Expanded reissue of this exciting live performance at the 1949 Paris Jazz Festival, Miles' first-ever trip out of the U.S.! Features four previously unavailable tracks: 'The Squirrel', 'Crazy Rhythm', 'All The Things You Are' and 'Blues Finale' (which finds Miles jamming alongside most of the stars of the festival including Charlie Parker). Many of the cuts are appearing here for the first time on CD. 13 tracks. Jazz Factory. 2006.

Ths entire disc is sourced from mp3s'!!! I had it analyzed by a professional friend and he says without a doubt, this comes from a mp3 file source. How does this affect us, the listeners and collectors? Well, a recording as rare and raw as this already has inherent flaws. Any reputable, responsible, and ethical audio engineer or producer would take the utmost care to ensure that they issue a definitive recording of the best quality available. Now, in 1949 it is safe to assume that this show was not recorded as an mp3, which means it has an analog source, a lossless source, in which someone compressed to a lossy, or mp3 source. This is fine if you do it to your personal collection to save space, but to compress high-quality collectible music (even if the audio is amateur) and then sell it for what these people are selling it for is downright dishonest not to mention disloyal.
I have spent a lot of time and money building a jazz library of digital sources (cd's) and have been more than disappointed by the following labels: Jazz Factory, Lone Hill Jazz, Gambit, RLR (Rare Live Recordings), Definitive, and the parent company I believe is Disconforme/Jazz Messengers out of Spain. These labels claim to be reissuing long unavailable sets as definitive collectible editions but I have found things from bad needle drops (from a direct vinyl transfer w/o remastering!) to the current mp3 source on this Miles Quintet in Paris '49 set. These labels are BOOTLEGGERS plain and simple, they have found loopholes in old outdated copyright laws in Europe (Spain for sure, probably Germany and Italy as well) and they are jumping through them with their inferior collection, lossy sources, raw vinyl transfers, and some of them are just re-labeled official releases that are currently available from the original labels, such as Blue Note, Prestige, New Jazz, Riverside, etc. (I bought the same John Coltrane recordings three times because they were labeled in a way that made them appear to be different from one another), the only old school labels I have yet not to see ripped off are Impulse and Verve.
So, to Miles and this rare date I give 5 stars, but I wouldn't buy one single disc from these 1/2 star labels that are ripping off the children of these great musicians.
Even the liner notes suck! They are vague, they say absolutely nothing about the music, some of them just contain quotes and general information about the artist, and on several occasions I have found the "facts" to be completely wrong. AVOID AT ALL COSTS, SHAME ON AMAZON FOR SELLING BOOTLEGS!

Recording 1949, from a live radio broadcast, not the best sound, but miles is in good form as well as James Moody on Sax. There are several other cd's out there with the same content "Live Paris 49", this one at least is complete with bonus tracks. A cd for the serious Miles collector

        The many releases that have been made public offer a variety of perspectives for listeners regarding the music and stylistic mastery of Lennie Tristano. But as most listeners know an artist in flight(live) is what defines the master in the minds of the listener. The unbreaking current of eight notes that has long defined the Tristano style is evident and so beautifully executed on this extraordinary album. If you are a jazz lover this is a `must have' and `must listen to'contribution by the legendary artists. Please enjoy this example of artistic beauty. YOU'LL NEVER REGRET IT.
