The sextet arrangements on saxophonist pete yellin's Mellow Soul (Metropolitan) are crafted to be simultaneously tight and loose. That befits a leader who respects bop's pithy designs while also delighting in the options of post-Coltrane exploration. I explain the disc's vibe because Yellin isn't the most well-known musician, either - a Brooklyn resident, he has operated in the shadow world of education for quite a while. Yellin's reemergence as a recording artist a few years ago was a bit of an ear-opener. The horn lines on the feisty little It's You or No One (Mons) had a fierce sense of duty, authoritatively gliding around their chosen paths. That mix of volition and ease continues on Mellow Soul. Although Yellin may not be known to the general public, his rep is strong among other players. (It's not everyone who can put the finger on Chick Corea for a session.) In fact, this casually cool outing is a players' session. The band is rounded out by Eddie Henderson, Vincent Herring, Harvey Swartz, Carl Allen, and Peter Leitch. Louis Bauzo, a percussionist pal of Yellin's from Tito Puente gigs, also helps out. With a slightly sweet-and-sour tone distinguishing his sound, Yellin proves a memorable improvisor. And although he says in the liners that he's not a fiery kind of player, there are moments - "LIU House Blues" and "Song for Lynn" - where the frenzy necessary to communicate bop's essence is front-and-center. He's cagey, too. His solos seldom go where you expect them to. But sextets are about sharing, and each player makes his mark somewhere in the nine pieces. Henderson's trumpet joyfully leaps through the changes of "You're My Everything." Guitarist Leitch covers the leader's solo with a cozy blanket of harmony on Ellington's "Warm Valley." And with his sage comping on "Shaw Thing," Corea demonstrates exactly what people mean when they speak of a pianist's "touch."
