One of the best.......2007-06-06
This album may be not the world greatest audiophile record, but it's the one of finest album that I have. This album does not like other modern audiophile album that use electronics device in order to boost the dynamics range and complicate Mix.
Here they use only single point microphone, no overdubs, no multi tracking, no large mixing control. So the sound is very analog to my ear. It's a must for both audiophile or people who want a great music
a "MUST HAVE" for serius listeners!.......2007-03-08
This CD is simply a "MUST HAVE" for serius listeners!
A must have ........2007-01-21
This CD is a must have for é different reasons: first, a very very interesting compilation of excellent artists, second for the exceptionnal recording quality, and this has become one of my favorite test CD.
A must have like I said.

Although Cliff Edwards, also known as Ukulele Ike, was one of the most popular entertainers of the 1920s he is almost forgotten today. He was the first performer to do the classic "Singing in the Rain," he debuted Gershwin's "Fascinatin' Rhythm" in 1924, and he acted in over 100 movies. Unfortunately, he received no screen credit for his most famous role--as the voice of Jiminy Cricket in Walt Disney's Pinocchio. His version of "When You Wish Upon a Star" is still the definitive version of that classic song. Cliff Edwards deserves to be remembered, and a good place to rediscover him is on Singing in the Rain, a collection of songs from the 1910s, '20s, and '30s recorded for radio in the early '40s. He accompanies his jazzy vocals with his virtuoso ukulele playing. His performances have a surprisingly modern feel with none of the stilted quality that performers from the '20s can have. --Michael Simmons
Customer Reviews:
Cliff at his Best.......2007-03-09
Before he was "Jiminy Cricket", Cliff was a great jazz skat singer. These recordings capture his sense of rhythm, range and inventiveness. His range is amazing. He can go from baritone to counter tenor effortlessly.
I've often thought that the Disney drawings of Jiminy Cricket were intentionally made to look like Cliff.
One of the great personalities of the Jazz Age!.......2006-07-27
Wow! Ever since I've watched a few Cliff Edwards movies, I've gotten addicted to his voice. The song selection on this CD is good, and is really a great tribute to him. Still, I was dissapointed to not find the song Night Owl on it. I thought it was really a catchy tune and I would have loved it to be on this CD. It was a song from a musical called Take a Chance, with him(Cliff Edwards), James Dunn, Lillian Roth, June Knight, and Charles(Buddy)Rogers. It's a good movie other than Pinocchio of Edwards's.
Cliff Edwards: A Great Talent!!!.......2005-06-05
Cliff Edwards was a big star in the 20s and 30s. No, he wasn't a handsome crooner and he didn't enter into the Swing movement. His career as a successful singer was too brief. But just listen to this wonderful album from ASV/Living Era. I was captivated by the first song! I was totally entranced listening to his excellent voice and unique style of singing. He can be lighthearted on songs like "Who Takes Care of the Caretaker's Daughter?" but he can also put his heart into songs such as "I Can't Give You Anything But Love". Today people think Gene Kelly was the originator of "Singin" In the Rain" but just listen to Cliff sing it! It was his song and a momumental hit for him. He introduced the song in "Hollywood Revue of 1929", an MGM film that was a box office hit. Cliff Edwards had a knack for comedy, after all, he knew he was not the type women would swoon over, but he was a very superb musician and this CD is evidence of his diverse talent. I love this album and I am so glad I have it in my collection of music from the 20s and 30s. Why Cliff isn't given the credit due to him as a innovative musician is a mystery. If you like Jazz from this era, this CD is for you!!! I cannot recommend it highly enough. The notes that Cliff could reach are amazing. He transformed every song he recorded into his own. That shows true artistry. If anyone knows who he is, they know him for being the voice of Jiminy Cricket which he was excellent at but he left behind these superb recordings. From songs with a touch of humour to heart-felt songs all done so very, very well. This CD is seventy-three minutes of great music from a truly gifted musician. Buy it!!! You won't regret it. You will be captivated by his music. I hestitated but I remembered his great performance in "Hollywood Revue of 1929" of "Singing In the Rain". I have come to appreciate and treasure Cliff Edwards' talent so much more from this superb collection of his recordings. I believe that you will too. I would give it six stars if I could but it deserves five stars. Don't hesitate and treat yourself to a talented artist whom you will thoroughly enjoy.
one of the true originals.......2005-05-06
Cliff Edwards, what a talent! Nobody knows who he is anymore, but his music is a segement or original Americana, just listen to this CD and you'll be feeling great. It's a real pleasure to listen to music so stripped down yet lyrical nevertheless. And there are 32 great tracks on this CD (even though they run a couple of minutes each, each one is a gem)! I would love to see a movie made about Cliff's life someday, a true American tragedy. This recording was made from a radio transcription in 1943, long after Cliff had initially made his mark. He was singing "scat' back in the 20's before that style of singing even had a name. And don't forget that he is the voice of Jiminy Cricket ("When You Wish Upon A Star")!
The Saddest Story.......2005-03-04
Wait till you hear the passion and the wit with which Cliff sings the famous Billy Rose number, "The Night Is Young (And You're So Beautiful." I love the optimism and the subtlety of the lyrics, "When the lady is kissable, and the evening is cool, any dream is permissable--in the heart of a fool." Elsewhere the track uses the word "overamorous"--when was the last time you heard that in a song lyric?
Cliff was born in Hannibal, Missouri and had the class to brag that he hailed from the same burg as none other than Tom Sawyer. Like Tom Sawyer, he was a boy at heart. Even his trademark uke had a boyish charm to it, and he could wield it like nobody's business. It is said that at the top of his popularity, music stores were selling ukeleles at a rate of 250 a week, a feat unmatched ever since.
This LP, made in the 40s while Cliff's voice had attained a golden lustre, shows him at his best. It's simple, and unadorned, but you will surely get a tear in your eye when you hear him whisper:
"Like a bolt out of the blue, fate steps in to see you through/
When you wish upon a star, your dreams come true."
It didn't happen for Cliff Edwards, but it can still happen to you.

Quintessential Shirley Horn Trio, timeless grown-up romance.......2006-05-12
Softly is a masterpice. Anyone who appreciates a grown up sense of romanticism and sensuality will find endless joy from this album. For me, Softly is the perfect soundtrack to a rainy Sunday afternoon in bed with your lover.
The Shirley Horn Trio played so slowly, but with perfect musicality and rhythm, as to be hypnotic. The drummer, Steve williams, is one of the finest percussionists you will ever hear. It should be noted that Shirley Horn is the singer AND pianist. Ms. Horn's voice is sultry and deep while her piano playing displays a highly sensitive understanding of chord structure and voicing. I often think her piano playing sounds like French impressionists like Debussy, Ravel, or Satie.
You're my thrill is a hauntingly beautiful melody/lyric, How Long Has This Been Going On? includes the rarely used opening recitative as heard in "Funny Face" starring Audrey Hepburn, My, How The Time Goes By is the definition of "in-th-pocket" groove, and my favorites: I watch you sleep, and the title track, Softly, truly capture the tender satisfaction of watching your lover sleep and the complexities of adult relationships.
I am an audiophile. I used to think the album was poorly recorded because I had a cheap Pioneer stereo with boomy Bose speakers. On a mediocre stereo the bass is heavy and the treble sounds bright. On a high-end system the album is a bit cool, but very clearly recorded. Audiophile is the name of the record label that produced Softly!
I have every Shirley Horn album and this is perhaps my favorite. I also recommend the albums You Wont Forget Me, I Love You Paris, and Close Enough For Love.
We'll miss you Shirley!
Fantastic.......2004-10-11
This is a truly hypnotic experience. "Estate" will leave you spellbound and so will others. It is very difficult to find this CD, so grab it now. I believe it is a standout among Horn's distinguished body of work. Every single song is great, and this CD goes a long way to guarantee Horn's status as the premier female jazz crooner.
shirley's most intimate.......2003-02-07
Having heard most of Shirley's recorded work, (as well as seeing her live a few times), I can safely say this is the most intimate of all albums put out by this unsung american hero. For those of you who don't know, all of this generation's ballad stylists--Diana Krall,Jane Monheit and just about all of NY's supper club set--nearly owe their careers to Shirley. She is simply devastating when singing a ballad. "Estate" on this album is a particularly poignant testament. What adds to this collection's intimacy is the fact that it was recorded in her kitchen into the wee hours. Sound wise it is just slightly rough, with the volume mixed a little to hot on some of the tracks, but this really just adds to the home spun feel. As for the rest of the playing...steve williams it just plain swingin' his [butt] off! Even on the ballads. I feel this is the trio's best example of their rubato "almost out of time" transcendance. Really a must have.

Customer Reviews:
One of many Time-Warner Warwick compilations........2007-01-04
This CD is one of many Time-Warner Warwick compilations. All of Dionne's biggest '60s hit are on this cheapy CD. It should be remastered and come with liner notes to explain the history of the songs. Seeing that it is a budget priced music CD, it can provide an affordable reference for youngsters not familiar with these oldies. It is high time that Dionne gets honored by The Rock & Roll Hall of Fame! VH1 Diva special in her honor?
A Great Team.......2006-08-30
I forgot how good the Bachrach music was! He was a master.
Of course, his music is accompanied by Dionne Warwick's beautiful voice. I only wish the recording of the CD was a little better - it sounds a little shallow so I put it on full bass to get a better sound.....
Beautiful - refreshing - good score, talented singer.....
My very favorite Dionne Warwick hits compilation.......2006-08-22
Of all the wonderful Dionne Warwick compilations on the market, this is my favorite. All of the hits from the 60's are here in chronological order from her first hit, "Don't Make Me Over" and ending with her big 1969 hit, "I'll Never Fall In Love Again". In addition to the well known numbers, such as "Alfie", "I Say A Little Prayer", and "Walk On By", this CD contains Dionne's classic renditions of "A House Is Not A Home" and "You'll Never Get To Heaven". Also included is "I Just Don't Know What To Do With Myself" which wasn't a big hit for Dionne, but should have been.
The only glaring omissions are the top 10 "This Girl's In Love With You" and Dionne's breathtakingly understated reading of the Jerry Butler hit "Make It Easy On Yourself". However, as both of these recordings are readily available on other compilations, there is no reason to avoid this CD.
If you are a Dionne Warwick fan, you will love this CD. If you have never experienced Dionne at her very best, this CD is a great place to start.
Unmistakable Part of The 60's Soundtrack.......2006-05-25
Dionne Warwick's music is so integral to popular music that we forget a couple of things. One thing we forget is that she recorded so many hits, to a large extent thanks to the great songwriting team of Burt Bacharach and Hal David. The second thing we forget is how good she is on these records. Her voice is strong, smooth, and clear, singing with passion, and a yearning that comes from deep within.
This collection captures all of her 60's and early 70's hits. It's well worth the purchase.
Fan of Dionne Warwick's.......2003-12-16
Hello. I'm trying to find release dates for a few of Dionne's songs from the 60's, such as I Say a Little Prayer, Message to Michael, Alfie, Trains, and Boats and Planes, You'll Never Get to Heaven, Walk on By, What the World Needs Now is Love, Promises, Promises, and Never Fall in Love Again. Help, please! Thank you.

Amazon.com essential recording
With the New York Philharmonic on its best behavior, Pierre Boulez uncorks a reading of Petrushka that is vibrant, energetic, and full-voiced, with razor-sharp rhythm and ensemble. The solos, played by the likes of Julius Baker (flute) and Paul Jacobs (piano), have never been more effectively done. The recording, with the sizzling sonics typical of CBS's multitrack heyday, offers an X-ray of the score; the remastering is excellent. Pierre Boulez's interpretation of The Rite of Spring is perhaps more French than Russian, but it's impressive nonetheless. While it emphasizes structure, clarity, and texture over raw energy and visceral excitement, and always keeps something in reserve, it is tellingly potent in the "Glorification of the Chosen One" and the "Sacrificial Dance." In this account Boulez and the Cleveland Orchestra established a new standard for ensemble, virtuosity, and idiomatic execution of the music, and their recording remains one of the great achievements of the stereo era. --Ted Libbey
Customer Reviews:
Great sound and performances from a 20th-21st century conductor/composer of another 20th century composer.......2005-09-19
Pierre Boulez leads brilliant, blistering performances of 2 of Stravinsky's famous ballets, "Petrouchka" (1911) and "The Rite of Spring" (1913). The New York Philharmonic recording of "Petrouchka" (recorded in 1971) has moderate tempos in many places, and Boulez is nicely nuanced where needed. Stravinsky's colorful orchestration is always apparent, and Boulez lets the music speak for itself: the elements of cruelty and grotesquery are always obvious in Stravinsky's score of a somewhat disturbed plot, written just a few years prior to World War I, a time of political and social upheaval and instability. This is a fascinating recording, and I've heard many: Ormandy (Sony), Bernstein/New York (CBS), Dutoit/London Symphony (DG), Ansermet (Decca), Rahbari (Naxos), Craft (Naxos), Monteux/Paris Conservatoire (London LP), and Stravinsky/Columbia Symphony (CBS). Boulez tends to be clinical in parts of the score, and Stravinsky can take it. Very fine recording.
"Le Sacre du Printemps" (the rite of spring) recorded in 1969 with the Cleveland Orchestra, is also excellent. Boulez keeps the motion and momentum going throughout the Part I and II, up to the "sacrificial dance" (final movement) - where he takes a tempo which is slower than usual. Boulez's tempo is not too slow, nor does it drag, but it is slower than Bernstein/New York (Columbia LP), Ancerl (Supraphon), Abbado/London (DG), or Mehta/New York (Sony).
Sound in both recordings is excellent, better than many DDD recordings made in the past 15 years. Highly recommended, as a souvenir of one great conductor/composer interpreting another.
Exceptional Performances.......2005-08-06
Pierre Boulez, according to some, is known for being too analytical and quite dry in just about everything he does. The recordings come out as meticulously well-played and quite clear, but atmospherically and musically bland. However, I believe there are exceptions: this recording of two of Stravinsky's warhorses is one of them.
Beginning with Petrouchka, Boulez's reputation for making an ensemble play virtuosically and with great clarity is proven. Even while someone may have complained about there not being equal treatment in recording balance, I got the feeling that it sounded more like sitting in an orchestra hall. The soloists play their hearts out (as does the rest of the orchestra) and I have not found anything to complain about.
The excitement of Petrouchka ends and I feel myself begging for more excellent music, and to my relief, Rite of Spring begins with that eerie bassoon solo. I got to thinking that if the beginning solo was any indication of what was to come from the rest of the orchestra on this masterpiece, I was in for a ride I didn't want to get off. The colors and timbre the orchestra put forth and the blend just blew me away. I could feel the terror of this music and it was ingratiating.
Sonics on this recording are top notch and have been since its 'silver disc' debut 11 years ago. So with the quality of sound and quality of performance adding up to top notch, my conclusion is get it and don't regret it. At the price Amazon offers it for, it's a STEAL.
So you want to start listening to classical music...........2004-07-19
This is a pretty good place to start for neophytes. Stravinsky was ahead of much of the pack and at the same time never really dove completely into 12-tone, and these two are his definitive works. Plus, you can always count on Boulez to give a straightforward reading of anything he's involved with.
Unbeatable value, but only one of many.......2003-12-05
The Rite of Spring is easily one of the most significant pieces of music ever written. Every time I hear a radio station having a listeners' poll of "best pieces of classical music," the Rite is always among the top 5. Though the piece can be challenging for those who have never heard Stravinsky, it's a profound piece that yields more enjoyment with each listen (so the first hundred listens are certainly in the "learning" stage).
Among the recordings out there, each accentuates different aspects of the complexity of Stravinsky's score, and a good handful are worth having. Some are noteworthy for their sheer force, while others for their clarity and refinement. This one, an earlier recording of Cleveland under Boulez, is a nice balance of precision and force. Compared to others, it can seem uninteresting, though. At a budget price, however, it certainly provides return for the dollar. Boston under Ozawa (Reference) is a much more forceful and exact performance, and is also sold at a budget price.
Most of the best recordings are still at full price. Boulez has changed drastically in the last 2 decades--now he is less dogmatic, more flexible, and better liked by orchestra players. Since recording quality has also made great strides, the recent recording of Petrouchka and the Rite with Cleveland under Boulez is hard to pass up. The Petrouchka is especially charming. It is only about $3 more, and every bit worth it.
For sheer force, I have always preferred Saint Louis under Leonard Slatkin, though this may be out of print. For precision, the recent recording of San Francisco under Tilson Thomas cannot be beat.
Comparable to the 1969 Boulez/Cleveland, Karajan's with the Berlin Philharmonic is also a classic, notable for its consistency and depth of musicianship, though Karajan audibly struggles with his orchestra at times (I always found this to add "drama" to the work). For recording quality, perhaps the best is Minnesota under Oue, which is also an amazingly clear and exact reading, but perhaps reserved.
In sum, the 1969 Boulez recording is a classic recording for a budget price, but I'd probably go for the Ozawa for the same price. In any event, Tilson Thomas's is amazing and worth every dollar at full price, and Boulez's more recent one is also good.
Get this! :).......2003-08-17
This album is great... excellent performances and really, really great music.... and it's cheap, too!

Customer Reviews:
The greatest singer you've never heard of.......2004-01-04
Love kept Joyce Carr from travelling, so she sang at the same nightclub in Washington, DC for more than twenty years. Her phrasing and delivery of the lyrics put her among the best cabaret singers of the 20th century. Ellis Larkin, the famous New York pianist (Little Carnegie Tavern) accompanies her on half the tunes, Bob Vigoda the rest. You will never forget the first time you hear her.
A must-get disc.......2000-08-27
I first picked up an LP version of this disc about twenty years ago when I read a review in the now defunct "Stereo Review." I enjoyed it so much, I bought the CD version when it was issued. Joyce Carr is one of those singers like Johnny Hartman who was blessed with a wonderful voice and great musicality, but who never "made it big." All I can say is that I love this disc. It is ideal for snowy nights in a log cabin with a roaring fire and good brandy.
One thing you must know. The second half of the CD was taken from an LP that Ms. Carr put out back in the 50's. The sound of the last half is not so hot. But the first dozen songs more than compensate. This is a CD that truly deserves more recognition and distribution than it is currently receiving.
This lady knows how to sing a ballard with maturity........1999-10-12
I heard this album on Public Radio 10 years ago and it is still as fresh now as it was then. Joyce Carr is a rare singer who knows the words and does not stylize or overwhelm them. Mature, romantic, but positive-the listener has but to close their eyes, to find themselves in a small bristo, to fall in love with this singer.

Fantastic song bird.......2007-04-06
Lee Wiley was unique as are these recordings. Her voice is sultry, soft and wonderful to listen to. The songs are all "pop" with great lyrics that make today's songs pale in comparison. I have been a fan of Wiley's for many years but only recently learned we share the same birthdate, October 9th. Maybe that was a "hidden affinity". But in any event I think she is one of the most underrated jazz vocalists of all time.
One of a Kind.......2003-06-15
There never was a singer like Lee Wiley and these singular recordings have survived over the decades as a testament to a smokey, knowing, wry, evocative jazz vocalist beyond compare. The songs have survived over the decades, too--literate, unusual, engaging. A wonderful collection.
Classics from the 40s.......2002-09-09
Lee Wiley made these recordings for the Liberty Record Shop in the days before conglomerates controlled everything on record. She was a singer with great musical style and a clarity of voice that lets every lyric shine through. Plus, she knew everyone in New York and got the best musicians as back up to her intimate, sophisticated vocals. I especially like the tracks with "Organ by Maurice" -- Hammond organ played by Fats Waller, though contract restrictions prohibited using his name. I'd give the Gershwin recordings a slight edge over the Cole Porter takes, but all of them are terrific. This is incredibly stylish music from a time when style meant more than the clothes one wore. The recording quality is quite good -- an essential disc for every lover the American popular song.
Best CD In My 2000 Record Jazz Collection..........1999-10-02
I am a 21 year old jazz collector, I have over 2000 jazz lp's and Cd's, 78's exe.. and this is my favorite jazz vocal CD. Lee Wiley is wonderful(read Will Fiedwald's "Jazz Singing to find out how wonderful Lee Wiley is). Listen to Wiley's voice and let all the cares in the world just disappear. Buy the best cd in the world.
