Customer Reviews:
Interlude is great........2007-03-09
I wanted a CD that captured the mood and feelings of the movie. The score sort of recycles itself. Its important to know the title of the song so that you can understand the music. This is really a great Soundtrack.
My favorite part is the interlude, its a little long but how else can you capture the whole movie in just a few minutes!
great musik.......2007-03-08
This cd is the parfait double of the film.
You just have to lesson it for being in the film. Great tunes.
A must have!.......2007-02-21
This is a good cd, although it was not exactly what I was expecting. I was hoping for more lyrics in the songs rather than just the music, as it was sung in the movie. Although I love the music just the same.
Put it on and dream.......2007-01-09
The music is so pleasant. It is something that inspires thought.
Lots of instrumental pieces.......2007-01-05
This is a great CD, but if you are looking for a lot of gospel tunes you might be disappointed, there are many instrumental peices, that are pretty however.

The Raney drought breaks.......2006-11-20
Jimmy Raney was one of the best of the post-Charlie Christian generation of guitarists although, like Tal Farlow, he is unjustifiably neglected these days. Raney's solos have a subtle, lacy quality about them - which is not to say that he couldn't swing, as this welcome reissue demonstrates. Raney plays with inspiration and intensity throughout. The pinpoint accuracy of his runs is breathtaking. This disc is superior to A, the best Raney record previously reissued. The sound quality is better and Bob Brookmeyer's low register valve trombone solos are more appropriate than John Wilson's trumpet which on A clashes with Raney's less extrovert approach. Raney himself in the original liner notes describes this 1956 recording as his best to date. Hopefully this reissue will do something to make Raney better known. It is also to be hoped that the other fine session made about this time, In Three Attitudes, will once again see the light of day before too long.
Jimmy Raney is the Charlie Parker of the Guitar!.......2006-02-15
Another awesome recording by probably the finest jazz guitarist and educator. This is a wonderful reissue. Bob Brookmeyer and JR's arrangements are cool and swingin'. To all consumers of jazz guitar CD's, this is a great addition.
Also, if the owners of the 4 Xanadu recordings are reading this... PLEASE reissue all of Jimmy Raney's recordings.

Album Details
From 1967 to 1974, the Great Guitarist Jimmy Raney (1927-1995) Went Into Semi-retirement in Louisville, and Didn't Make a Single Trip to the Recording Studios. Whether this was Due to Personal Problems (Like his Growing Alcohol Addiction) Or to the Lack of Interest by the Major Recording Companies, his Discography Presents a Notable Gap of Almost Ten Years, which is Only Represented by a Couple of Live Recordings. Recorded with Amateur Equipment on December 17 and 18, 1974 at New York's Famous Bradley's Club, the Concerts on this CD Occurred Just after Raney's Comeback. Like Many Other Great Jazzmen, Jimmy Raney Had a Unique Musical Sound, which Encompassed Both Modern and Traditional Styles. These Recordings at Bradley's - Issued Here for the First Time Ever - Give More Than Ample Proof of Raney's Exceptional Creativity, featuring the Guitarist as the Only Solo Voice, Backed by Another Guitar and Bass, and with the Omnipresent Murmur of an Enthusiastic Crowd.
Customer Reviews:
Good playing, poor sound quality.......2007-06-02
Jimmy Raney is one of the greats of jazz guitar with feet firmly planted in the Charlie Christian be-bopping horn-like school. From a certain perspective, almost anything he played is worth hearing at least once, and that's the perspective you need to adopt with this 2-cd set. Sounding wobbly and distorted, as if it were recorded on a hand-held Realistic tape recorder, which it may well have been, you can nevertheless hear Jimmy Raney playing much as he did in his youth - endless and fluid lines of crystalline harmonic logic. He's accompanied on all tunes by some straightforward electric bass and on some tunes by a second guitar. No drums. No horns. Just Jimmy Raney as he was in 1974, just out of "retirement" and embarking on the last phase of his career.
Jimmy's two shining hours -- plus 20 minutes more .......2007-04-18
Gambit's issue of this previously unknown Jimmy Raney session from 1974 is good news for all jazz guitar fans. Each disc will entertain you with 70+ minutes of solid guitar music done as only Raney could do. There are no comments or jokes, no lengthy introductions or pauses. These live recordings are jazz guitar music from start to finish. Kudos to Gambit, an excellent Spanish firm, for yet another fine jazz package.

Customer Reviews:
Very good "unusual" date.......2004-09-16
Unusual line up here. The NJ recording studio was full of people in that day, 5 march 1957. This album sports a classic Jazz trio with four solo voices, seven musicians. An unusual line up with two guitars (Raney and Burrell) then we have McLean alto, Byrd trumpet, Waldron piano, Watkins bass, Taylor drums. The album opens with "Blue duke", a medium-up tempo 9 minutes blues. "Dead Heat" is a nice original by Waldron who contributed with the opener "Blue Duke" and "Pivot" too. "Dead Heat" is a major swinger a typical hard bop tune with some descending two-five's. "Pivot" is similar, another hard bop thing similar to some Clifford Brown thing. "Close your eyes" is a melodic tune medium tempo with Burrell as a leader here, stating the melody and contributing with two solos. Then "Little Melonae"'s time comes. It's a very beautiful original by McLean written in a sort of Monkish fashion. It's very bebop in a sense. Here they played a long 9 minutes version of the tune. After that comes the longest tune of the album "This way" a speeder opened by Burrell's solo (it's a kind of tune that could be perfect on Kenny's "Blue lights" album, it's that sort of thing). The last tune is the standard "Out of nowhere" a tune where Jimmy is the leader as kenny has been in "Close your eyes". The tempo is medium and the first soloist is Mal. In the end a very satisfying session. I have no difficulties in rating this album 5 stars and to call it essential for jazz guitar enthusiasts. It's a rare kind of album. Usually when you have two guitars in a jazz album you don't find a piano and a sax or a trumpet too because generally guitarists don't want to have stronger solo voices compared to the softer sound of the guitar and morever they don't want another harmonic instrument that could come in their way of comping. Generally you have two guitars double bass and drums. Not here. This thing alone could be interesting enough to buy this album but there's plenty of swing and ideas too here. "Blue lights" from Burrell is another album similar to this one and equally good. Buy with confidence, you can't go wrong if the Jazz album you're considering is a 1957.

Getz the sideman: Great early recordings.......2006-06-18
A compilation to make a careful organizer crazy: although issued under Stan Getz's name, Stan was actually only a sideman on these sides, which were originally issued under guitarist Jimmy Raney's leadership (4 titles) and Terry Gibbs's (the rest). The Gibbs-led date is from 1949 (his first on record under his own leadership), and features a number of alternate takes. MICHELLE is in two parts, the first featuring Gibbs, the second Getz. It's a ballad, though it's taken just a bit too slowly. Both takes are pretty much identical. T&S is an up-tempo swinger, as is SPEEDWAY - which is aptly named though this one is too fast for its own good (it's a bit ragged and goes by in a blur), though Gibbs handles his part nicely.
The Raney-led session is from 1953 (his first on record as a leader) and contains the better music. SIGNAL is an infectious 48-bar tune (16-bar bridge), taken up-tempo, that grabs you and (fortunately) won't let go. Frank Isola's drumming is excellent here. MOTION and LEE are very similar in theme, though the latter, which is about a minute shorter, takes top honors. Both sessions offer up some terrific small-group modern recordings - great Stan, Raney, and Gibbs. A classic.
