In the scheme of things, this is not essential Sidney Bechet, but yet it's a vibrant, exciting, and fun blowing session with considerable charm. Recorded at Boston's Storyville in October 1953, Bechet on soprano is joined by veteran trombonist Vic Dickenson on the front line. The mood is joyous and animated, the tunes are basic, and the two primary soloists sound as if they're having a grand old time. Incidentally, that's promoter George Wein sitting in on piano as a last-minute sub, and he acquits himself quite admirably. Still, it's Bechet's show, and any chance to hear him stretch out should be taken, as his buoyant, charging tone is sure to bring out a smile. --Marc Greilsamer

Lots of great and clear vocals. I was looking for a musical mix and this has a nice sampling of many major songs but also some more recent stuff. I haven't purchased an import before but I would do it again if the opportunity presented itself. It is somewhat annoying to have three cds when I think it could have fit onto two. Still, more than I have complaints, I have compliments about it.

I grew up around jazz musicians, my father being one of them, so you have to imagine hearing all types of music 24/7. My aunt, my father sister, was her churches chior director/organist/pianist. So I was baptismized from those old 78's, 45's and lp's with music. When DJ mixing was the fade of the times I jumped into that also. But during those house party breaks I would throw on some laid back jazz tapes I made for myself just to see the reaction and the people loved that sound. So when cd's merged on the scene I jumped on that bandwagon when it finally gave birth. Still mixing music for special occasions I have often been asked to make a tape or cd as a gift. With the music mixing left in my hands I used this cd, which I fell in love with, and found other matches to the songs on it, which I called 'Back-2-Back Jazz'. Those people have not been the same since & whenever I bump into them they still bring up that subject.....Jazz at Midnight....don't leave home without it....peace out

The album is aptly titled as every selection portrays the feeling of that moment at midnight. It is an excellent music shared with a loved one - whether you are in an intelligent discussion or in a romantic mood. I will always cherish this outstanding piece of work.

Swingin at the Blue Moon Bar & Grille is an album which swings it right and showcases the pre-eminent voice in jazz/swing music today.

This is one album where Steve brings in a full big band and they just let it swing; which is what every jazz/big band singer should do on at least one album.

I really enjoy the recording of "Straighten Up and Fly Right" with his dad Mel Tormé on this album, since it literally sounds like it was recorded live in the studio in two takes; the vibe just shakes it baby. Rumour has it that Mel said after the recording, "I can't see ANY reason to do that over again! Let's get some lunch!"..... Classic!

Tormé voice is sweetly seductive, it launches his career as a serious jazz singer the right way. Tormé displays much of the vocal agility of his famous father but he doesn't mimic or imitate.

This guy is hip, go out and buy his album it swings like jazz music should swing! 5 out of 5 stars baby!

Steve is a singer/songwriter that has staked his claim. His original compositions make the mood. He has also shown that he can put new life and give a whole new sound to some of your favorite covers too. The atmosphere of this CD gives a great feeling and is very listenable. Energy is there when it should be and Steve is smooth when he should be. This is not just a fluke. Steve is a proven artist as heard on his CD "The Night I Fell For You". From the blusey Cole Porter song 'Ca C'Est L'Amour' with some incredible soloing from trumpeter Bobby Rodriguez to the wrenching Torme penned 'Melancholy Monday' Steve has established that he is here to stay and the others better watch out! From the high flyin' energy that starts with the title track 'Swingin' At The Blue Moon Bar & Grille' to the swing ballad 'Loser At Love' everything is here.

Definitely THE artist to watch out for....he's got what it takes to carve out his own special niche in the entertainment industry. Between genetics and environment, show business is in his blood.       Album Description

      Harold Arlen's career as a composer spanned more than 50 years and 400 songs, from the Cotton Club to Hollywood and back to Broadway, but his dream was to be a performer. He brings a singer's sensibility to his compositions; his melodic lines derive from an appreciation not only of what is possible for a singer, but what helps a singer convey power, tenderness, and emotion.

      At Home with Arlen showcases many lesser-known gems from Arlen's catalog of more than 400 songs, with some familiar tunes nestled in among them. Arlen aficionados will be sure to note "Love Held Lightly" from Saratoga; Arlen's personal favorite, "Last Night When We Were Young," which was inexplicably cut from the three films in which it was placed; and the rarely heard "Song of the Gigolo."

      Yet Arlen believed firmly that the composer contributed only half of a song. "A good lyric writer is the composer's best friend," he said. Among his lyrical friends Arlen counted Ira Gershwin, Ted Koehler, Johnny Mercer, E.Y. Harburg - all of whom are represented on this recording, along with Jack Yellen, Dorothy Fields, Peggy Lee, Leo Robin, Truman Capote, and Arlen himself.

      Propelled by Ross Patterson's jazz-influenced arrangements, even familiar classics like "Come Rain or Come Shine" are given a new spin, as Audrey and Jerry Dodgion's alto sax wail together in duet. In addition to Patterson on piano, Audrey is joined on At Home With Arlen by bassist Don Falzone, and drummer Eric Halvorson. Completing the ensemble are multi-instrumentalists Aaron Heick and Jerry Dodgion on flute, clarinet, and alto saxophone.

      I was introduced to this singer by someone from work - i own both of her CD's - this is her best work. I am a fan of Arlen - and her work on here rises to match the material. Her version of "come rain or come shine" may be the best i have ever heard - and when you think of all the women who have recorded it - that is saying something! It is in a word "haunting". If you are looking for a cabaret style CD for the background of a quiet evening or something reflective to listen to with some substance this is a CD for you.

      I keep trying to think of someone to compare her voice to - and it is difficult - since first hearing her I keep thinking that she is a throw back to a generation ago, very talented - and unique - not a carbon copy of everyone else out there recording at the moment.

      I recommend this CD.

      I enjoyed this recording even better than their LIVE AT THE MERCURY THEATRE. Great selection of material, great arrangements, and producing. I'm crazy about Susan Moniz and Kathy Santen. These women do Chicago proud!

      This is a great recording. There is such a wonderful spirit to the LIVE event. The performances are all strong, and are captured well. Special kudos to Hollis Resnick, and the "3 Ingenues 3". The producer of this concert/album is to be commended.

      This collection of 15 songs by some of Chicago's greatest divas is well-worth the purchase. Standouts include Hollis Resnick's "I'll Imagine you a Song" (Lutvak/Hall) and Kathy Taylor's "Losing My Mind" (Sondheim). Cabaret lovers will certainly want to add this to their collection.
