In the decade of decadence, Duran Duran knew how to live the life. It was reflected in their videos (sailboats, silly white hats, tropical surroundings, grease-painted feral women) and garishly displayed in their public lifestyles. But if you can remove these connotations from the album that started it all, you'll be left with music that is anything but gaudy. For the most part, Rio is an eerie and sumptuous record. With their raspy, arpeggio synth sounds and Simon Le Bon's uninflected vocals, the misty ballads "Lonely in Your Nightmare" and "Save a Prayer" can still tear your heart right out of your chest and abandon it bleeding on a rain-soaked cobblestone street. With the dance-oriented singles "Rio" and "Hungry Like the Wolf," you dry out a bit, but the songs are far from airy or whimsical. One anomaly in this release, though, is the inappropriate prominence of John Taylor's bass lines. In every song, it sounds as if he is mixed more in expectation of a solo than as an integral part of the rhythm section. Ignore this technical distraction, however, and you'll enjoy rediscovering this gorgeous body of water-colored synthpop. --Beth Bessmer

The best Duran Duran album by far.......2006-11-10
I was just the right age to be a Duranie - I was 15 during their 1983/1984 US tour - and I threw myself into it with gusto. I used to listen to the first three albums every single day. I still listen to those albums, but this, their second, seems to get on the playlist a bit more often. This is the only one of their albums that I own on vinyl, cassette, and CD, and have burned to extra CDs so I always have it in my car and by my computer. Obsessive? Yep, that's me. But who can resist the haunting beauty of Save a Prayer, the pop-iness of Hungry Like a Wolf and Rio, and the endless riddle of Simon's poetry?
POUND FOR POUND THE BEST........2006-09-08
At a time when several pop/new wave records seemed to have little or no acutal musicianship, "Rio" showed up. This album has a sense of balance and dynamics that forces the listener to hang in there from beginning to end. Huge singles like "Hungry Like the Wolf" and "Save a Prayer" fit seamlessly into a record that could have released any one of its tracks as a single. The production, while more sophisticated than the debut, has a clear rich tone which showcases the real talent this group had. (and still has)
Get it in the collection and enjoy a true gem from the 80's.
This is a great album, better than most music today...so what if it was popular? .......2006-08-07
Duran Duran gets a lot of crap by alternative/New Wave people as being a bunch of pretty boys from the UK who made good. I would prefer to listen to them (specifically this album) because it's damn good music. I love the song Hungry Like the Wolf, and I still play it to death 20 years after it was made. The title track and Save a Prayer are also fabulous songs too. If I had a chance to listen to Duran Duran or crappy indie rock from the 1990's, I'd still take these guys. And their videos were light years better than their contemporaries (and current "rock" stars). Go Simon, Nick, John, Andy, and Roger!
Finally bought the Duran remasters and love them!.......2006-08-03
This is like manna from heaven! Most artists' fanbases would be drooling over the ORIGINAL LP being reissued, complete with original mix. I can't understand the negative reviews. Yeah, it's not the old US version - but this is in my mind what the band themselves originally wanted us to hear. It's incredible and parts sound like a different album. "Hold Back the Rain" has always been my fave on this LP since I was 12 when it came out. I love this mix so much better and am really enjoying this.

Fabulous for any Broadway-lover.......2007-01-30
Packs into 5 CD's a sampling of Broadway tunes from the 20's thru (almost) today, mostly from original cast recordings. Includes not just well-known hits, but also some lesser-known gems. Sound quality is first rate, booklet is informative too. Have given this as a gift to several friends with rave reviews.
Top Shelf.......2007-01-04
This is THE definitive collection of Broadway hits. I have other collections, and none of them measure up. A great deal of care was obviously taken in compiling and presenting this box set. It covers a lot of ground, starting with some long-forgotten but still very enjoyable hits from the days of yore, and finishing with present-day favorites. To the best of my knowledge, the recordings are by those who made them famous. You won't be disappointed.
TERRIFIC CD'S.......2006-03-23
THESE BROADWAY MUSICALS CD'S ARE A BROADWAY LOVERS DREAM. WITH EACH SONG, MEMORIES COME FLOODING BACK. BOTH THE FAMILIAR AND THE FORGOTTEN SONGS ARE A TRUE LISTENING PLEASURE. IF YOU LIKE BROADWAY, YOU'LL LOVE THIS SET.
Great Collection of Broadways greatest Songs .......2005-06-14
This Collection was perfectly made it has almost all the most famous Broadway songs on this 5 cd set. The Music is great and has Broadways greatest treasures like "Memory""People""With One Look""Give my regards Too Broadway" just to name a few of this numerous cd set with over 100 songs. This is a great buy if you like musicals or The music of Broadway
Great Compilation!.......2005-01-17
If you are a fan of the Broadway Musicals, this is a collection that you should purchase. Since I got the 5 disc set I've enjoyed listening to it. The majority of the songs are done by the original singers. The collection is priceless considering that you will have over 100 songs from popular musicals since the beginning of Broadway

Why doesn't my generation have music like this!?.......2005-09-09
I wasn't born yet when this record was released, so I missed out on the Duran Duran heyday. But the other day, I heard this incredible song on the radio called Rio. No doubt in my mind, the best song I've ever heard. Its just utterly perfect in every way! The musicianship is phenominal. John Taylor's killer bassline, combined with Nick Rhodes arpegiated synthesiser riffs created one of the best songs ever. Listening to Duran Duran is like watching a really awesome movie. The songs take you on a musical adventure, you never know what's going to happen next.
A record like this could only come from the 80s. I understand that Rio was a monster hit in the 80s, but if it were released today, it would have flopped big time! Top 40 radio wouldn't touch these guys today. Something this complex would never be a hit in the new millenium. In the 21st century, nobody wants to hear accomplished musicianship, they want cr@p instead! So us poor unfortunate people who were born in the 80s and don't remember them have to suffer through a bunch of bratty, suburban, juvenile delinquent tunes by Green Day or Avril Lavigne every time we turn on a radio! Its just not fair!
Sing Blue Silver.......2005-03-31
I was fortunate to interview Simon LeBon while DD was on the road in America for a tour of club dates after the surprise success of "Girls On Film" in US dance emporiums. He mentioned that he was thrilled to be in New York city and had been writing songs non-stop since the band had arrived. Those inspirations must have been the seeds for the songs that evolved into their second album, "Rio." There is an amazing amount of youthful exuberance to be found throughout this disc's nine songs, and the band plays with confidence that belied "Rio's" sophomore album status.
On this album, Duran Duran hit their stated ambition of mixing the do-it-yourself energy of punk with the dance grooves of Chic. DD's concept of punk may have been rooted more in Bowie and Roxy Music than the MC5, but they were the earliest to transcend the New Wave/New Romantic label and have massive pop hits. "Hungry Like The Wolf" beat like nobody's business, undoubtedly helped by the orgasmic moans of an uncredited female. The video for that song was embraced by MTV and "Rio" became a smash.
Take away that hit, and the rest of "Rio" still comes away as imaginative, melodic and brash. The musicianship was greater than the sum of its parts, as each member locked in flawlessly with the others (and Nick Rhodes keyboards a standout), while Simon LeBon shoots for earnest passion and hits his mark, even when the lyrics are fluffy ("Hold Back The Rain"). The manic dual vocals of "New Religion" were also a highlight, something most bands wouldn't have the maturity to pull off on a second record.
More than 20 years later, "Rio" maintains its vitality, better than many of the "important" bands of the period have. Rio maybe have been dancing across the sand, but for Duran Duran, this solid album was sugar sweet and remains their best work.
A shining example of 80s pop music at its best.......2005-01-29
Duran Duran was perhaps the quintessential 80s pop band, and 1982's "Rio" was the quintessential Duran Duran album. Birmingham, England's "Fab Five" were primarily known for their hit singles and the lavishly produced videos that accompanied them. "Rio" includes some of their very best hits: "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Rio," and "Save a Prayer." But this is more than just a singles album. With "Rio," Duran maintained their New Romantic pop excellence over the course of an entire album. They would produce many more hits throughout the 1980s, but they wouldn't release another full album as strong as "Rio" until 1993's "The Wedding Album."
On "Rio," Duran perfected a formula that they devised on their first album, 1981's "Duran Duran," and would repeat throughout the 1980s: a "side one" of catchy, up-tempo songs and a "side two" of moodier, atmospheric numbers. For those who remember the days of vinyl, "Rio" is truly an album of two perfect sides.
"Side One:" The opening chords of "Rio" explode like crashing ocean waves, with Nick Rhodes' ingenious use of synthesizer arpeggios setting the stylistic tone for the record. The title track's euphoric, eternally memorable chorus is equaled a few songs later by that of "Hungry Like the Wolf," "Rio's" other smash single. "My Own Way," a bigger hit in the UK than in the US, doesn't quite match the catchiness of those two songs, but nowhere else is Simon LeBon's braggadocio so gloriously evident ("I'm on 45!"). "Lonely in your Nightmare" is a lovely, piano-driven midtempo song, while "Hold Back the Rain" is an aggressive, pulsating dance track that spawned endless 12" mixes.
"Side Two:" The ominous intro of "New Religion" segues to a bass-driven groove that exemplifies Duran's moodier side. "Last Chance on the Stairway" is a giddy paean to youthful romance, a teenybopper's guilty pleasure. "Save a Prayer," a lush, calypso-flavored ballad, evokes romantic nights in tropical paradises, while the final track, "The Chauffeur," builds dramatically from a sparse keyboard ostinato to a dense instrumental coda that became the highlight of many a Duran Duran concert.
There's no doubt that Duran Duran relied on visuals as much as music to achieve their fame. Indeed, "Rio's" exotic, exuberant Nagel cover girl succeeds as well as the music itself in establishing Duran's jet-setting zeitgeist. But with "Rio," Duran Duran proved they're more than just well-coiffed video stars. As emblematic of the 1980s as they are, these songs have nevertheless stood the test of time. Like a glittering, multifaceted diamond, "Rio" endures as a shining example of 80s pop music at its best.
BEAUTIFUL. Duran Duran's best album.......2005-01-03
After all these years, I still love this album. This was the first "record" I ever purchased when I was young. I believe it came out in 1982, so I was a mere 10 (my GOD....am I really THAT old??!). Anyway, this is a beautiful album. It had the popular songs "Rio" and "Hungry LIke the Wolf" which were also some of the first videos ever aired on MTV. My favorite songs on 'Rio" are "Save a Prayer", "New Religion" and "Lonely in Your Nightmare." Simon LeBon never sounds better than on this album. An almost perfect piece of work for Duran Duran before they became TOO popular. On my list of all time great albums.
Lovely.......2004-12-12
My favourite songs from this album include "The Chauffeur" and "Save A Prayer." As another reviewer commented, the lyrics are more complex than most pop music, and the music is darker. Someone else also commented that "The Chauffeur" has an ambient style to it, which I really like. In my recollection, having grown up in the 80's, one thing I remember about Duran Duran and their music (especially Simon's voice) is that I was fascinated by the music first and foremost, not the way they looked (after I learned what they looked like, of course, I found them even more fascinating). But DD was definetely a group that could stand alone on the quality of their music. For instance, instead of singing about a "love affair" as other pop groups would, DD created songs that were quixotic and mysterious through the lyrics and moody music. Songs like "The Union of The Snake" on their album "Seven and The Ragged Tiger" continued this "dark trend" which was very appealing to a new waver/goth (back then they called new wave "goth").

Customer Reviews:
Splendid relaxing CD.......2005-01-31
I am not a guitarist, so I cannot really comment knowledgeably on Gerald Garcia's achievement here, but I feel I must add my voice to those who think this is a splendid CD: Naxos have always been good for a surprise, and I was surprised indeed to find them releasing music like this in 1988! The center of the disc, in more than one sense, is Heitor Villa-Lobos, with Garcia playing all five of his Preludes and his Choro No. 1 (which, due to a printing error on the cover, is accredited to Garcia himself as arranger, but that is not correct, he only arranged the following traditional melodies in the style of Savio). Around this center are arranged pieces by Bonfá, Jobim, Savio, Pernambuco, Almeida, Baden-Powell and Machado - all names that I had never heard of until I purchased this disc out of curiosity. The music is relaxing, only the Villa-Lobos is truly classical, and the sound (the recording was made at a studio in Heidelberg, Germany) is excellent, worthy of a full-price disc. To cap it all, there are Gerald Garcia's own notes giving plenty of background information. You can't go wrong here!
Rhythm is way off........2004-02-24
Great music (but not the jobim pieces). ---Like so many classical guitarists he obviously lacks rhythm- particularly on the *Jobim* pieces. if your releasing a cd of music from brazil and you are a classical guitarist from england you should have more understanding of the music. -However it is only seven bucks and there is some definite magic on this cd.~
And the price is right, too........2003-05-24
This is an exquisitely beautiful album that captures the very essence of Brazil.
Of all the solo guitar albums in my collection, this is the most expressive and poignant.
The performance is masterful, intricate and sensitive. There is a wide mastery of inflection and style.
Gerald Garcia is one of the true masters of solo guitar at any level much less Brazilian. (This album was recorded in 1988.)
So treat yourself to the best 72'46" of listening pleasure.
Bonfa and Jobim: what a double header!.......2001-06-07
I met the two of them in the past. I saw their shows and I bought their recordings. They never disappointed me, on the contrary: I always was amazed by their style and classy quality of sound. Now they return, together, to make us enjoy life in this way and mode: pleasantness in sound. If this would not suffice, there is a bonus, the performance of Gerald Garcia. Splendiferous! GF
He's pretty good!.......2000-07-04
This is a nice C.D. Fans of the Brasilian Classical guitar style will love it. Purists will probably have a lot of trouble with it. Gerald Garcia is from Canada originally (don't quote me on that though) - it seems there are still strong academic overtones in his playing. However, it's a great collection of Brasilian pieces which spans classical composers to Bossa nova and in between. What I like about this album is the fact that most pieces presented by Garcia are his own arrangements. It's truly a unique recording (which is rare in the classical guitar world). His greatest work is on the smaller, traditional Brasilian pieces. These are really charming rustic melodies which were first harmonized by Isaias Savio and very easy to play. But, Garcia takes them to a higher level - more technically demanding without ever losing the essence of the original works. In fact, with all due respect to Mestre Savio, they are great improvements on the originals.
There is a generous number of tracks here, displaying the wealth of work by a great guitarist. More importantly, the repetoire on the album moves away from the standard Albeniz, Granados, Tarrega, Sor collections that so many classical guitarists feel compelled to release. The pieces are probably familiar to most classical guitarists who enjoy playing Brasilian music, but, for those who've never heard or played the works of Almeida, Baden-Powell, Savio or Machado it will be a pleasant surprise. And for people who just like nice music, it will be a fantastic investment.

3 excellent Albums.......2007-05-07
I sent these three cd's to an old friend who was jonesing for some old D2. The first three albums in one place. What a find! durannies of the world unite!
DD Box Set.......2006-03-22
If you are a diehard DD fan, this is right up your alley! It was well worth the money to give my son a gift of the band he still thinks walks on water!
3 albums that span continents of style... A++.......2004-10-11
Who is this clown rohitrao who just wants to waste his time praising old-fart druggie droning and going after bands in totally different genres? Cripes, get a life! And deal with the fact that Gilmore played with these lads for a reason...
Duran Duran's first three albums cover more ground than Pink Floyd ever WILL! PinkF wrote a few Excellent #'s but will always stay stuck in their rut. DD have covered more ground in their careers, much less these 3 albums, than most bands EVER will.. try to deny that, goofus! These 3 DD albums tested the boundaries of sound, and where a band could go, while striking a chord with the world consciousness(Pink Floyd were never compared to the Beatles..).
The first CD shows a band jumping up to proclaim itself with exceptional zeal, the second was perhaps their masterpiece in bravado, excitement and breadth, and the 3rd perhaps suffers from overproduction and silly topics. Personally though, I enjoyed the ambiguous lyrics as I always appreciate mystery and impressionism. Stretch your audiences imagination, you'll both grow from the experience. And, to top things off, the last two songs on Seven and the Ragged Tiger (Tiger Tiger and Seventh Stranger) encompass as much atmosphere and intrigue as a whole Pink Floyd excursion, in 1/6 of the time; and THAT is much more palatable and effective than hours and hours in a PF daze.
5 stars easily, as a collection.

Customer Reviews:
A CD Worthy of Any Collection.......2006-05-09
This album for me epitomised the 80's. Great catchy songs, overdosed with hits. This is the Duran's at their very best. Put on the white jacket, roll-up the sleeves, highlights in the hair and let the party begin. A must-have classic album. Five stars is just not enough !!
Rio, with a special sleeve.......2005-03-31
I was fortunate to interview Simon LeBon while DD was on the road in America for a tour of club dates after the surprise success of "Girls On Film" in US dance emporiums. He mentioned that he was thrilled to be in New York city and had been writing songs non-stop since the band had arrived. Those inspirations must have been the seeds for the songs that evolved into their second album, "Rio." There is an amazing amount of youthful exuberance to be found throughout this disc's nine songs, and the band plays with confidence that belied "Rio's" sophomore album status. (And contrary to what many reviewers have posted, this is closer to my original copy of the album before Capitol did an American remix to capitalize on the breakout of "Hungry Like The Wolf.")
Awesome - but a reissue with the US mixes would be great.......2002-01-13
Since there was some discussion in earlier reviews about the different versions of Rio, I'll explain that first.
When Duran Duran's Rio was released in the US in 1982, more than half of the album was remixed for a special US version. This was the only version that was ever released on vinyl or cassette in the states. When the album made its premiere on CD, the label went with the UK/worldwide master, leaving US fans wondering for years what had happened. The US only album version has never been released on CD. This is the UK/worldwide version of the album. This may not be Duran's best album, but it is the best representation of the style that brought them success. An essential album that belongs on the shelf of anyone who likes/collects/studies alternative/new wave/modern rock music. A masterpiece!!! The only way to improve it? Put the US mixes (which, aside from Hungry Like The Wolf, are actually different than the Night Versions) as bonus tracks.
Always satisfying to buy a D2 album.......2001-08-25
I'm sure it sounds better than the previous CD release but one would have to listen closely to notice. The gatefold cardboard sleeve with a booklet in one side and an inner-sleeved CD in the other side is brilliant. More room for artwork and much nicer to hold than a plastic case. This is how all CD's should have been packaged from the start. The booklet has lyrics and a different Nagel picture that I believe only saw the light of day previously as the cover for the Japanese Rio 7-inch. Enhanced CD features are always a plus.
A Reissue of a Great 80's CD, but..........2001-08-23
First, let me complain: this is the reissue of Duran Duran's "Rio," but it's a reissue of the original UK release, not the edition that was released in America. This means that the versions of "My Own Way," "Lonely in Your Nightmare," "Hungry Like the Wolf," and "Hold Back the Rain" are different from the versions most American Duran fans are familiar with. I am partial towards the American release, because that was the edition I grew up with and am more familiar with. The extended versions of the perviously mentioned songs are, in my opinion, superior to the originals and, for now, are no longer available, unless you have the original LP or cassette as I do.
That small gripe aside, the "Rio" reissue is worth a purchase. You get the orginal album in all its remastered glory, plus you get 3 videos, lyrics, a prtial discography, and a photo gallery (which is not for the fainthearted; those haircuts are so very 80's and so very spooky). Any Duran Duran fan worth his/her salt wouldn't dream of missing this reissued CD!

Customer Reviews:
Absolutely brilliant!.......2003-04-16
Wow! Maiden gig at Rock in Rio must be one of the best live albums maiden ever recorded (yes, even better than Live After Death). The return of Bruce to lead singing, 3 guitars, awesome sound, great crowd... Not to mention the 2 videos that you can play on your PC after experiencing the music. The video on the second disc is really fun to watch. Better than this, just the DVD. This is a must-have. You won't regret it! :)
Best Live Maiden Since Live After Death.......2002-11-04
Iron Maiden has always been strong in the studio; but live is their forte. Even though they have released live material via A REAL LIVE/DEAD ONE many agree that they never captured the immortal performance of Live After Death. Well Rock in Rio nails it. With 3 guitars and a power not seen since Maiden's glory days, this album will prove that Maiden are back on top. You can spring for the DVD and see it unfold; but the live album is a great compliment. It's crisp, clear and has probably the best live engineering that you can get. New to Maiden makes a great compilation; Maiden fan and you haven't gotten it yet what are you waiting for. I caught the BNW show in Ohio and this is exactly what I heard, same set. So if you have never caught Maiden live this will help until the next tour comes along. Try and find this album with the rare LITHOGRAPH it's a Maiden treasure. Both the CD/DVD are great for your collection. UP THE IRONS.

Album Description
The core of Brazilian Nights is famed jazz guitarist Romero Lubambo and superb vocalist Pamela Driggs. This album features guest appearances by Gato Barbieri, Curtis Stigers, Michael Brecker, Herbie Mann, and Jane Monheit. The album is produced by Jason Miles (Sting, Miles Davis, etc.). 2002.
Customer Reviews:
Very good Brazilian Jazz !!!.......2002-06-18
This is a good example of Brazilian Jazz with a fantastic variety of guests of Romero Lubambo. Fresh and interesting cuts that propel more Brazilian Jazz to the world.
.... I don't agree with the previous reviewer. Brazil is the most Musical and Cultural Melting Pot of the World, and I think there is a lot of Brasil in these compositions; when Brazilian rhythms married American Jazz, a new breed of music was formed, therefore, you find both, Sambas and Jazz beautifully blended. So to say that Brazilian Jazz or Jazz with a Brazilian flavor has very little of Brasil or very little of America is a falacy. Please let's get more exposure to other cultural forms. You'll love this album by the way.....
Not the real thing.......2002-06-10
There's very little Brazil in these nights. Good musicianship but an enormous eagerness to sell, what is not bad per se but produces something that could be made by virtually any decent pop star around.
