This album is one of my all-time favorites. I have it on vinyl and am anxiously awaiting the CD I ordered.

Johnny Smith is very understated here - but still distinctive. In his style, he does what it takes to make the song perfect. In most cases this means laying back and letting Jeri take the front.

But occasionally there comes a perfect place for Johnny to step out. His solos are clean, efficient and reflect the mood perfectly. He is the consomate musician.

This album is a rare chance to hear Johnny with a singer. And she's so sweet sounding! This album is a treasure.

    Album Description

    Guitarist Johnny Smith's career spans the decades of the 1940s through to the 1990s. From the very beginning of his musical career he influenced the playing of other guitarists. In fact, other guitarists mention Smith almost as often as they mention Charlie Christian as a major influence on their playing. And today players still feel and respond to the influence of Johnny Smith. In the preface to Steve Silverman's 1998 transcriptions of Johnny Smith Guitar Solos he acknowledges that Johnny Smith has been "a source" of inspiration and influence on guitarists as diverse as Pat Martino and Chet Atkins. We include tracks recorded with the likes of Stan Getz, Joe Newman and Zoot Sims, recorded in 1952 and 1953.

    This guy is some kind of freak of nature. From Segovia
    to Hendrix in a single bound. A lot of guys tout
    themselves as versitile, but this guy Morphs (that's what his website charliex.org calls it)into something
    totally different. It's weird but he has a LOT of music
    to express and does every style FULL ON. Nothing is
    watered down here. GREAT songs and a totally new
    thing, but be forwarned: The music on this CD is EXTREME! There
    is no consideration given to fitting in with current
    trends. Charlie X is truly doing his own thing. Some
    of this music is cutting edge (certainly, the artist
    is) but will likely take a good while to be acknowledged for it. The songs range from folk type acoustic (with vocals) to heavy jazz, rock and classical. I've never heard this kind of range from anyone.
