELAND SO YOU KNOW THAT YOU ARE GETTING YOUR MONEYS WORTH.

4 out of 5 stars Brings Back Memories.......2005-02-03

My father has been gone now for over 20 years. There are times when I find it hard to connect with his memory. When I listen to James Cleveland it makes it seem like we were together just yesterday. If one can find a better gospel song than Victory Shall Be Mine please let me know because I haven't heard it yet. My ususal taste for music leans toward Beethoven but James Cleveland stirs the soul. You cannot go wrong in purchasing any music by this man.

5 out of 5 stars I DON'T FEEL NO WAYS TIRED.......2002-04-23

HIGHLY RECOMMEND
THE CD IS WONDERFUL. I LOVE THE TRACK NUMBER 2, IT'S WONDERFUL TO HEAR MUSIC THAT HAS A MESSAGES WORTH HEARING.

5 out of 5 stars A LEGEND PRESENTS HIS PROTEGE.......2000-07-19

The late Reverend James Cleveland not exercise his gift of musical talent, but he allowed the HOLY SPIRIT to used his gift in Reverend Cleveland`s presentation of Minister Keith Pringle when singing the title song "I Don`t Feel No Way's Tired" You can not listen to this cd and keep still. It will move you out of your seat. Also, included on this cd Reverend Cleveland and Minister Pringle united on the hit song "Victory Shall Be Mind". Purchasing this cd will be no mistake. Whether you are music lover or not listening to this recording will be a learning experience. Pastor J.C. Wade and the Salem Mass Choir of Salem Missionary Baptist Church, Omaha,Nebraska did an outstanding job singing background in this live recording taped at Salem Missionary Baptist Church in that city.I Know you will enjoy this recording.

    Album Description

Bobby Hart and Tommy Boyce were popmeisters who wrote songs for the early Phil Spector productions among many others, but perhaps their best known project was The Monkees! .Turned down for roles early in the auditions, they landed the perhaps more artistically satisfying and lucrative roles as writer/producers for the music content of the show. Indeed, it was their own band, The Candy Store Prophets, who ghosted for The Monkees on their early sessions, including all the early hits and successful album tracks.

5 out of 5 stars UNSUNG HEROINE OF THE 70'S RENEWED!.......2007-04-04

I have been into this great lady since first hearing her with Art and James. Her great background vocals and counter melodies always made their songs special. What a treat to see her get her shot at a solo career. Finding out she was the great Mama Cass Elliot's younger sister was just icing on the cake. Alas, like so many great artists of that time period, she was all but ignored by the PUNK revolution. Had sshe been there just a few years earlier, I am sure she would've been enjoying the sucess of Linda Ronstadt, Carly Simon, Joni Mitchell, Carol King and others. My personal favorite is "Step Right Up" which gives a contempory feel to something her sister might have done. "Run With Trouble" has you believing this lady really lived through some rough moments. Check out her new CD THE COYOTE SISTERS, "Women and Other Visions" Available here at Amazon. Also if you need a good lawyer, she is one of those too. Truly a remarkable woman!

4 out of 5 stars Just to add..........2007-01-22

I just wanted to add one item the the reviewer's list of credit's for Leah Kunkel - she sings the 'counter song' on Jackson Browne's "From Silver Lake". So if you have "Saturate Before Using", you already have Leah in your collection.

Sorry to hear that this is "from vinyl"...but I'm buying it anyway!

4 out of 5 stars Remastered... from VINYL :-(.......2006-08-31

I have been waiting for the release of this music on CD for 25 years and was thrilled to see it was coming out as a 2-for-1 CD. I just received it today and while I am happy to have these tunes in digital format, I am also disappointed because, even though the CD was co-produced and annotated by Leah herself (practically a neighbor of mine in Massachusetts), the original master tapes must still be locked in the Sony vaults, since the "remastering" has been done from mint vinyl albums. The re-creation of the sound is quite good and there are no noticeable drop-outs or pops, any listener with headphones will be able to tell that this vinyl copy was the only audio source available to the producing team. I spent a good amount of money to obtain a (now) very rare Japanese original SONY CD of the first album (Leah Kunkel) that was issued a while back but went immediately out of print, as is often the case with these catalogue re-issues. Comparing the sound quality from that CD to the version on this most recent one gave me a pretty good idea of how well the engineers worked to make the vinyl sound good but it is clear, especially in the vocals and the distorted rendition of the sibilants (s-sounds), that this long-awaited and wonderful music still needs its definitive digital version to be issued at some point, with the assistance of the owners of the original master tapes at Sony/Columbia. Mind you, this is better than chasing down the super-rare vinyl LPs for exorbitant prices, and having these 20 tracks available on CD is long overdue, but we still have to petition the powers that be to give Leah Kunkel the royal treatment she deserves and release the REAL version "remastered from the original master tapes" on CD for all of her fans to enjoy!

    5 out of 5 stars A Pleasant Surprise!.......2006-08-10

I'd heard of Leah (Cohen) Kunkel for years,....having loved her sister's (Cass Elliot) music, and had seen her in many photos with her sister over the years. I knew she married drummer and musician Russ Kunkel, she was a recognized session singer, and she had written some beautiful music, but never had access to it.
Had hoped to link up with some of the music from her group (The Canyon Sisters?), but could never find any. So the release of not one but two of her solo efforts on one cd was a treat for me!
For those of you who loved Cass Elliot, you can detect a similar vocal quality with Leah's voice, but there's a deeper texture in her voice,....more of a blues and jazz quality.....lending itself more to ballads and other types of music besides pop, though she can sing pop as well.
Leah Kunkel's music stands up well over time. For the life of me, I don't understand why Leah and her music did not score big in the late 70's and early 80's when the albums were released. ....a shame,.....but am enjoying the music now. Have only listened to the cd twice so far,.....am looking to more.
Would like to be able to find some of her group work.....and some things she might be doing presently,.....if she's still recording. Can't go wrong with this purchase!

Saints and Friends, if you've ever been down and hated everyone around, listen to "I Won't Complain". I bought the CD after hearing the extended version not knowing the artist is no longer w/us. Although this song is popular during anniversaries and district meetings, you've NEVER heard it like Brother Jones does it here! When you play this song everyone notices and reacts because it's simply awe-some. This is preachin-singin at its finest, right up there w/Bruce Parham and Bishop Ronald Brown. Sadly, the other selections on the CD are subpar at best due to poor recording quality but still, repeat "I Won't Complain" and let it minister to you. May the Lord bless all who hear this CD.

    Amazon.com essential recording

Barber's Knoxville, Summer of 1915 is a setting of a lovely chunk of prose text by James Agee describing an evening from his childhood. An accomplished singer himself, Barber's vocal writing is expert, and this work must rank as one of the finest examples of the art of word-setting in any language. Barber perfectly captures the conversational quality of the text, while at the same time clothing the words in an atmosphere of gentle nostalgia. It's a masterpiece that Dawn Upshaw sings with keen insight and lovely tone. The remainder of the program is creatively chosen as well, making this one of the finest vocal recitals available by an American singer. --David Hurwitz

    Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars Excellent Material for Ms. Upshaw........2006-04-26

'Knoxville: Summer of 1915' is a performance of a selection of operatic pieces by Americans such as Samuel Barber or Europeans transplanted to the United States, such as Igor Stravinsky. Ms. Upshaw shines with material, which is good for her, since she is just slightly out of her league with the material covered by the likes of Renee Flemming on the operatic front and Ute Lemper and Lotte Lenya on the Euro/American popular musical stage.

Like any good sampler, this recording's strongest draw is the fact that it makes one interested in tracking down the complete works by Barber, Menotti, Harbison, and Stravinsky. And, while the package includes all lyrics, everything is in perfectly clear English. A perfect addition to other American classics such as 'Porgy and Bess'.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps Getting Better.......2005-03-02

I have had this disc for years, and I'm more impressed with it as the years roll by. I bought it for Barber's "Knoxville, Summer of 1915" which is a glorious piece of music caught here in a luminous performance. I didn't initially warm up to the Harbison songs, but they have grown on me over the years to the point that I listen to them far more often than the Barber now. I think it just took me a while to absorb Harbison's style and understand how deftly and ingeniously he uses it to take the listener into Mirabai's world. Not to be missed!

5 out of 5 stars The Barber alone is worth five stars.......2004-01-16

People are always saying that they find a particular piece of music is "haunting." For me Barber's "Knoxville: Summer of 1915" is such a work. Dawn Upshaw's reading of this great American masterwork is the best I have yet heard. She won her first Grammy Award for this recording - and deservedly so. If you're a fan of either Upshaw or Barber you'll want to add this beautiful CD to your collection.

5 out of 5 stars Buy this disc...twice!.......2002-07-20

Extraordinary!! This has got to be the definitive Knoxville--rich, touching, elegant and as close to perfect as it can probably ever be. Upshaw has the perfect voice for this work, and she gives it all the loving attention that it requires. This is a performance of Knoxville that will make you weak in the knees. For the Knoxville alone, buy this disc....twice! There is, however, just a little bit of downside here. The other works on this disc just aren't very captivating.

5 out of 5 stars Dawn Upshaw, vocal actress extraordinaire.......2002-01-01

This is the CD that made me fall in love with Dawn Upshaw's singing. I had heard her before and admired her work, but this disc made me a real fan. As it's one of her early recordings, her voice is somewhat "fuller" than on later work; she later started moving the voice "forward," simplifying the sound. Either way, her immense talent for communicating the essence of the text is the outstanding aspect of all her work. It's amazing how she can sound angry, desperate, hopeful, melancholic, all while producing a beautiful sound and tackling all the vocal challenges of the music she's singing. She inhabits the characters, the narrators, of each of the pieces on this disc, and makes it more than just a collection of songs or arias.

I want to make special mention of the Harbison _Mirabai Songs_, as it seems to have been maligned somewhat in other reviews here. This was the work that most kept me coming back to this disc when I first bought it. I think it is a masterpiece, and one of Harbison's best and most important works. (Apparently I'm not alone in my admiration of the piece, because I've heard it on a number of live concerts in recent years, so it seems to be having a successful performance life.) Harbison's song cycle is by turns exciting, sensual, driving, longing, beautiful. The orchestration for the small ensemble is masterful (as Harbison's efforts at scoring always are), and Upshaw expresses all of Mirabai's complex emotions enchantingly.

The _Rake's Progress_ aria also deserves individual comment. In this engrossing example of Stravinsky's neoclassical style, Upshaw assumes Anne's air of fierce determination, and brings the disc to an absolutely thrilling climax on a concluding high C.

All of the music on this terrific CD is very accessible, and the performances are stellar. The recorded sound is very clear and immediate, as one would expect from Nonesuch. It's one of my favorite discs in my entire collection, and would probably be so for the Harbison and Stravinsky alone.

I was very pleased with the CD even though it is shorter than the tape. I enjoyed it

      4 out of 5 stars Good Song.......2007-02-10

I bought this album for my boyfriend. He loves the album. It has 6 songs on it, so it's shorter than most. Also, the sound quality is not the best, but apart from that, it's a pretty good album.

      4 out of 5 stars "I won't complain" was cut off........2005-12-30

I ordered the CD just for the song, "I won't complain." Well, I must complain. The song was cut off. I was very disappointed about that. I thought there was something wrong with my stereo, but it had nothing to do with that. The song is much shorter than the original version. If I had known that, I would've continued my search. Other than that, the other songs, which I had never heard before, are really uplifting.

      5 out of 5 stars I Won't Complain.......2004-09-12

This CD is a must-have for lovers of classic gospel. The late Rev. Paul Jones never claimed to have the best singing voice in the world, however he sang from his heart and spirit. The emotion that comes through in each song on this CD will give you goosebumps. In his short life, Rev. Jones was a legend in the Houston area for his version of "I Won't Complain". "Don't Want No Rocks" will bring tears to the eyes of those seeking to mend their relationship with God. Sadly, Rev. Jones was murdered before he had a chance to bless the world with another CD. He lives on through this spirit-filled collection.

this song makes me understand that there are people in this world that are worse off then me. so there for i should have nothing to complain about. when im having a very bad day i use to play this song and cry till i couldn't cry no more and think about all the bad things i have done in my life .and after hearing this song i realize that things ar not as bad as i make them seem. there is a rev. where i am from that sung this song at my grandfathers funeral, and at my great aunts.

      3 out of 5 stars A Disappointing Follow-up to "Peace Be Still".......2002-07-12

If you are looking for an album that sounds like "Peace Be Still," this probably isn't it. This recording lacks a song with the same musical impact as just about anything on the previous record, and is also missing "Peace Be Still"'s swinging percussion.

This isn't a bad record, but it's not a great one either.

5 out of 5 stars my favorite clay evans cd.......2002-08-14

yhis cd is great. i've been playing this cd off and on sinci i first heard it in i think 1995
i have lost it at least 2 times (once it was stolen)and had to buy another
i love this cd it has shun pace singing 'bring it to Jesus' and 'create in me a clean heart' i've played these two songs so many times i can't even count how many

other favorites of mine are 'something about God's grace' and 'save a seat for me' i've played these more than i've played the shun pace songs. if i wasn't scared to sing i would sing 'save a seat for me' in my church.

i feel that this cd would be a jewel in anyone's cd collection that likes traditional gospel music
if you like to here preachers sing it would also be a good pick

This was a great CD. Perhaps I am a wee bit biased as I have other works of the author. It is a very inspirational and motivational work and I highly recommend it to others. Thank you.
