Editorial Reviews
About the Artist
A New York City native with a traditional straight ahead, modal jazz idiom background, saxophonist/composer Quanti Bomani, never one to be quantified, expanded his musical journeys to embrace the diasporic Afro-Caribbean influence. From his early days as a saxophonist with Maurice Miller through the eighties and playing with Ahmad Abdul Malik to performing in the World Caribbean Music Festival with Dominican star Ras Mo and the Mo and Mo Music Project, and playing horn for hip hop/R & B spoken word artiest Goldie the poet, Quanti's musical heritage diversified and exploded in the Quanti Bomani Quintet.

For Quanti, music is the root form of communication. From the beginning, with drums conveying a message of danger or a call to the marketplace, until today, the music's got to carry a message.

His new CD, "View of the World", is heavily influenced by that Afro-Caribbean experience layered with a socio-economic syntax that drives a beat straight from jazz to hip-hop. "After all, the world is diverse", Quanti explains. View of the World is a global sound from an Afro-centric perspective. Music shatters boundaries

Listening to this album is like playing the radio without having to flip the channels from jazz to hip-hop, or rhythm & blues to rock and back.

It's poetic, fluid, beautiful, sad, angry, anguished, insecure, hopeful Sax. View of the World is political... and rhythmically correct.

Customer Reviews:

5 out of 5 stars The City of Prague Philharmonic Orchestra needs a guitar player!.......2006-11-09

Granted, they only need it for one composition (the last one, "The James Bond Theme") but still, without the guitar it's just not the same. Barry didn't compose this one so I suppose it was a bonus and I shouldn't complain, really. The rest of the music on all the CDs is fantastic. Some of the stuff I had heard before without realizing who had composed it. Very enjoyable, to say the least.

5 out of 5 stars Persuaders Theme!.......2006-03-02

Buy it for the Persuaders theme, probably the best TV theme song ever written.

5 out of 5 stars A Variety Of Classics!.......2005-12-06

John Barry has been composing film scores for over forty years and this is only scratching the surface of his productions. Never mind that the entire set is recorded by the Prague Philharmonic; it's pure to Barry's themes. While John Williams compositions ("Star Wars", etc.) are wild and flamboyant and Jerry Goldsmith's (Hoosier's, etc.) are mood pieces, John Barry crosses over all barriers and is amazingly diverse. Barry has recorded most of the exciting James Bond themes, melodramatic classics like "The Lion In Winter' and moody theme hits like "Midnight Cowboy". He also tugs at the heartstrings with compositions from, "Somewhere In Time", "Frances" and "Out Of Africa". He varies his themes for all types of films and few composers capture it so well.

There is over four hours of music in this set with a colorful and informative booklet.

5 out of 5 stars Incredible Barry Collection.......2004-03-11

Any fan of movies will absolutley love this collection. Being a movie buff I couldn't wait to get this boxed set. Knowing Barry from all the James Bond movies, I did not realize his involvement with so many others. The orchestra is magnificent in all these themes. I'm listening to "High Road to China" right now and I'm drifting in the clouds in a Tiger Moth with Tom Selleck and Bess Armstrong. If you are familiar with a movie it will definitely have you seeing it again, if not the scores are still beautiful. Any fan of classical music will be pleased as well. Travellers will defintitely enjoy it for a long drive. I know from when I use to travel that music like this made the miles float by faster. I highly recommend these four CDs even if you just know a handful of the songs.

5 out of 5 stars " one of cinema's greatest composers...John Barry".......2001-07-06

5 out of 5 stars Sir Noel Coward is KING!.......2007-01-09

Very few of us lesser mortals can compete with the genius of Noel Coward, however we certainly can enjoy it! A master of lyric, pun, innendo, and rhyme, Noel will keep all laughing throughout this collection.

5 out of 5 stars Caberet at its Best.......2006-07-11

This is a live recording of a Noel Coward performance in the 1950's at the Desert Inn. The songs are quite a bit racier than his usual studio recordings from the 1920's and 30's; all very witty and very fun. A stand out performance of Cole Porter's "Let's Do It" features references to everyone from Somerset Maugham to Senator Joe McCarthy. Unique.

5 out of 5 stars witty, classic genius.......2005-12-13

My old LP was lost in a recent move! I have loved this album along with "Noel and Gertie" since I first heard it at the age of twelve. Sir Noel Coward is not to be missed.

5 out of 5 stars Best Childrens Folk Group.......2004-05-24

I have heard this and all of Trout Fishings other Albums and My entire Family is nothing short of Entranced. Ezra and Keith are wonderful and their songs are nothing short of hillarious for children and adults alike. Look up their other albums too. Infinity, It's A Puzzle, Family Music Party, Mine!, Big Trouble, Reel Life, Who Are These People, Over The Limit, Truth Is Stranger than Fishin'. ENJOY!

5 out of 5 stars The best.......2002-12-07

I love their music. My sons 7 and 10 have listened for years to their children's music. It is so fun. I even listen to it when the boys are not around. I recommend all of their CDs.

5 out of 5 stars Why don't more people know about these guys?.......1999-12-11

For those of you who have never heard of this duo, you're missing something special. And if you're facing the possibility of going more than a "Wee" bit insane or turning into a "Mommana-maniac" if you hear some of the more well-known kids music one more time, TFIA is for you. Their original songs--some rock, some folk, (an occasional tango) and most just delightfully silly,--have helped us happily survive many long car rides. Buy the CD's- you won't be sorry. And if possible, see them perform live, it's a lot of fun.

5 out of 5 stars Yet another Great Children's Album from TFIA.......1998-11-26

As a 10 year fan of Trout Fishing in America, I can unequivocally say that this is my favorite band of all time. I see them live whenever they come thru Texas. This album is a good childrens album, with lots of songs you can sing along with (even if you don't have kids).

If you are looking for more adult songs, check out "Who Are These People?", "Truth Is Stranger Than Fishing", or "Over the Limit".

    Album Description

This is the world-premiere recording of William Bolcom's tragic opera, unanimously acclaimed as one of the most significant additions to the American opera repertory in recent times. View is based on Miller's powerful play depicting the fall from grace of a longshoreman, Eddie Carbone, whose barely repressed desire for his now-grown niece, Catherine, leads to the betrayal of his community and disastrous personal consequences. Bolcom's beautifully crafted and richly varied score embellishes but never overwhelms Miller's dark drama.

Bolcom is an important composer in his prime, who writes confidently in an eclectic style that is musically sophisticated but always accessible. The material has been craftily adapted by the composer's longtime collaborator, Arnold Weinstein, who retains the drama's taut structure while still allowing ample opportunity for lyrical expansion. The Lyric Opera's production could not be more effectively mounted or splendidly cast. Dennis Russell Davies encourages the orchestra to savor the score's purely musical beauties without compromising the drama's swift pacing. Working as a honed ensemble, the cast never strikes a false note.

    Customer Reviews:

4 out of 5 stars View from the Bridge.......2007-01-17

Good singing nice orchestral playing. Great CD to Learn about this opera from.

    5 out of 5 stars A great modern opera.......2004-06-02

I would like to put in a few good words for this opera, which has received some negative and lukewarm reviews on here on Amazon.com. This is a tense psychological drama set to brilliantly crafted music. Bolcom's music is a cornucopia of American styles and also takes into account the Italian operatic tradition. It is edgy and modern, but very accessible. Some might complain that the opera is more like continuous arioso than lyrical writing. So are most of the operas of Wagner, and I'm sure, many 20th-century operas! As a matter of fact, there is a great deal of lyricism in BRIDGE, and there are instances when the endless melody (or endless recitative, depending on your view) flowers into a genuine aria - such as in Rodolpho's show-stopper, "I love the beauty of the view at home" (also known as "New York Lights"). As for the performers, suffice to say that they are all superb, but that baritone Kim Josephson stands out in the role of the tormented Eddie Carbone. His voice-type is perfect for the role, and he sings with expressive warmth, beauty of tone, and dramatic power. I would urge any opera lover to check BRIDGE out. It is a valuable contribution to the operatic repertoire.

1 out of 5 stars Maybe the view was better from somewhere else........2003-05-07

I'm sure this is a fine CD. It's the opera that is a real disappointment to me, and I just don't want to spend any more time with it.

I've loved the play for years. When I heard that an opera was being created, it seemed like a perfect idea. But I sure don't like the result.

I've heard the opera twice: broadcast from Lyric Opera and broadcast from the Met. The libretto is fine. It's the music that's a problem for me. Nothing flows smoothly. Nothing soars. The phrasing is so painfully artificial that I get the feeling that Bolcom was composing for a different language, which has been awkwardly translated into English.

Reading the praises heaped on Bolcom and his score I wonder what people are hearing that I miss. I wonder what interests the artists involved enough to spend time with this project. I wonder why, after comissioning the project, anybody bothered to produce it.

Bring back THE VOYAGE. Bring back THE GHOSTS OF VERSAILLES. Stage L'MORE DEI TRE RE. But let this BRIDGE collapse, sink, and be forgotten.

    3 out of 5 stars A solid modern opera.......2002-10-04

Generally hailed as one of the best recent American operas, Bolcolm's take on Arthur Miller's play has all the ingredients of a traditional opera -- tragically flawed characters, soaring melodies, even a revenge aria -- and yet strikes a thoroughly modern chord, its dynamic score underlining themes of family dysfunction and incest. Drawing from a eclectic palette that serves to support the characters rather than bury them, Bolcolm's music moves deftly through an emotional and stylistic landscape, from jazz to lyricism to dissonance. Although the beginning of the opera is a bit talky, the arrival of Rodolpho brings a wonderful Italian tenor into the mix, his spirited voice soaring above the Brooklyn dockworkers and pulling the opera along to its tragic conclusion.

2 out of 5 stars Powerful Theatrically, but not Operatically.......2002-07-15

I suspect that this opera works better in the theater than on disc. The Arthur Miller play works like Greek tragedy, even in it's original version. The problem is that the Bolcom music just doesn't seem to add all that much to the procedings. There is little that is memorable in the musical moments. Much of the vocal writing resembles extended arioso rather than true melodic writing. This is certainly a popular way for modern opera to be written, but in the hands of all but the greatest masters (Debussy, Berg, Janacek, Britten) it never really works as opera. A play is better as a play. Unless the music really elucidates something that can't be found in the words, it renders itself superfluous.

No fault can be found with the performances. They are definitive. This is probably an opera that composers and fans of modern opera should hear at least once. Bolcom is an important composer and derserves exposure. But most will probably not find themselves drawn to a re-hearing.

5 out of 5 stars Among the most underrated ska titles.......2005-05-12

SHJ was an icon of the northeast ska scene when I was growing up. Let me state that I myself was never really much of a skankin' roughie myself, but my sister and many of my friends were deeply involved in the scene themselves and I have yet to meet a single individual who can credibly speak of the regional ska scene without mentioning SHJ.

This album was regarded as the "pre-sellout" SHJ album, before they added "USA" to their name. Jolene is a decent song, but that release pales in comparison to the diversity of Static World View. Simply put, if you are a ska fan and do not own this album, you are missing out. The songs are not a homogenous mix of boring standard pop structure. The instrumentation is varied and nuanced. The horn lines are catchy as hell. The guitar comes out of the rhythmic background when it needs to. The vocals and harmonies are unquestionably competent.

Addicted, Electric, and Freedom typify this cds diversity pretty damned well. There is no formula other than the collective attempt of a band to create the awesome. The songs swing in an amusing way and rarely comprimise themselves to deliver something you've heard before. I consider this to be my favorite ska cd of all time and among my favorite pop cds. If you consider yourself a fan of the genre, you should be ashamed for not having given this one a chance.

5 out of 5 stars Formerly speechless, but now able to express my appreciation.......2004-01-31

This is perhaps the most incredible ska(core?) album ever produced. The song "Electric" shall forever remain my all time favorite. Concerning one of the previous reviews from 1999 where an ignorant fan said the same thing 16 times in a row, I would sharply disagree and have to say that this CD does NOT in fact need "Jolene." I found Songs From Suburbia to be a startling disappointment, followed by the band splitting up. Static World View is fantastic from start to finish, both musically and lyrically. I still find myself to be in a state of disbelief every time I hear it. It's just amazing, I bought it twice over the span of a few years, nothing else to say.

5 out of 5 stars My Favorite CD of all time.......2002-01-21

This is by far my favorite album of all time. I bought it in 1996 and I still have it in my cd player almost every day. I am glad to see that the members of the band are having success with other groups, but nothing will ever compare to good times in CT with SHJ. If you can't buy it anywhere, download it. And spread the word.

5 out of 5 stars The style is the man--and the song.......2001-05-02

Many composers have chosen to perform their own material and commit it to discs, with mixed results. Only with Noel Coward do we feel that a good deal of the charm of his numbers lies in the very way he performs them. For proof, we now have the Naxos Nostalgia (8.120529), which dishes up 16 tracks of the ultra-refined son of W. S.Gilbert, giving us six selections from "This Year of Grace," one from "Bittersweet," a medley of treasures from his "Cavalcade," another from his other works, and a few other trifles that are better than most of what is written today.

Add to all this two classical scenes with Coward and co-star Gertrude Lawrence from his "Private Lives," incredibly valuable for those local drama groups who butcher this work in that this CD can teach them the tone and rhythms that are essential in making this classic succeed.

The subtitle of this set is "The Complete Recordings, Volume 1: 1928-1932." So we can look forward to future offerings featuring this fascinating composer-lyricist-performer. Thank you, Naxos, yet again.

    3 out of 5 stars Somewhat disappointing.......2005-09-25

There are some unique and interesting songs of this album. Unfortunately the performance does not shine. I found the singing and accompaniment a bit slow and monotonous and uninspired. Furthermore, it was difficult to understand the words at times (indistinct enunciation). There are a few exceptions: tracks 3, 4, 9, 20, 21 I gave 3 stars in iTunes; all the rest got two stars or less. If you want beautiful, traditional choral music, I recommend any of the albums featuring the Cambridge Singers over this collection.

5 out of 5 stars a voice teacher and early music fan.......2006-03-25

I have always admired the nonchalant and somewhat dry humor of Noel Coward lyrics, not to mention the interesting twists and turns that his music often takes, I admire Ian Bostridge for attempting his songs and doing a "bang-up" job of it! A quote from Ian Bostridge prior to making this recording:"My first concern while contemplating a disc of Noel Corward songs was finding a voice for them,,,,,,We need to remember that, in Coward, we have not only a formidable playwright and screenwriter, but also the English equivalent of Irving Berlin or Cole Porter". After I heard this from Bostridge (on an interview on ABC) I began to appreciate the songs much more than previously. There is much philosophising going on as in "I Travel Alone" and some are quite humorous as in "Mad Dogs and Englishmen". One has to listen more than once to get it all, but it's worth the time. And I definately think that Ian found the voice to sing them.Do I prefer Bostridge singing classical??Of course!!!!!But I still enjoy a break now and then and I'll take this disc for that reason.

4 out of 5 stars Mad dogs and an Englishman called Ian .......2005-09-02

I must say that I approached this album as a fan of Ian rather than Noel Coward (and admittedly still don't really have a good idea of who the man is). So in terms of Ian's singing, I like it a lot. He has a wonderfully dextrous voice and a clear tone, complemented by Jeffrey Tate on the piano and the soprano Sophie Daneman for several numbers.

Generally I find myself unable to appreciate the work of classical singers who do crossover albums, but Ian is an exception. It has been said elsewhere that he may lack a robustness in his voice, but here in fact, one would not wish for an overpowering tenor. He isn't at all overblown, unlike many other singers in crossovers. The lightness of his voice lends a kind of intimacy to these recordings, as if he were singing in a café or an at-home musical evening.

The material is, of course, a departure from Schubert, &c., but he handles it well. However, I do think that he has a better emotional feel for the 19th century German romanticists and the 20th century British classical composers (i.e. Britten). This recording is pleasant but it seems to me to lack the emotional depth of Ian's Schumann in particular - a perceived deficiency that might lie with the composer Coward rather than the performer.

I like to listen to this CD when I want to listen to Ian sing, but am not in the mood for his more serious/depressing recordings (a la Schubert & Britten). The lyrics are pretty inane, the same goes for the songs themselves - melodically speaking - but Ian makes them special. So four stars.

5 out of 5 stars Coward the Composer, Quite Charming without the Camp.......2002-11-18

I love this CD. I have a collection of Noel Coward performing his major songs, and I found it entertaining, but frankly I was never much drawn to it after the initial novelty wore off. I never really appreciated Coward as a composer because his campy persona and limited vocal talents got in the way. I bought this CD as a gift for a big Coward fan, and I am ashamed that I have not yet given it to him because I enjoy it so much. Bostridge is a really fine tenor. The beauty and subtlety of his voice bring out the beauty of Coward's melodies and the wit of his lyrics without overwhelming them with a heavy and mannered "classical" style, which is the bane of most such "crossover" CDs. The CD is also beautifully recorded. Outstanding songs include "I Travel Alone," "Parisian Pierrot," "World Weary," and "A Room with a View." Bostridge also has just the right touch with the goofier songs like "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," "Something to do with Spring," and "Any Little Fish." I highly recommend this CD to anyone who enjoys witty cabaret songs in general and Coward in particular. It really did give me a new and greater appreciation of Coward's considerable talents as a composer.

    2 out of 5 stars COWARD'S THEATRE SONGS.......2002-09-30

Sometimes musical artists should NOT attempt cross-over albums. I am a huge fan of Jessye Norman, Leontyne Price and Joan Sutherland, but their ventures into "popular" music were, at best, misguided and, at worst, heavy-handed and pretentious. Although Ian Bostridge does not embarrass himself, there is no question that he should stick to more "serious" music and leave musical comedy to other singers.

The theatre songs of Noel Coward take a very different kind of approach than Bostridge gives them. They need an actor who happens to be singing. Except for a very few of the songs on this CD (written by Coward for operettas instead of musical comedies) Bostridge's approach is absolutely without any character. All of these numbers are impeccably sung by Bostridge, but none of them are ever really acted. Coward's songs MUST be acted whether they were written in a comic or sentimental vein. The result is another misfired cross-over album in what otherwise is a splendid career.

    Album Description

Considered by many to be one of the most unique guitar virtuosos in the world, Prasanna takes a quantum leap into the future with `Be the Change'. Stellar performances from an all star line-up of some of the worlds' best musicians like multi-Grammy winning Bela Fleck and the Flecktones bassist Victor Wooten, ex-Weather Report bass legend Alphonso Johnson, the dynamic Flecktones saxophonist Jeff Coffin, ex-Frank Zappa drummer Ralph Humphrey, one of LA's hottest saxophonists Andy Suzuki, the explosive drummer Derico Watson and the versatile vocalist Shalini, complement Prasanna's dynamic guitars, vocals and strikingly original compositions of rare depth. `Pangaea Rising' musically mirrors the result of cataclysmic changes in the Earth's geological past, `Bliss Factor' is a song in Sanskrit with the text from the advaita Hindu philosophy of ancient India wafting through some high voltage Jazz/ Funk, `Ragabop' showcases the journey of the chromatically adventurous Carnatic raga `Kapi' in a be-bop laden jazz acoustic guitar trio format with jaw-dropping virtuosity, Dharma becomes Alibama' brings in the bitter-sweet dissonance of carnatic ragas Dharmavathi and Saramathi rising over some exquisite straight ahead Jazz, `The Grapevine' is a now Jazz-now progressive rock camouflage, `Satyam', the bi-lingual English/Sanskrit song blends R and B, Funk, Carnatic, Disco and African elements with soaring vocals, a powerful message and infectious groove, `Kalyani Connection' unleashes the power of the inexhaustible carnatic raga `Kalyani' clothed in an instrumental Rock Power ballad, at times even sonically bordering on New Age, the blazing `Ta ka ta ki ta Blues' is a pounding blend of hard rock, blues and jazz against an unmistakable rhythmic tala structure of carnatic music, `Uncensored' is proud old-school Jazz/Rock peppered with an incendiary new twist of Clave-meets Carnatic Tala vocalization.

`Be the Change' is a mind, body and soul experience.

5 out of 5 stars Keeps Music going in the right direction.......2006-04-14

A very intriguing album that grows on you each time you listen to it. It's one of those rare gems in this day where sound effects and other superficialities take the back seat and most emphasis is on enunciation of music itself. It is a great leap forward in the sense that Carnatic music has found itself well seated in a Jazzy couch, unlike shakti (more so carnatic in Carnatic/ Hindustani) and Remember Shakti (a bit more Jazz in Carnatic/ Hindustani). Another observation is that quite a few tracks are is largely deep rooted in Indian philoslophy and music, which is what probably what gives that strong sense of awe and places the album in the stack that would be cherished for a good long time to come.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!.......2005-12-29

Prasanna is a very gifted musician/composer. No matter which mood I am in, his music lifts me to the top of the world. I have attended a live concert of Prasanna, which I found extremely satisfying.

This album is a must for anyone who likes Jazz/fusion or even Indian classical. My personal favourite from this album is "The Grapevine"

btw, Prasanna is the first to play classical Indian music on an electric guitar...

5 out of 5 stars Best CD I've owned !.......2005-08-19

Be the Change's got a piece for everyone...a timeless blend of jazz, carnatic, funk, rock, complex time signatures sounding good at the same time, everything. It's best not to make comparison to any other musician or genre and not fair to brand this 'fusion' as you would other carnatic-western attempts... say L.Subramanium or even Shakti cos they are carnatic played alongside western, not really 'fused', prasanna mood-swings from jazz to carnatic and back when the moment deserves and far as a know only musician capable of doing so. The sound's mixed well too and nothin better than hearing the best on guitars, sax and drums.

5 out of 5 stars STEELY DAN VISITS BANGALORE.......2005-05-24

Outstanding fusion album - Prasanna is a worthy successor to Mahavisnu.

    5 out of 5 stars Amazing!!.......2004-07-20

Prasanna is an amazing musician. Equally well versed in many genres from Carnatic to Blues to Rock and Jazz. Be The Change is a gem of an album that fuses many of his varied musical tastes very well. Accompanied by some of the best musicians in Jazz, Prasanna is at his creative best melding the intricate ragas with the high energy of Rock and the subtle chord changes of Jazz along with the accessibility of Pop. This is a highly listenable album of very high quality cerebral musicianship. Kalyani Connection is dedicated to Shawn Lane, another giant of a guitar player and musician who successfully fused Carnatic music with Jazz and Rock. Check out his albums with Jonas Hellborg and the Vinayakram Brothers (Icon and Good People In Times Of Evil) and an extraordinary DVD of their live performance at Cafe New Morning in Paris (Called Paris, available at abstractlogix.com) that must be seen to be believed!!
