Self-referential and remarkably consistent, the ECM label has come to represent a state of mind: a place where melancholy and romance intertwine, seductively rendered in gorgeous sound. The Swiss-born singer, Susanne Abbuehl, making her ECM debut, clearly knows the territory, paying homage to the ECM artists who helped explore it. Backed by piano, clarinet, and drums, all played with a spare angularity (suggesting the early ECM recordings of Paul Bley), Abbuehl's clear diction and wistful delivery align her with fellow ECM stalwarts Annette Peacock and Carla Bley. Indeed, she covers several of Carla's tunes, including "Ida Lupino" and "Closer" (vehicles for the aforementioned Paul) as well as "A.I.R" (from Escalator over the Hill), in which she uses her voice as an instrument, reminiscent of Jan Garbarek's version of the same tune (from ECM's Witchi-Tai-To). Treatments of poet e.e. cummings's elliptical words, and a doleful version of Monk's "Round Midnight" round out the album, with Abbuehl's lovely voice providing bittersweet balm for late-night introspection. --Wally Shoup

Album Description
Stephen Stills found himself in a New York recording studio, laid down a few hundred dollars, told the engineer to roll tape, and this collection of songs is what came about. Finally remastered and released to the public, this album shows the beginnings of Crosby, Still, and Nash.

An Interesting Look Back In Time.......2007-07-11
I'm sure some folks will complain about the stripped down production, but how many times do we listeners get a chance to hear an artist bursting at the seams, and on the verge of super-stardom? Now I'm not discounting Buffalo Springfield, but any fan of Crosby, Stills and Nash, will surely love this historic disc. The cd really heats up during the second half. The complex "Suite Judy Blue Eyes", (I was always convinced C,S and N must've worked it out together), but here it is by Stephen himself. What a treat. If Neil Young ever released anything like this raw studio recording, people would line up around the block to get it, and then proclaim it;Genius. I think Stills has always been under-rated, and maybe something like this will finally get him some of his overdue props!
Acoustic memories.......2007-07-11
If you're looking for polished studio material, this cd is not for you. If, however, you are a fan of acoustic Stills and like to hear him in good voice, you should give this one a listen. This is just Stills with a guitar. As advertised, this cd contains material left behind from an impromptu recording session which followed the recording of a Judy Collins album. Not surprisingly, there is a previously unheard version of Suite: Judy Blue Eyes. With no harmonies to accompany it, it may sound a bit bare at first, but Stills is in fine voice throughout this product and he is hitting notes much higher than I remember ever before. He has added another rather simple love song simply entitled Judy. Altogether, there are five previously unheard tracks, two of which are great: The Doctor Will See You Now opens with a Neil Young sounding riff. It also features a high-pitched voice, one that is amazingly in tune; Bumblebee is a fun, upbeat number. Helplessly Hoping, Wooden Ships and Know You Got to Run all sound different without the csn harmonies, but all are good. Wooden Ships does not contain the entire song as csn recorded it, but is still quite listenable. Helplessly Hoping is great even without the harmonies; it would have been a hit either way. The cd also contains different versions of Change Partners and Manassas's So Begins the Task. A longer version of Treetop Flyer is included, probably to capitalize on the song's current popularity. It is not a part of the 1968 sessions as is evident in the voice. Any fan of early Stills will be pleased with this effort.
Bravo, Mr Stills!.......2007-07-10
I have been waiting two months for this release and I am pleased to say that I love it! These stripped-down versions of the tunes we're familiar with and the previously-unreleased one's as well really give you insight into how great of a writer Stills is. Especially interesting are the snippets of lines that became lyrics in other tunes Stills was to release later on. Extra thanks to Stephen for finally providing us with an audio version of "Treetop Flyer"!
We Stills fans can't thank Joe Colasurdo enough for getting this long lost tape to Stephen all these years later. Its nice to know that music still means more than money to someone out there.
Now if we can just get CSN to release an album of all-new material in an acoustic format

Outstanding!!!!!!.......2007-03-15
What a cool cd. Brings me back to the good old days. Great classic Rock&Roll!!
Rock On.......2007-01-19
I am in my early forties and had a couple of April Wine albums as a teenager. I forgot how good they were (are). I like the earlier stuff the most, its a little harder and edgier, this album has a nice mix of their hits and most popular mainstream songs. It still rocks...if you only remember the ballads or songs that got played on the radio 25 years ago, I recommend picking this one up. The sound is great on this CD as well.
Has the big hits, but lacking.......2006-09-14
As the other reviewers have said, the Classic Masters collection just doesn't cover enough material to be worthy of the April Wine discography. I find "The Hits" much more palatable as a long time fan, but it too is missing some of the best material and has some "fluff" that doesn't belong. Although it is expensive and somewhat hard to find, the box set is the way to go. It covers the band's career from the early days through their hitmaking period and includes some excellent live performances. It's always tough to please all of the people all of the time on a greatest hits collection, but classic masters definitely misses the boat.
Where's the Beef?.......2005-11-26
In the 70's there was American British and Canadian rock. Its a shame that most living outside of Canada didn't get an opportunity to hear a lot more of the Canadian product. My biggest beef with all of the April Wine "greatest hits" compilations was the fact that most of the rocking early years has been largely ignored. Who put these compilations together? Where was lead singer/songwriter/guitarist Myles Goodwyn during all of this? Where is "Fast Train, Bad Side of the Moon, Drop Your Guns, Electric Jewels, Weeping Widow, Just Like That, You Could Have Been a Lady, Anything You Want, Victim for Your Love, Forever for Now, Cat's Claw, Come on Along, The Band Has Just Begun" etc etc etc? The albums "Electric Jewels, On Record and Stand Back" as well as "Live at the El Mocambo" are much more representative of April Wine. Canada rocked, we really did. You just wouldn't know it from this pap.
Needs "Ladies Man" and "All Over Town".......2004-03-10
First off, these Classic Masters CDs are top notch re sound quality. the remastering is excellent
Of course, the Cds should be longer (more tracks), but what are ya gonna do?
This is a nice collection, but I'm NOT buying it for this reason:
The CD DOES NOT include "LADIES MAN" or "ALL OVER TOWN" (not to mention some of the other great early material)
Both the above songs are very good, hard rocking April Wine tunes that DID receive radio play in the early 80's
So EVEN THOUGH this collection includes other greats such as I LIKE TO ROCK, SIGN OF THE GYPSY QUEEN and their excellent cover of King Crimson's "21st CENTURY SCHIZOID MAN", it's OMISSION of "Ladies Man" and "All Over Town" keep me from buying
It's a SHAME because these two very good ROCK songs could've replaced a couple of those lame, commercial, sappy MUSH songs like "Love Remembered Me" or "Tell Me Why"
This "could've been" a complete and most excellent hard rock example of April Wine.
But EMI needs someone who knows the band a bit better to compile the tracks
That being said, it's an okay introduction and you can be guaranteed that the sound quality is excellent
Just a shame it's not complete with essential songs from this band

Platinum sales. Palatial homes. Fred Durst's cell-phone number. Is nothing enough to lift the heavy air of angst that hangs over Staind? "I've mastered feeling nothing/ I'm dead inside/ Why don't I care?" sings frontman and walking existential crisis Aaron Lewis by way of response on "Run Away," the opening track of the group's fifth album. And so the mood is set--again. The rest of the band offers its agreement through brooding torrents of noise and dense minor-key melodies, maintaining its allegiance to 1990s metal heroes Alice In Chains and Pantera. With the exception of the tantalizingly melodic "Devil" and tender love song "Everything Changes," the acoustic guitars have largely been set aside on Chapter V, leaving Staind to pummel away at its troubles and hoping that people still have time to listen to self-pitying grown men moan about their dysfunctional childhoods. "Falling is easy/ It's getting back up that becomes a problem," Lewis sings on "Falling." --Aidin Vaziri
Album Description
Chapter V marks the return of one of the biggest-selling rock groups in America today. Recorded at Allaire Studios in Shokan, NY and at the band's Springfield, MA rehearsal space, the CD was produced and mixed by David Bottrill (Peter Gabriel, Mudvayne, Godsmack). Staind is back in a huge way!

A small step back to form........2007-04-21
To me, Staind really fell from grace with 13 Shades of Grey. I loved Tormented, Dysfunction, and Breaking the Cycle. 13 SHades was just watered down to the point where the only reason you could tell it was them was Aaron Lewis' vocals. The hard edge that was evident on their previous efforts was all but gone.
Chapter V is a step back towards Breaking the Cycle style Staind, but in no way comes close to the caliber of record that one was. Oh, well. I think we have seen the end of heavy Staind and will only see a more mainstream version from now on. As long as they stay similar to Chapter V and don't water themselves down any more, I will stay a fan regardless.
There is a reason why these guys are popular, great album!!!.......2006-12-13
This is a great fifth album from this boston based band. I have all of their albums from tormented to this one, and this one is really the most coalesced and solid album from them yet. There are many hits to be released on this album, like right here, schizophrenic conversations, falling ect... This band may have been part of the "nu metal" movement, but they continue to release good music that many people have chosen to like. Sure, it's not in the same class of metal as Iron Maiden, Neurosis, and Megadeth, some of my all time favorite bands, but it is great in it's own respect. Worth picking up, for a introduction to staind, or addition to a growing collection.
A Waste !!! I feel sorry for those who Deserve ...........2006-11-21
To be honest guys , bands such as staind, limpbizbit, taproot, disturbed, breaking benjamin and others are purely wasting all their albums. These guys take atleast 4-5 albums to better and change their music. Whereas there are many deserving bands out there who can make great music in just 1 or 2 records.....examples are acroma, revis etc...! and all these soo called rockstars of todays music do is scream, pout ,and make a 3-4 song the same verse-chorus-verse-chorus-bridge formula !! and well....they have a great knack of emulating the bands of the past decades..!! Its all true !!! Others deserve a break..! atleast these guys should gift away one album to those struggling talented bands.. !! but they wont...coz they r afraid !!! Damn them !!
Staind is not bad at all ! ..but just i have to say...whrs the originality and creativity..why try the same thing again and again and again !!! Guys.... Listen to TOOL and King Crimson ....which all these bands...rip off !!!!!
And the hits just keep on coming..........2006-08-16
While some may argue that Staind is becoming too soft compared to their earlier albums like Tormented and Dysfunction, that sentiment hasn't stopped them from putting out another great album packed with hits. This album blends their "hard core" metal beginnings with their greatly developed musical talents and abilities and the result is friggin brilliance. Aaron's vocals and Mike's guitar make this album worth buying.
Stop Hatin'.......2006-08-11
Poor Staind. No one ever seems to understand them. Their first two albums, "tormented" and "dysfunction" were hits, showcasing staind's heavy blend of hard rock, and frontman Aaron Lewis's screwed up family angst. But after "dysfunction" staind started to play down the heaviness, and focus on their musical abilities. Lewis dropped the screaming for the most part, but his angst stayed the same. Still, all the wimps hiding behind their message boards talked crap.
With this, their fifth release, Staind continue pretty much where "break the cycle" and "14 shades of grey left off" the lead single, right here, is a breathtaking piece, followed by many more. I recently saw Staindwith three days grace and hurt on the Jagermeister world tour, and their show was a breathtaking experience for me, my girlfriend and our 2 friends.
So everyone who doesnt believe in evolution...stop talkin crap and go listen to your crappy pop-emo bands.........stop disrespecting legitimate artists like staind

Transitional Dead.......2007-05-10
I've always seen the `71 Dead as a band changing its sound, or making it more diverse (EVEN more diverse). The dual drum attack was gone with Mickey Hart, Tom Constanten keyboard work was gone too, and new numbers were being added to the band's repertoire. Thus, the Dead's sound was changing. Bob Weir was gaining more well-diserved prominence on stage, usually performing cowboy-like songs (El Paso, Me & Me Uncle), and the sound of the group in general was tighter, less free-form-jam-rock. Anyway, that year featured some expanded "Other Ones" and "Dark Stars" too. So, as you can see, it is not easy to describe what was exactly going on, for it was band with a really continiously-evolving sound. To these years of mine, it is a year of transition, the immediately preeceding step to the extremely beautiful `72 tour when the sound got richer (EVEN richer).
Anyhow, amongst this confusing commentary, there is surely a certainty: it is a very nice set (recommended most of all for people who have already got into the Dead world). The sound quality is simply great and clear, Pigpen was (as the liner notes rightly say) in his last healthy tour (the "Lovelight" included here is one of the best ever released); Jerry Garcia was playing beautifuly as always; Bob Weir was, as I said before, really growing, Phil Lesh kept on being an outstanding driving force; Kreutzmann was playing better than ever and we even get some nice keyboard touches from special guest T.C.
Who cares 'bout reviews anyway? Let there be songs to fill the air.
Have you ever been to . . . Electric Dixieland?.......2007-01-09
This is a recording of the band a little over halfway between Live/Dead and Europe '72. Mickey Hart is gone, Tom Constanten is still playing keyboards. Newer material like "Truckin'" and "Bertha" are now on the set list.
The undisputed masters of turn-on-a-dime improvisational music, they've now added a tight-as-nails groove - without taking anything away from the spontaneity. The Dead are tighter than they have ever been in the past, evolving toward the concert sound they would have for the rest of their career.
This is a great, well-recorded live album - sonically as pure and direct as Europe '72, but with slightly different arrangements. The instruments are crystal-clear and distinct, and the vocals are right out front.
The Dead were basically an electric Dixieland band - never playing a song the same way twice, but always putting their unique stamp on it. This recording catches them at the point when they REALLY began to hit their stride.
I'm SO glad this is out!
The Dead, The Fillmore East, The Ultimate Show.......2006-11-04
What can I say... 1971, the Fillmore East, the Dead...
One of the greatest show's of the early Dead. Pigpen was on, Jerry had it going, there was an edge in their harmonies. Not slick.. raw powerful
A must for all Deadheads!!!
JHS
The closing of the Fillmore East.......2006-10-13
This for the most part is picked very well. There are some noteworthy moments that didn't make the cd for various legal reasons like The Beach Boys and Duane Allman. This has the only currently released versions of I Second That Emotion and Ain't It Crazy as well as including an electric Dark Hollow and Ripple. This album also draws on alot of Pigpen material which wasn't used on Grateful Dead like Hard To Handle, ect. TC returns for the Dark Star jam on disc three. The jam after Alligator is one for the books. Some people are not as fond of this period as I am, the jams are REAL short as were the shows during this time, I actually perfer the jazzier period of '72-'74 to spring '71, but this is a pretty good collection of the era in question. Get this with Grateful Dead(Skull & Roses) and relive some really cool music from the spring of '71.
The Best Grateful Dead CD ever.......2006-08-25
I have many Grateful Dead CD's and have seen them LIVE many times. This is one of the greatest compilations ever! One of the best songs on this CD is "Hard to Handle". You can really tell that some of the modern groups like the Black Crowes must have listened to some of these songs. Another great part of these old shows is that there was only one drummer.

A Rock And Roll Classic.......2007-04-13
this is what early 80s rock and roll sounded like!
If you lived in 1981 there is no way that you didn't hear of April Wine and this is the album that put them on the map!
The big hits were 'Sign Of The Gypsy Queen' and the beautiful ballad 'Just Between You And Me' but the whole album is very good
the songs and production sound a little bit dated now (especially the cheesy keyboards in 'caught in the crossfire') but you know what, that is what makes this charming! I love listening to this and remembering my childhood.
the vocals are actually quite good, the songwriting is catchy (the songs WILL get stuck in your head, trust me) and the guitar solos are pretty darn good!
some of the lyrics are a little cheesy (like big city girls)
but the whole CD is very worthy of having in your collection
for pure rock and roll this is a perfect example to play for people
the upside - sign of the gypsy queen, just between you and me,crash and burn, and caught in the crossfire
the downside - really can't think of any...for the time period this was just about perfect
the bottom line - especially at this price, you should buy this piece of the early 80s...no collection is complete without April Wine 'The Nature Of The Beast' donutman says so!!!
Ah,man....this is one EVERBODY had in 1981!.......2007-04-01
This is simple. The band absolutely rocked live and wrote great guitar driven songs. Back in the day,if you got lucky while on the hunt for girls and actually talked one into taking a ride with you in your car, this one, and Harder...Faster, would be one of the first asked for to listen to. At the price Amazon has this for, it's a give away.
APRIL WINE NATURE OF THE BEAST CD, NEW........2007-03-18
GREAT PRICE AND FAST SHIP ON THIS NEW CD! A+++! I LOVE AMAZON! MY FAVORITE PLACE TO SHOP! NEVER DISAPPOINTED!
Classic from the 80's.......2006-11-05
The Nature of the Beast is an excellent album. I bought it when it originally came out back in the 80's. The two well-known numbers "Sign of the Gypsy Queen", a great song about "movin on", and the ballad "Just Between You and Me" are of course the gems. But "All Over Town" has a great riff and there's a comical break in the tune where Myles Goodwin has a very sophisticated mimic saying "I don't care." The collection itself has a lot of great guitar riffs and there's just some good rock n roll over all in songs like "Future Tense" and "Wanna Rock". The only bummer is probably "Tellin Me Lies" but it's catchy. April Wine was unforutnately an act that never really got the respect it deserved. If you like straight rock, with a flair of 80's, then this is a good buy.
Sign Of The Gypsy Queen.......2006-09-26
April Wine was a very underrated band and this album falls right into that category. It's true that they really didn't do anything after this one, but this one was great. Very catchy and interesting lyrics all the way through. Classic Rock fans can't go wrong with this one.

If you need to cover something, then do it your own way.EXPRESS YOURSELF.
I dont know why anybody would want to listen to this record when you can have "the real thing".
For you guys who like this record,be prepared to be blown away...
..." FRANCE GALL "... is the name which will keep you addicted for a long time.
Just listen to the original " Laisse Tomber Les Filles " (or infact anything out of her sixties stuff),and then you'll know what I mean.
The choice is yours.
A.M. puts the YEAH in ye-ye.......2004-05-12
A fantastic blend of garage and exotica, Chick Habit is long on pleasure with only a tinge of guilt. this retro-pop record is so flawlessly executed and recorded, you'll think you fell into the way-back machine set for '65.
Remarkable!.......1998-12-19
April March single-handedly reinvents 60's girl group go-go with this album. And she does it in Fray-unch! (Though I understand she's actually from California.)
If you're into, say, Japanese reinterpretation of American pop, this may touch many of the same musical sensibilities.
Made me feel like putting on white boots and a mini and heading out to Pigalle for a night doing the pony. AND I'M A GUY!
I so loved these songs from the first time I heard them, that I taped the entire record off of our local college radio station. (In fact, I don't have the CD! But now I'm thrilled to know I can buy it!
April, wherever you are, WHO ever you are... I LOVE YOU!

Customer Reviews:
A Viable Effort.......2006-01-04
As a McGuinn/Byrds fan and Rick player of many years, I was obligated to buy this CD if only to prevent a hole in my collection. However, it was money well-spent, without doubt. The material is strong, as are most of Roger's performances; and where he gets help, the help comes through.
My one issue with this album is that it is heralded as full of the "jingle-jangle" of the Rickenbacker, and I disagree. First of all, I've always detested the term 'jingle-jangle;' it's just too cute a term for such a magic sound. Second, the album does not jingle OR jangle - the guitar on this is so compressed that it sounds more like a vacuum cleaner drone than Roger's signature sound. In my opinion, I would like to see him rediscover the Turn, Turn, Turn sound. But then, I would also like to see him discover me as his producer. . .
Music better than performer........2005-11-17
As always, Jim (Roger) does a great job on record but continues to be one of the worst guys in the business when it comes to one on one interaction with concert attendees. Surely, he doesn't still think he's the only one still playing and singing old songs to old folks.
musicianship still exists.......2005-09-26
It was nice to hear a pro do his thing, with good musicians, good songs, and a clear feeling he loves the music.
Folk & Rock = A Musical Marriage Made in Heaven.......2005-07-24
George Harrison was and is my favorite Beatle and to hear someone treat his 1965 classic, "If I Needed Someone" with respect, vocally as well as by arrangement was a very pleasant surprise. I honestly did not think that anybody could actually do his own arrangement of this Harrison classic; keep it a recognizable tune and make it nearly as delightful as what the Beatles recorded in late 1965. McGuinn has done an extraordinary job with this collection. He has played the range, including timeless staples such as "When the Saints Go Marching In" and "Shennandoah."
The Byrds' covers of Dylan songs were easy listening, soothing and pleasant and I love the folk arrangement. The Byrds were indeed pioneers and helped influence other excellent groups of that era such as the Turtles, the Lovin' Spoonful and even the Critters, an ersatz Spoonful-esque band from the late 1960s.
McGuinn rocks on "Shady Grove" and "James Alley Blues" will remain a very hard act to follow. That is just a treat for the hearing world.
"Shennandoah" is, as I like to think, written and performed in a very emotive key. Just listening to McGuinn perform this takes listeners through a wide spectrum of emotions. It goes from bright and cheerful and upbeat to melancholy in parts and intense in others. An extraordinary work. I love it!
I had the pleasure of seeing McGuinn and Barry McGuire in concert a few years ago when they did a local show. They are just as effective and just as excellent now as they were decades earlier. McGuinn is an incredible guitarist and I want to hear more guitar work from him. I'd love to hear him and John Sebastian of Lovin' Spoonful fame perform together.
All in all, a solid work. There are many listeners who'll pray for something like this to come along again. Kudos!
Excellent CD!!!!!.......2005-03-23
February 22, 2003 will be a date which I will never forget. In Mt. Dora, Florida, Roger performs a benefit concert, which I attended and had my picture taken with him after the show, and it was this concert where I got to hear some of the material that would end up on this CD for the first time, such as "Interstate 95", as anyone living in Florida can relate to the story Roger tells in this song about being on the road. One listen to the lyrics and you'll understand what I mean. "If I Needed Someone" is an excellent tribute to George Harrison (the original Rickenbacker 12-string king), and I've tried to get an e-mail confirmation from Roger if "Echoes Live" is truly mistitled, as any Byrds fan can tell that it's obviously an acoustic rendition of "Eight Miles High". If you have Roger's CD "Live From Mars", you'll know what I'm talking about. Nonetheless, this CD is very good, especially the hip-hop influence on "Shady Grove". A neat novelty move on Roger's part, to be sure, and if you're a devoted Byrds fan, I recommend this CD. It's a great addition to anyone's CD rack. Roger has often spoke about preserving the folk music, as evidenced by his renditions of such classics like "When The Saints Go Marching In", "St. James Infirmary", "Shenandoah", and "James Alley Blues". If this is to be truly a "Limited Edition" release, then I'm glad to be one of the lucky fans to own this. Excellent work, Roger!!!!!

Count Basie's band endured because of its leader's uncanny ability to put together fresh arrangements and strong soloists while maintaining the band's unique devotion to swing; this CD is among the most enduring of the big band recordings of the 1950s. The title tune is present in a justifiably famous rendition, a performance of swaggering swing and passion that was arranged by organist "Wild Bill" Davis. Frank Foster's "Shiny Stockings," now a jazz standard, made its debut here, while Joe Newman's "Midgets" recasts the band as a bop combo. Throughout the recording are terrific solos by trumpeters Thad Jones and Newman and tenor saxophonists Foster and Frank Wess, all basking in the band's glorious swing. --Stuart Broomer

a milestone.......2007-05-05
"April in Paris", a landmark album worthy of its acclaim, is a benchmark recording in the Count Basie catalog for a number of reasons. The album marks the return of Count Basie to the big band scene, with some new players and tunes that knocked the socks off of audiences everywhere. The elegantly robust opener on this 1956 release for Verve is a forever famous one, a standard that continues being played even today. "Corner Pocket" is almost as celebrated as the previous title track, with sections of musicality that are so sweeping listeners will find themselves pleasantly lost for a few moments.
"Didn't You?" is an impressive number chased by the whole gang, sure to get everyone swinging and tapping them toes. Basie opens things up for us with a saunter on "Sweetie Cakes", with horns and strings in hot pursuit of his lead. Skip ahead to "Shiny Stockings" to invoke that feeling of yesterday, where cats like Basie reigned supreme on stage. This 20-bit digital transfer from the Verve master edition, complete with bonus alternate takes and new liner notes, is a must own for the serious jazz collector.
Personnel:
Count Basie (piano), Joe Newman (trumpet, arrangements), Wendell Culley, Reunald Jones, Thad Jones (trumpets), Henry Coker, Bill Hughes, Benny Powell (trombone), Marshall Royal (clarinet, alto sax), Bill Graham (alto sax), Frank Wess (flute, clarinet, alto sax, tenor sax, arrangements), Frank Foster (tenor sax, clarinet, arrangements), Charlie Fowlkes (baritone sax), Freddie Green (guitar, arrangements), Eddie Jones (bass), Sonny Payne (drums), Jose Mangual and Ubaldo Bieto (percussions).
Original Producer: Norman Granz
Total Time: 68:06
Date: July 1955 and January 1956
20-bit high resolution digital transfer
Good outtakes.......2001-12-18
This is one of the few discs where the outtakes are worthwhile. Usually, the differences are minor, and often I have trouble distinguishing one take from another. But here, they reveal Basie's re-working of some of the cuts at a basic level. The three takes of "Magic", for example, display radically different approaches to the piano intro. Of course, even without the outtakes, this is one of the highpoints of Basie's career anyway.
Pure bliss.......2001-10-23
This is some of the finest Basie in his mid-to-late period.
Very difficult to review........2001-07-04
I had a very tough time trying to decide how to rate this. On the one hand, it's something of a jazz classic, and probably the most famous of Basie's albums. On the other hand, the album is not his best. I've owned this album for a while, and although I have more Basie CDs than anything else, I just don't listen to this one that much.
For one thing, only the title track is really essential. I love "Shiny Stockings," but there is a much better version on "Basie in London." Some other favorites ("Corner Pocket," Sweetie Cakes") sound much better on the live "Corner Pocket" album. If you are a big Basie fan, I suggest you check out a few of the live albums, as Basie is ALWAYS better live. If you're a part-time jazz fan, or want an introduction, this may be for you.
To sum it up, I guess I'd say this. If you don't know Basie, this is a good place to start. If you DO know Basie, and still don't have this CD, you probably would be disappointed. I would rate this closer to 3 stars, but it does have appeal to new fans.
"One More Once!".......2001-06-09
April in Paris is one of those CDs you just never get tired of; like many jazz hallmarks, it invites, insists on repeat play. From the shimmering fountain of brass at the start of the famous "April in Paris" through the last scream of the Neal Hefti's jumping "Dinner with Friends," it's just irresistible fun. Standouts include Basie's trickling notes in the smooth vamp of "Sweetie Cakes;" Thad Jones' and Joe Newman's trumpets on "Corner Pocket" (the former quoting "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White," no less!); the conga-lining, hip-slinging pep of "Mambo Inn," in a dynamic arrangement; the dizzying and hilarious melody of "Midgets;" and Frank Foster's bluesy "Magic," which should have become a standard. This, along with the Atomic Swing CD, is Basie New Testament at its best. Enhancing things is the addition of some wonderful alternate takes, which include a less-than-stellar "Midgets," "April in Paris" with a trumpet in front of the band, and count 'em--TWO different takes of "Magic." The fun thing is that there must have been some dispute over the speed, because of the three versions on this disc, each has a distinctly different tempo, decreasing in speed each time. Also, Basie's opening solos become more intricate with each take. No version is better or worse; in fact, they complement each other. The remastered sound on the disc is excellent; the band sounds full, robust, and lively, and the solos fly straight into your face. Verve hit a homer with this one, and it's definitely worth a listen.

A Great Re-introduction to USA fans........2007-01-19
To most American hard rock fans, "First Glace" was April Wine's first album..and some USA fans still think it is. However the band had been together since the late 60's and some of their earlier Aquarius albums were released in the USA on Big Tree and London records. Despite "You Could Have Been A Lady" getting into the USA Top 40 in 1972, neither record company promoted their albums, even with many tracks that could have been huge AOR or Top 40 hits. (A lot of great Canadian bands like Trooper and Prism never got the promtion and breaks in the USA that they really deserved) Had they been on a record company that cared about them like Mercury did and toured the USA relentlessly, April Wine might have been as successful here in the mid 70's as BTO and Rush were.
Finally in 1978 April Wine hooked up with Capitol, which released "First Glance" here. The American version is a little different... It starts with "Get Ready For Love" instead of "Hot on the wheels of Love", and the cover uses the same band photograph and a simular cover design based on the Aquarius "Greatest Hits" album. Since hardly anyone in the USA knew what the band looked like, this was probably a smart idea. Capitol (after a few bum singles) gave the band a deserved USA Top 40 hit with "Roller" and the album went gold. This breakthrough album lead the way for the success of the "Harder...Faster" LP and especially the platinum selling "Nature of the Beast" LP.
I got a chance to see April Wine at Dallas (now sadly demolished) Bronco Bowl in 2000. The band put on a fine performance that night. Several members of the Dallas Stars hockey team showed up and a couple of members of Pantera were hanging out. A buddy who was there told me Dimebag (RIP) was greatly impressed with the Wine's tight version of "21st Century Schizoid Man".
Classic Canadian Rock.......2006-11-22
Following the release of `Forever, For Now', April Wine fans were wondering in just what direction Myles and the boys would jerk them with the next album. Never fear, the band returned with the rock'n'roll classic `First Glance', their "hardest" album since `Electric Jewels', and had one more surprise - a fifth member. Brian Greenway, an accomplished guitarist, harmonica player, singer, and songwriter in his own right, was thrown into the mix (pardon the pun) about halfway through the making of the album. The addition of Greenway meant a few of things - first, and most importantly, it allowed Myles to play keyboards during live shows while still retaining a thick two-guitar sound (or even better an immensely fat sound when Myles picked up his own Les Paul). Second, it allowed the band to record songs they could actually reproduce on stage. Third, it added another voice for background, and occasionally lead vocals. And to top it off, Greenway even added a few songs of his own on later albums.
Goodwyn's decision that this was going to be a purely rock album is evident from the opening guitar riffs. Curiously, the vinyl version (which I bought the day it was released in 1978) opens with "Hot On The Wheels Of Love" rather than "Get Ready For Love", which opens the CD version I purchased in later years. After years of listening to the vinyl version, I could never get used to starting the CD with "Get Ready...". I always thought that "Hot On..." was a great opening track. The third track is "Rock'n'Roll Is a Vicious Game" which was one of the first two singles from the album (the other being "Let Yourself Go", which didn't go anywhere). The first single was well-received in Canada, but not in the US, and the dismal showing of the second single contibuted greatly to the fact that the album quickly began slipping from the charts. Ironically, the centre-point of the album, which is, of course, "Roller" was never considered for release as a single until an FM in Michigan began playing it. The song's popularity skyrocketed, and "Roller" went on to be the second-biggest single in April Wine's history, remaining in the Billboard Top 30 for 11 weeks. The strength of "Roller" propelled the album to gold status in the US, another first for the band, and the album itself remained in the Billboard album charts for several weeks.
While April Wine has always been great in concert (I know, because I've seen them in every venue from a bar to a stadium), it was the heavier guitar-oriented `First Glance' and the subsequent three records that pushed April Wine into the forefront as one of the truly great arena guitar-rock bands of the late 70's and early 80's.
A snap shot in time............2006-03-25
Brining back memories of a fire bird, warm Busch Beer and Jensen 6X9's. If you can't attribute memories like that to this album then it really isn't that great. Like most music from the late 70's to late 80's: if you didn't grow up during those times the music isn't so great nor meaningful. I love this album along with Nature, Harder Faster and Power Play.
Not so great..........2005-12-21
I think this is a pretty boring album. The music is samey, generic, and dull. By the time this record came out in 1978, April Wine were pumping out hits faster than the assembly line in a factory! They sound like they're just trying to churn out as many hit singles as possible, without giving much thought to the individual songs themselves. Their attempts to write catchy hooks and arena rock choruses sound forced. There aren't any particularly original or interesting songwriting ideas expressed here, the whole thing just seems redundant compared to their other albums. As far as I can see, I'd say that they didn't really have anything to say when they made this......they were just churning out filler to keep the royalties coming in. I really don't recomend this cd to anybody. It represents the "Dark Ages" in April Wine history. Definately not their best......not by a long shot.
Rather mediocre... an ok album but you can do better.......2005-01-12
I mean you can really do better with your money than buy this album. Except for a couple of tracks which you can get on almost any AW compilation there is really nothing here to listen to. The rest of the songs are pretty derivative and extremely similar to the rest of the arena-rock manufactured by megatons at the time of the album's release. "Roller" is an ok rocker but again it's not a real hit from my point of view. There is no song here that leaves me enthralled and begging for more. First two tracks are universally considered the highlights but I wouldn't give them more than a B- in my report card.
